25.01.2022 Balance Mat synergy with Strength for Life The Council on the Ageing (#COTA) has decided to replicate its successful #StrengthForLife exercise program across Australia. The COTA Strength for Life program started in Adelaide, with COTA SA’s Jeannette Richards building an #agewell fitness program around the Multimetric Balance Mat and introducing seniors exercise class service providers from around South Australia to the #MultimetricBalanceMat product. After preliminary meeting...s in Sydney between COTA SA’s Strength for Life Coordinator Jeannette Richards, Balance Mat Pty Ltd Managing Director Ian Bergman and COTA NSW’s Strength for Life Coordinator Kamilla Haufort, it was agreed that the Multimetric Balance Mat would be demonstrated to NSW Strength for Life course providers over the next few weeks. The idea is to incorporate #balancemeasurement using the Balance Mat into NSW COTA’s Strength for Life classes across New South Wales as the program rolls out. 20.01.2022 Ian Bergman thrilled at results from testing at the Parkinson's ACT Seminar 'Living your best life now' on Thursday 29 November. David Smith is in his 80's living with Parkinson's Disease. The Unimetric Balance Mat accurately recorded his pattern of movements and his score of 0.41 indicates a relatively mild level of Parkinsons's (a score above 0.6 indicates poor balance and a falls risk). The Balance Mat is already a powerful tool. But do people with Parkinson's have a signature graphical pattern that the mat can detect? If so, can the Balance Mat identify Parkinson's at an early stage in people with minor balance problems? can the Balance Mat be an early stage bio-indicator? Watch for future developments.

07.01.2022 How is Balance defined? In biomechanics, balance is an ability to maintain the line of gravity (vertical line from centre of mass) of a body within the base of support with minimal postural sway. Sway is the horizontal movement of the centre of gravity even when a person is standing still. In the case of an individual standing quietly upright, the limit of stability is defined as the amount of postural sway at which balance is lost and corrective action is required. How do we... maintain Balance? Maintaining balance requires coordination of input from multiple sensory systems including the vestibular, somatosensory, and visual systems. The senses must detect changes of spatial orientation with respect to the base of support, regardless of whether the body moves or the base is altered. While balance is mostly an automatic process, voluntary control is common. Active control usually takes place when a person is in a situation where balance is compromised. What can affect our Balance? Age, gender, and height have all been shown to impact an individual's ability to balance and the assessment of that balance. There are environmental factors that can affect balance such as light conditions, floor surface changes, alcohol, drugs, fatigue and ear infection. Age-related decline in the ability of the multiple sensory systems to receive and integrate sensory information contributes to poor balance in older adults. As a result, the elderly are at an increased risk of falls. Why should we measure Balance? The complexity of balance allows for many confounding variables to affect a person's ability to stay upright. Since balance is a key predictor of recovery and is required in so many of our activities of daily living, it is often introduced into treatment plans by physiotherapists and occupational therapists when dealing with geriatrics, patients with neurological conditions, or others whom they have determined it to be beneficial. 04.01.2022 Balance Mat footprint extends to Singapore Balance Mat Associate Roger Hausmann has successfully introduced the Multimetric Balance Mat to a physiotherapy practice in Singapore. Thanks to this unique Australian patented product, Hallmark Physiotherapy can now routinely include #balancemeasurement in their clients’ balance assessments. ... Clients stand in four different standing positions: normal, tandem, left foot, right foot to have their balance ability and symmetry tested. Interestingly, the one-legged stance is often called the #stork or #flamingo. This assists in designing rehabilitation physiotherapy programs to promote optimum balance. Hallmark Physiotherapy has started to promote the use of the Multimetric Balance Mat in a video on their website https://www.facebook.com/hallmarkphysiotherapy/videos/681589355688907/ Hallmark Physiotherapy - Singapore #HallmarkPhysiotherapy #rehabilitationphysiotherapy #optimumbalance
