25.01.2022 Here are some mobility exercises which can decrease risk of injury and pains for kayaking. Spinal mobility and rotation together with hip and shoulder mobility allow for an easy and full stroke with a paddle . . Open books: This exercise helps encourage rotation through our upper back which is vital for paddling .... . Shoulder and upper back wall stretch this encourages good shoulder mobility whilst maintaining good spinal posture. Ensure back is flat against the wall and don’t need to lift pelvis off the wall. If you are finding this difficult ease the ankle of the shoulders but ensure core is on and back is in contact with wall . . Wall rotation stretch: Begin kneeling with leg closest to the wall out in front with hips and knees at 90 degrees rotate trunk towards wall with hands pressed against wall slowly spread arms out until straight and press chest towards wall (Play with distance from wall and pressure applied to increase difficulty or regress stretch) - This stretch helps with hip IR, thoracic rotation, shoulder external rotation, hip and core stability, hip and Tx dissociation See more

This will allow for comfort whilst riding and decrease risk of strain and injury. Best evidence favours 25-35 degrees knee bend (Peveler W 2012), however variations depend on conditioning, experience, and flexibility. ***TIP: Whist sitting, place heel of foot on the pedal straighten leg to bottom of pedal stroke slightly bend knee. *** . . 04.01.2022 Have you suffered from a rib sprain? . . The rib articulates with our spine by two joints and connects to the front of the chest at the sternum. Like an ankle sprain this joint can be sprained can cause pain. Due to the vast nervous supply in the area this can range from a mild to severe pain which usually slightly on one side of the spine. It can be a sharp or stabbing pain which can be worsened with deep breathing or movement of the spine specially in rotation and extensi...on. . . The cause of this pain can be due to sport, poor sleeping posture, coughing/sneezing, twisting movements, heavy lifting and can be predisposed by decreased mobility through the spine, poor breathing biomechanics and poor posture. . . Treatment of rib pain initially can include rest, ice for 48 hours from initial injury and over the counter anti-inflammatories if suitable. Osteopathic treatment is aimed at improving structure and alignment, function and movement, blood supply, nerve function, lymphatic drainage and decreasing any local muscle spasm. This in turn should help your body get on the right path to healing itself and provide some temporary relief from your symptoms in the meantime. . . Typical rib sprains are usually really painful for a few days to a week. Sometimes the pain will get worse on the second or third day. Symptoms usually slowly reduce as your body heals but they can niggle or be annoying for a week or so. Your body should heal itself in time, however sometimes osteopathic treatment can help reduce some of the symptoms associated with these injuries, and help your body function as well as it can, so it can do it’s best to heal and prevent re-injury.
