16.01.2022 Tips on catching snapper in the Brisbane River Most people associate the Brisbane River with the illusive Threadfin Salmon and Mulloway; however, Snapper is a species that is also caught in the Brisbane River. Sharing the same nursery, Snapper target the same bait school that the Threadfin and Mulloway eat.... Structure, Structure Structure! Its all about the pylons and Structure in the Brisbane river that attracts the Snapper into the river. Besides feeding on the bait fish that hides in these structures, the Snappers are also known to pick off mussel and oyster shells that litter the Pylons and Rocks of the Brisbane River. Baiting: Herring or Prawns seem to be a very popular bait for snapper fishing. Most of these live baits can be collected on the numerous boat ramps scattered all over the Brisbane River. A 3/0 hook thru the back of a live herring or prawn should entice most snapper from the surrounding area to engulf your bait. Anchor your boat 30m off any visible structure and cast your bait as close as you can into any visible structure. Using the current and tide to carry your bait into the desired spot. Lures: Using Vibration style lures prove to be a very effective way, of targeting them. By using a drift style method, utilizing the electric motor, we are able to cast into structure along the river, while covering a large area of water. Setup for Catching Snapper in the Brisbane River 1) 20 lb Braided line 2) 30 lb fluorocarbon leader 3) 20 to 28 gram Vibration Lure 4) 12 ~ 20 lbs Baitcast or spinning outfit. 5) Soft or Hard vibration lure 70 to 90mm works best. Selection/choice of vibes rely heavily on the condition of the water. With natural colours in clear water and Bright/Glow colours when the water is muddy or at night. Hopefully with these tips will help you in targeting this species of fish and give you an insight into our vibing style in the Brisbane River.

08.01.2022 Mangrove jack on lures The Mangrove jack (Lutjanus argentimaculatus), also know as a Mangrove Red Snapper is like its real name sake, actually a species of snapper. Did you know This species is carnivorous; they are predators, feeding mainly at night on fish, crustaceans and other bait fish. Thats why great success is achieved when chasing them in our local creeks and rivers at night. These ambush predators also often dwell around mangrove roots, fallen trees, rock walls,... and any other snag areas where smaller prey reside for protection. Lure fishing for Jacks is a popular way of targeting these Brutes. A sturdy baitcasting or spinning outfit preferably around the 10~20lbs mark, loaded with 20lbs braid in your reel is what you will need to ensure the capture of these much sought after and very respected fish. Because these fish are structure dwellers and ambush their prey with a vicious attack on anything passing close enough to its lair. Casting must be spot on! A perfectly placed lure inches from the target snag is required to entice the fish out of its lair. Alert! Alert! Alert! Always!!!
