11.01.2022 Injured humpback calf. With whale presence in the Two Bays region greatly reduced, we have moved some of our focus to the east of the State for the southbound l...eg of the humpback migration. This is mostly focussed on the collection of fluke identification imagery with some focus on numbers of whales passing through. Recently, citizen scientist Barb Wallace photographed a humpback calf carrying a significant injury. The image was taken whilst onboard a Wilsons Promontory whale watch with Wildlife Coast Cruises. This image was shared with us and later matched to an image taken by our friends at Cat Balou Cruises, Eden, NSW 5 days earlier. The injury looks to possibly be associated with an entanglement event and is not considered life threatening. These images again highlight the value of citizen science, collaboration and good communication. We have notified our collaborators in eastern Tasmania of this animal in the hope that it may be photographed again, giving us an insight into the recovery potential of these animals from such injuries. #whalesvictoria #citizenscience See more

07.01.2022 HERE TO HELP: when it comes to #isolation, our expeditioners at Davis station have got a few tips for you. While for us back here in #Australia, working remotel...y for a few weeks could stretch into months, our wintering #expeditioners are already in for the long haul. Our small teams in #Antarctica just 24 people at Davis right now are experts at living in isolation. They have to be! As the sea ice grows and #winter dark lengthens, they’re settled in (and #COVID19 free) for the rest of the year. Read more at www.antarctica.gov.au//top-tips-isolate-like-an-antarctican

However, Peter from Bombala sent us some wonderful images of a local platypus that he has spotted during the last three weeks. They definitely are unique creatures!
