25.01.2022 I am glad to say I have now completed my Graduate Certificate in Continence and Women's Health at Curtin University. To celebrate finishing this semester, we went for a hike today in Heathcote National Park! Fresh air and nature always helps to replenish me. What do you find helps to refresh your reserves?

25.01.2022 Welcome to LBP #MythBusting day two! Its a common belief that getting older will either cause back pain, or make any existing pain worse. #BUSTED! Research doe...s not support this, and in fact, interventions based on evidence can help at any age. For more information, you can find the research here: https://bjsm.bmj.com//early/2019/12/31/bjsports-2019-101611 #choosephysio #mythbusting #exerciseismedicine

19.01.2022 One of my favourite events of the year, the Huskisson sprint triathlon. I love running and swimming but the swim was tough due to choppy water and currents. What do you love to do for exercise? If you arent back to where you want to be due to pain, book in with Edwina or Tania to help you return to your exercise goals.

19.01.2022 I got to meet Professor Kari Bo today at the AGES PF symposium! It was fantastic hearing her speak in person about the evidence for pelvic floor muscle training as well as the importance of physical activity, two topics that are close to my heart.

18.01.2022 "There is no evidence that lifting with a flexed or round back increases your risk of back pain. That does not mean one posture is safer than another. It just means there is not enough evidence to say lifting with a straight back is best." Professor Peter OSullivan, Curtin University. If you have problems with lifting or bending, please see Tania or Edwina as we are both APA Musculoskeletal Physiotherapists who specialise in treating back pain and we can give you individualised advice to help you. See link for further info. https://www.smh.com.au//put-your-back-into-it-no-evidence-

16.01.2022 #Mythbusting round two! Low Back Pain (LBP) is the number one cause of disability worldwide, often associated with expensive, sometimes ineffective or even harm...ful care. But why does this persist? According to new research from Peter OSullivan, JP Caneiro, Kieran OSullivan, Ivan Lin, Samantha Bunzli, Kevin Wernli and Mary OKeeffe, unhelpful beliefs and pervasive myths though they are common and culturally endorsed are not backed by evidence and are associated with greater levels of reported pain, disability, work absenteeism, medication use and healthcare seeking. To begin to peel back some of the unhelpful beliefs outlined in the research, were launching another myth-busting exercise, this time focussed on LBP. Today, were busting the notion that scans will always show the cause of back pain. In fact, scans are only helpful for a small minority of people. While a lot of conditions can be reported with a scan bulging discs, protrusions, degeneration, arthritis and so on what cant be seen is the reality that many of these conditions are also common in those without any pain at all. As such, they cant predict your pain! For more information, you can find the research here: https://bjsm.bmj.com//early/2019/12/31/bjsports-2019-101611

15.01.2022 Sleep and pain are intricately linked. We know that poor sleep increases pain sensitivity and people in chronic pain often find it hard to get a good nights sleep. This article talks about the general effects of sleep on health and the need to address our sleep habits. https://www.smh.com.au//the-generational-divide-in-how-we-

14.01.2022 This article resonated with me because I love exercise and running and Im also a Mum so I understand the barriers. Contact me, Edwina Chan, Womens Health Physiotherapist for a postpartum check to help you successfully return to exercise after having a baby. https://www.abc.net.au//new-mothers-empowerment-e/11559982

14.01.2022 We know that breathing exercises can help to calm the nervous system and relieve stress. This is a simple box-breathing meditation you may like to try. If you find this helpful, there is also a good ABC podcast called "Mindfully" co-produced by Smiling Mind which has short guided meditations to listen to. https://www.abc.net.au/radio/programs/mindfully/

08.01.2022 For the fourth day of LBP #MythBusting, lets review the common idea that back pain is brought on by a weak core. #BUSTED! In fact, people experiencing back p...ain often tense their core muscles as a protective response (a bit like clenching your fist when you sprain your wrist). While its important to keep your muscles strong, being tense all the time is not helpful. For more information, you can find the research here: https://bjsm.bmj.com//early/2019/12/31/bjsports-2019-101611 #choosephysio #mythbusting #exerciseismedicine

07.01.2022 I went back to Perth this week for my next subject for my Continence and Womens Health Masters at Curtin Uni. The photo is with my lovely fellow WH physio friend Marika Hart :-) We went to Sculpture by the Sea at Cottesloe and found this sculpture of the pelvis which was quite apt!

06.01.2022 Its day three of our LBP #MythBusting venture, and today, were tackling the myth that everyday loading and bending leads to backs wearing out. #BUSTED! In f...act, the same way that lifting weights makes muscles stronger, moving and loading can make the back stronger and healthier. Just make sure you start gradually and practice regularly. For more information, you can find the research here: https://bjsm.bmj.com//early/2019/12/31/bjsports-2019-101611 #choosephysio #mythbusting #exerciseismedicine

04.01.2022 Patients often mention to me they think they have "bad posture" or they need to correct their posture to help their pain. There is no single ideal posture. Here is a summary of the evidence on what we know about posture. Thank you to Kevin Wernli for the infographic.
