25.01.2022 A Great Hack To Reduce Knee Pain When Running Everyone is out running. It is awesome to see and people are getting hooked. However the phone has been ringing a lot from people with sore knees. In particular the front of the knee or knee cap. Its called patello femoral syndrome. I use the anaology of a train (the knee cap) not quite on the train track (the leg bone underneath the knee cap). Its mostly caused by your thigh muscles not quite working well together. Aside from ...Physio which is extremely useful, try another research based hack to get your pain under control. Studies have found that if you increase your cadence (how many steps you take in a minute) by 10 it can reduce your pain levels and also allow you to run further without pain. How do you do this? A metronome or an app with an inbuilt metronome. I recommend an app called Run Cadence. Click test and run for two minutes. It will tell you what your cadence is. Then click run and add 10 beats to your initial score. Try running like that for short intervals of 2 to 3 minutes at a time to get used to the new cadence. Slowly add more time at the new cadence durning your run to help get that pain under control

24.01.2022 One Day To Go Shout out to all my Gym People who have suffered so brutally during this time. Some of the most passionate, innovative and hard working people on this planet. It was horrible watching how badly you were all affected. Last year in June I went to Europe for a month and over indulged in carbs, wine and sitting. I came back to my local F45 Gym in Avalon and decided I was going to lose all that weight in 1 week. 5 days in a row I picked up a kettle bell in the first... 5 mins of the class and my back locked up. Id never had back pain before. It took me 4 weeks before I could get back in the gym. I was miserable for the next 3 weeks. Dont be me. Ease into it. Your body is used to sitting on a crap seat for too long and more than likely a bit of walking. Play the long game. Have recovery days. You dont need to train every day. BUT Support your local gym. Dont put your membership on hold. Play the long game. They all deserve it! We are blessed in Sydney with so many legend trainers and gyms. Ill be the first to admit the first couple of chapters on the microbiome, DNA, RNA etc didnt exactly get me pumped but the chapters on what we can do now to slow the aging process, reduce pain and inflammation were really useful. 17.01.2022 This is a genuine shout out to our amazing in-house Pilates team. After convincing me that we should buy these bizarre looking contraptions - the allegro pro 2 reformer. I was scared, maybe not scared but definitely nervous when I first started training on them. Being a guy in his 40s that has been fairly bashed up from a life of rugby and martial arts, it is common for me to spend the first part of the morning in a fair amount of pain. Things just hurt a bit more than they... used to. So anyways I used my cues for my ribs and worked on getting my trunk control better. I decided I was sick of being sore and especially much more sore after martial arts than I was 10 years ago. I decided to pull the trigger and go twice per week. Using my cues throughout the class week after week, made me do them automatically throughout day to day life. Bad patterns i got myself in, id suddenly catch myself and get out of the bad posture or habit. I started not getting so sore after training and now when Iget out of bed I have no pain. So maybe there is something to this pilates...Ive always done yoga but now get very grumpy if I have to miss my pilates class. Im actually starting to really like it. So if youre not exactly springing out of bed in the morning and your recovery after exercise isnt what it was a few years ago - id genuinely encourage you to at least give it a trial. #pilates #reformer #balanceinmotion
17.01.2022 I was having a beer with a couple of mates and one of them was going on about how good the Tony Robbins 4 day event was he went to last year. I kind of laughed and thought it was a bit funny and dismissed it. Then I saw on netflix the Tony Robbins documentary I am not your guru and finally as the internet does, started spamming me with offers to do the first ever 4 day virtual Tony Robbins Unlimited Power seminar. The guy has coached the past 5 presidents, Oprah Winfrey, ...Connor Mcgregor, half of the successful hollywood stars and some incredible athletes on the planet. So anyways I got to thinking what the hell, Ill sign up. I dont need to leave the house. Its just a casual 4 x 12 hour day starting at 2.30 am every day. There was some pretty incredible stuff, I would say life changing, there was plenty of trying to upsell me into the next course and some stuff that got me out of my comfort zone which is good. But so many things he said kept reminding me of the things people say in the clinic surrounding their injuries and body. In particular their beliefs. Beliefs in their body that are truly holding them back from having a far better life. Exercise and sport they stopped doing even though they loved it because of their beliefs. Think of the comradery training brings with other people, think of the health benefits and the mental health by still doing exercise you love. Stopped because of your own beliefs getting in the way. So I got to thinking. What are some of my fave beliefs? I hear that if people are removed they could get them feeling better about their bodies with more trust in them that they arent going to fall apart tomorrow.
16.01.2022 Looking forward to the day we are all back in the same room. Trouble shooting tricky cases, pushing our skills, trying to be better than we were the day before. Has been tough for us as a team but we have adapted bringing free pilates classes, changing to online, answering the phones remotely and having our weekly skills in-services via zoom. Still there is nothing better than that human connection in the present. Especially with these legends. Hopefully sooner rather than later However we are still open if you want to get that injury sorted today.

13.01.2022 I hope everyone had an amazing Easter break given the circumstances. One of the things Ive found that has gone is my evening routine before bed. A Sports Dietician told me to increase my hours from 5 to 7 and didnt change anything else. I lost 3kgs in a week! After that I was sold. Since this self isolation Ive been watching Netflix until midnight (tiger king ) then going straight to bed, waking up feeling like crap. Two days ago I changed back to this routine - I credit... Matthew Walker sleep expert. Routine Go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time. Get as close to 8 hours as possible Dim the lights an hour before bed Put your phone on flight mode an hour before bed and no screens an hour before (tricks your brain into thinking its daytime ) Have a shower just before bed so your body initiates sleep mode No coffee after 1 Have some sleep tea (available at every supermarket) with a dash of apple cider vinegar read some fiction. 12.01.2022 Did you know we are one of the only clinics in Australia to use the Thoracic Ring Approach to treat the trunk and ribs. It used to be an area that us Physiotherapists used to ignore (except giving it a good crack yes im guilty). Dr LJ Lee created the model of describing ribs as rings where both sides of the ribs, breast bone and thoracic back bones were connected as one ring. There are movements between the rings and sometimes because of imbalances between our shallow b...ig muscles and deep stabilizing muscles they can move poorly or sub optimally. This imbalance of the trunk muscles can lead to all sorts of things such as a sore hip, ITB pain in runners, headaches. You name it. 08.01.2022 "I used to run but stopped because I thought it gave you arthritis" FALSE There is no study to say that running is bad for your knees! Not one.... Obviously if you have had a previous serious injury to your knee then this is a different scenario but for the vast majority of people who havent had a serious knee injury there is no evidence for the above. However when you compare this to the benefits of running on your general health, cardiovascular system and mental health it is an absolute no brainer. So get back out and run but just build slowly OR ill end up seeing you soon!

07.01.2022 Did you know that scans (X-rays, MRI’s, Ultrasounds, etc) don’t always reveal the full story A study was undertaken in 2014 that showed that 50% of asymptomatic men and women, when their lower back was imaged, actually had a disc bulge, despite them not reporting any pain. What this helps us to understand is that what we see on a scan does not always equal pain. It is really common to have a patient who has brought the scan of their sore body part in, yet the scan couldn’t ...find anything wrong with them. 03.01.2022 Got Achilles Pain or calf tightness when you run? These exercises are an awesome way of settling achilles pain and also strengthening your soleus calf muscle. You can try 3 x 6 reps with a heavy weight if you need some strength or 1-2 x 20 with a lighter weight if you need some endurance. Enjoy!

03.01.2022 One of the questions we get asked a lot is do you dry needle? The answer is yes. All of our physiotherapists have done extensive training in dry needling. So what is dry needling? It is when we use an acupuncture needle to help relax tight muscles. Why do we do it? For a few reasons, if some one has developed poor muscle synergy patterns or muscles are in spasm and can be really effective at relaxing these muscles quickly leading to pain relief in the short term. This pave...s the way for the brain to use a more efficient effective way to move to not overload these tight muscles in the long term. Why do I personally prefer it to massage?
