19.01.2022 One of the more common foot complaints is pain underneath the foot, either in the middle of the arch itself, or where the arch meets the heel bone. The primary piece of tissue that runs through the undersurface of the foot is called the plantar fascia. Inflammation of this structure is called plantar fasciitis - and if it persists for long enough, a little heel spur (bony growth off the heel bone) may form. Learn more about fixing your Plantar Fasciitis today http://bit.ly/plantar_new. Call to book in with one of our Physiotherapists 07 5575 3244 or book online https://www.backinmotion.com.au/mermaid-beach
19.01.2022 Pelvic floor and incontinence Pelvic floor is a group of muscles that extend from the tailbone to the pubic bone at the front like a sling. When it does not function properly, this is called pelvic floor dysfunction. It is a group of muscles that we cannot visualise, therefore we neglect to train it. It is a group of muscles that help maintain the height of the pelvic organs ( the bladder, rectum and uterus), and controls our continence ( urination and defecation).... Pelvic floor conditions can include: stress incontinence, urge incontinence, urgency, vaginal & rectal prolapse, constipation, fecal incontinence. Some reasons that the pelvic floor weaken can include: being overweight, constant straining from constipation, extra pressure from pregnancy, chronic coughing, continuous heavy lifting. There are many benefits of doing pelvic floor exercises: 1. For pregnant women it is vital for the pelvic floor to be strong to cope with the increasing weight of the baby 2. For older adults, strengthening the pelvic floor may aid continence control affected by menopause 3. For adults who lose their urine control when sneezing or jumping or laughing, may benefit from these exercises Please contact Lily, our physiotherapist on 07 5575 3244 to seek help with discussing your condition, assessment and advice on specific treatment. Good results require determining the cause of your condition, and time for proper rehabilitation.

15.01.2022 Weight training and falls prevention As we get older, we tend to reduce the amount of physical activities we used to do when we were younger. Whether this is because of interest, or because we have more aches and pains. This results in declining body mass, stiffness in our joints and reduced balance. The saying goes, if we dont use it, we lose it. This may mean, that we are less able to catch ourselves when we are off balance. Therefore, it is important to maintain our fi...tness, especially as we are getting older. Strength and balance go hand in hand. These are simple checks that we can do to determine if I need to exercise more. 1. Can I easily go from sitting to standing? 2. Am I able to sit on the ground and then stand up off the ground ? Many people enjoy exercising through walking, gentle movements such as stretching. However, it is also important to address our strength as well. Our physiotherapists can determine the most beneficial exercises to do to maintain strength and not aggravate your pain at the same time. Our quality of life improves when we are strong enough to do things with ease. At Back in Motion Mermaid Beach, we offer falls prevention classes. Please book in with our physiotherapist to learn the exercises most beneficial for you to join the class .

09.01.2022 If your chair isnt providing the right back support, it can be difficult to maintain good posture throughout the day. The longer we sit, the harder it is for our back muscles to support the natural curve of our spine. As our body tires, we tend to compensate by leaning forward and slouching, which can cause unnecessary strain and discomfort. Using a lumbar roll helps to support your lower back and reinforce good posture. ... We have plenty in stock, and were more than happy to give advice on fitting one to your chair. Ask your physio about our lumbar rolls on your next visit! Or pop in to buy one on your way by 07 5575 3244 https://www.backinmotion.com.au/mermaid-beach

01.01.2022 Gyms are finally OPEN!! But with that, comes an increased risk of injury. When a return to exercise commences, the bodies ability to protect itself against injury is reduced. Range of motion is often decreased and the synovial fluid inside the joint responsible for the health and protection of the joint is also decreased. Combine that with a decrease in cardiovascular fitness and strength and we have a delicious Injury cocktail, ready and waiting. ... For modified starting weights/distances and progressions that will ensure you minimise your injury risk when returning to exercise, see below. . . Resistance training: If you trained at home throughout COVID-19: - Commence training with a 20% reduction in weight compared to your pre-lockdown numbers. No training throughout COVID-19: - A 40% reduction in weight compared to pre-lockdown numbers. Then presume to progress at a rate of 10% per week in weight for the first month. Circuit training (HIIT): Modified week 1 25% less reps per station / set: - 12 reps become 8 - 45s becomes 35s Modified week 2 10% less reps per station / set: - 12 reps become 10 - 45s becomes 40s Running: Commence runs with a 50% reduction distance or total km/week compared to your pre-lockdown numbers. Then presume to progress at a rate of 10% per week for the first month.
