25.01.2022 Such an abundant spring! Bagala (Leopard Wood) in flower

23.01.2022 From the ground up the first stage of the build continues through the heat of February and March. No easy task however Justin and son, Luke, did an awesome job. So grateful to have the White/King team on site - always smiling, polite, tolerant and efficient

22.01.2022 First family visit in review

22.01.2022 Stage two of the Bagala Cottage build is yet to start however I had a request for the six week rental of my home, while I was going to be away for the birth of a grand baby. Too good!! With a long list of "stuff that needed to be done" in and around my home this seemed a great opportunity to get it all achieved.....in three weeks!! I admit to moments of total overwhelm however the universe provides if you ask and I have had some awesome interaction with people and businesses ...which I wish to acknowledge: Hard Hat and Hammer who are my hero's! Justin's mate Danny, and Cameron Jordon, both of whom have an amazing life energy and enthusiasm for work! Lou Chesworth, who is an angel in disguise, and Dave who has kept me sane... and taken away the rubbish. Pete, Caz, Chuck and George who took all discarded household goods, furniture and building materials and made sure they went to their chosen charities. Lightning Ridge Electrical and Mark Fernando, Harvey Norman Moree, Dubbo Lighting Centre, Moree Aluminium & Glass, Eco Down Under and Joseph from Kranz - all deliver their services with friendly efficiency. My emotional and physical energy has been high through this time with absolute thanks to Sandra Kuehn, and my daughter Rebel, who continue to open my eyes to universal possibilities!

15.01.2022 This wee cottage has been demolished and I thought you might like to join me on the journey to rebuilding the dream! As with many renovations it started with a request to the builder to re roof what was the original "camp" on my rural retreat "Bagala" in Lightning Ridge. I enjoy sharing the adventure that is my life in Lightning Ridge and my ambition is to have a super comfortable place for family and friends to stay...... and to earn some retirement income during the tourist season.

15.01.2022 With stage one of the new "Bagala Cottage" very close to completion I thought you might enjoy meeting the awesome build team. Top of the tree Justin White, the builder, cabinet maker, tiler, flooring layer and master of all Danielle King, partner in life, project manager, truck driver, kid and dog wrangler and she who must be obeyed... Sons, Luke and Shaun, who have been a great assistants and lightened my days with their warm smiles and courtesy Jackson, the painter, and Mark, the electrician, both efficient, professional and very likeable blokes Dealing with COVID19 restrictions, and our normal isolation issues, throughout this build has been an extra challenge, for all, however there has only been respect and friendly, professional courtesy. I will miss all these friendly faces, and the music, until they return for Stage Two..... but first a celebration, under the western night sky, for a fireside BBQ!

12.01.2022 Despite years of running repairs, paint and quirky "touches" the sad fact remained that the renovation of my rustic cottage was going to be expensive and time consuming. The roof was very low and leaked badly (when it rained), the cottage had been roughly botched together and had past white ant damage...... so this happened! The "Hard Hat and Hammer" team got to work! Memories come to mind.... so many funny/happy times as family and friends "camped" under that roof.... Son Cameron and his mate Brizza, an urban man on his first "bush" visit, regaling us with their night time adventure of waking to two mice playing soccer with the mouse bait! The painter Andy, who hated the gorgeous red earth paint I had chosen, begged me not to use it. I arrived home from work one afternoon to be greeted by a grinning Andy stating the job complete and how he loved the colour! Surprised I asked him why he had changed his mind...his answer? "Because I don't want to paint the f....ing place again! And then the toilet frogs!! Enough now it is time to start the next chapter......

09.01.2022 The name "Bagala" brings to mind a wise indigenous Elder Auntie of this area. Sitting by an outdoor fire one magic evening in 2006 I was telling this lady of all the Leopard Wood growing around my new home. Auntie told me I would call my home "Bagala" as that was the tree's proper name. Given that the name I had inherited was "Poverty Point", in obvious reference to its non opal bearing soil, I was both enchanted and very happy to comply! Auntie also told me of the medicinal... and building properties of this beautiful tree and of the way it protected itself until it was well established. If you google Leopard Wood tree you will find its name is "Flindersia maculosa" and it is a member of the citrus family. For several years it grows as a spiny, intricate shrub before an erect trunk emerges. It is noted that the amber gum can be eaten as a remedy for diarrhoea and its very tough yellow wood can be used for roof shingles, pick handles and shafts for drays or buggies. With the bark on it can be used for fence posts however it is stated that it is useless as a building material as a coleopterous insect destroys it. Sadly no reference to its Indigenous name or their ancient survival knowledge of this trees qualities. I love my Bagala trees and most of all when moonlight reflects off their beautiful, patterned bark.

07.01.2022 A bobcat, a skip bin and two strong men and we have the site levelled for stage two of the Bagala Cottage build! The mess of poly pipe discovered underneath the old build apparently feeds water to three neighbouring camps - as they quickly alerted us when the pipes were disconnected! 15 years of ownership and who knew? Certainly not me!

04.01.2022 Caught them yarningIt’s been all hands on deck with final touches being made to the outdoor area it’s all looking grand! Tomorrow my job starts....the cleaning and moving in

03.01.2022 As the temperature starts to soar it is getting to the pointy end of the new cottage buildThe promise is it will be ready for family at Christmas, friends during the summer and scheduled for holiday rental 2021 tourist season...... can’t wait to show you inside!

02.01.2022 Enjoy sharing my space A beautiful bush retreat sitting quietly just out of the hustle and bustle of town but never too far make your way on foot. A true Lightning Ridge experience amongst the native wildlife. Both front and back patios were little bush oasis', whilst indoors is relaxed but well equipped, clean and spacious. We’ve stayed at most places in Lightning Ridge and this is a firm favourite. The owner Leigh is very warm and professional. We would be delighted to r...eturn to Bagala Cottage again.
