01.01.2022 ABOUT ACKNOWLEDGEMENT Most people who are part of the reconciliation movement are familiar with the customs of Welcome to Country or the complementary Acknowledgement of Country. In general, they echo ancient rituals that occurred every day across this continent in a myriad of transactions and settings for the First Nations people. Although there is no strict form of words for a Welcome or Acknowledgement certain phrases have become important. One such phrase that can giv...e people a furrowed brow is to acknowledge elders past, present and emerging. What does emerging elders mean? There may be processes in place for people to be recognized as elders in more traditionally oriented communities but for many postcolonial First Nations communities in urban or regional areas there may be no such process and people may just emerge over time as they demonstrate wisdom, knowledge, responsibility and care for their community. But even more important than the process is the use of the three timeframes; past, present and future. We had elders in the past, we have elders now and we will in the future. This suggests an important continuity in time and also a cyclical view of existence. Like seasons, or phases of the moon, life revolves in a cycle; people live then die, but they live again in the memories of the people coming after them. That way the community remains joined through a cycle of memories that mimic the cycle of life. So remember, there are elders past, present and future and they all are here now and for all time as the memories and stories we share.
