24.01.2022 On Wednesday, Police Liaison Officers Michelle Murray and Hong Ma visited our Year 5 and 6 students to discuss Cyber safety. Some of the topics discussed including selecting strong user names and passwords (without personal details), how to use technology to have fun safely, being respectful online, thinking before you post and knowing what information is okay to share online. The importance of knowing to report anything suspicious to an adult was also discussed. Information packs are being sent home with Year 5 and 6 students, but parents are also able to visit https://thinkuknow.org.au/ for further information about the program.

24.01.2022 Balaclava State School is proud to be working with the North Queensland Cowboys in implementing The Resilience Project to improve the mental health and wellbeing of our students and staff. This project focuses on the benefits of GEM (Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness).

24.01.2022 Balaclava Kindy is one of the few kindergartens in Queensland offering 'Kindy at no cost' in 2021. To be eligible, children must be 4 years old by 30 June 2021 and their families need to hold a Health Care Card/ Concession Card or be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. If you have a child that you would like to enrol in Kindy in 2021 or require further information, please do not hesitate to contact the Balaclava Kindy by telephoning 4033 5182.

23.01.2022 This morning we welcomed many proud parents to our school for the end of year Presentation Ceremony. It was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the great efforts made by our students during this schooling year. Awards were presented in the following categories:- Attendance Awards - celebrating students who achieved 100% attendance during 2020; GEM Awards - presented to students who have consistently displayed exemplary behaviour throughout the entire year;... Curriculum Encouragement Awards - given to students who are always striving to achieve; Curriculum Silver Awards - recognising students who have excelled academically; Curriculum Gold Awards - presented to the top achiever academically in each year level; Students of the Year (Humanities and Social Sciences, Physical Education and Music) - awarded to one Year 6 student per subject who has made significant achievements in that specialist subject; Principal's Encouragement Award - presented to the Year 6 student who has consistently displayed excellence in their learning and behaviour throughout the year; Dux Award - awarded to the Year 6 student who in the current academic year, has achieved a consistently very high academic level in all subject areas and an exceptional level of behaviour. 20.01.2022 Yesterday, we held our final celebration of our students for 2020 by holding a Beehive Morning Tea for students who have achieved 200 Balaclava Bucks. This award recognises and acknowledges a students’ commitment to Balaclava’s four values; Be Respectful, Be Organised, Be a Learner and Be Safe. Congratulations to all students who received this award!

19.01.2022 This morning Balaclava staff and students celebrated Book Week by holding their Book Week parade. The costumes were amazing and the excitement amongst everyone was contagious!

19.01.2022 Centacare's School Savvy Pop up shop is now open! Open 10am - 2pm every week day from 5th January 2021 to 28th January 2021 at 86 Anderson Street, Manunda. School Savvy is a Centacare FNQ initiative which facilitates access to school uniforms and school supplies for children in families struggling financially in the busy back to school period at the start of the school year.

12.01.2022 Every Tuesday afternoon thanks to Cairns Safer Streets and Aspire to be Deadly Hockey, free hockey lessons are held at Balaclava State School from 2.45pm - 3.45pm. Students who are wishing to join the program are required to complete a form at the office. Participants from 2020 are welcome to rejoin the program without completing a new form.

06.01.2022 This morning, Mrs Freier had the absolute pleasure of opening our newly established Faith Room. This room has been created to provide a dedicated space to acknowledge and celebrate the diversity of our students. Thank you to the guests who attended, including representatives from the Cairns Islamic Society and Cairns Mosque, Mahamuni Buddist Society, SU Queensland (School Chaplaincy), Chappy Thomas, Karen Roome, staff, parents and students.

05.01.2022 A reminder that our Year 6 Graduation Ceremony will be held on Monday, 7th December 2020 at 12pm. The payment deadline for the one adult attending has been extended until this afternoon. If you have not yet done so, please arrange for the payment of $10 to be made by this afternoon. Our photographer has also advised that two sizes of prints will now be available on the day - 6" x 8" for $10 each or a larger 8" x 12" for $15 each. Photos will be printed immediately. Family groups are welcome to attend the school from 11am for photos, however only the one adult per student will be able to attend the ceremony. All other adults will be required to leave the school grounds to ensure our school complies with current COVID-19 restrictions.

05.01.2022 Yesterday we celebrated 100% attendance with Matty Bowen from the Cowboys. Matty talked to the students about the importance of coming to school every day and handed out prizes to the students with 100% attendance. Have a great weekend and we look forward to seeing everyone on Monday.

This mini pop-up shop is open for 1 DAY ONLY and located at the Mooroobool Hub, 2 Shang Str...eet in Mooroobool so, if you are in the Mooroobool area get down there as soon as you can. Our final bus to the main pop-up shop in Manunda will run from the Mooroobool shop at 12:30 pm. For people with transport issues who can make it to Shang Street, this may be an opportunity for you to get to the main shop in Manunda, as well. UnitingCare (Cairns) and The Smith Family (Cairns) will also be available at the Mooroobool Hub until 2 pm for anyone who is looking for further support around finances and savings. 03.01.2022 Our staff supported the Frocktober campaign to raise funds for cancer research on Friday. The more staff wearing frocks or floral shirts, the more money Mrs Freier and Ms Mohammed donated 28 of our team dressed up and also made individual donations. We gave almost $200 to the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation Well done team!

01.01.2022 During Science today, 4C were investigating the effect water has on erosion. Students were required to pour differing amounts of water on to a sandcastle and observe what happened to the height of the sandcastle.
