25.01.2022 Our friends at Australian Red Cross Lifeblood are open and calling out for anyone who is feeling well and is fit to come forward and donate blood. Various factors mean a lot of donors are currently unable to donate, but the need for blood never stops. In fact, Australia still needs 29,000 donors every week to meet demand. Donor centres remain open, are sanitised and safe. So, if youre fit or have a family member that can donate, please consider a donation or share this message with your friends https://www.donateblood.com.au/blood/toowoomba-donor-centre

24.01.2022 AVO TOAST TOPPERS Shephard avocados are back in shops (the best ones tbh) so it aws my topping of choice on my wholegrain toast this morning, with labneh, pepitas, a little kumato (black tomato), chilli flakes & coriander - but simple lime, salt & pepper also does the trick The Shepard avo season only lasts a couple months so get in while you can

22.01.2022 The highest level quality research we have has shown that coconut oil has NO IMPACT on weight, blood glucose control & inflammation, plus it raises bad cholesterol which increases your risk of heart disease & stroke. Yes it is delicious in baked goods & curries. Maybe it is good for your beauty routine?... No, it is not a health food. Listen to Dr Tim. Choose olive oil instead.

18.01.2022 BREAKFAST I was getting sick of my usual eggs on toast & porridge breakfasts so this week I took some inspo from my Japan trip a couple of years ago. Theres nothing better than hot steamed rice & ramen eggs for breakfast. I also had a coffee made on milk. This breakfast contains resistant starch from cooked, cooled & reheated/leftover rice & prebiotic fibre from spring onion to support gut health, as well as seaweed for an iodine boost to support thyroid function & meta...bolism. Including the fact that eggs are the richest dietary source of choline, this is one TTC friendly meal! I ran out of time this morning, but tomorrow I plan to add sauteed broccolini for more fibre & antioxidants & a little cup of miso soup with tofu for extra protein. If youd like to know more about fertility friendly foods, you can join me with QENDO this Thursday - to register www.qendo.org.au/events Ramen eggs are soft boiled eggs that are marinated in a soy/sake/mirin mix overnight & keep in the fridge all week. I got my recipe from Marion Grasby(search soy sauce eggs) See more

17.01.2022 Sunday reading I’ve often heard young women relieved at not having to deal with their period, but the damage of a missing period can be significant & it isn’t guaranteed to return all that quickly. https://www.abc.net.au//fertility-family-exercise/12553466

17.01.2022 WERE HERE FOR YOU We are all experiencing uncertainty in our lives at present, & thats why we will continue to support new & existing clients as much as we can. Allied health businesses have this morning been encouraged by the Federal Minister for Health, the Hon. Greg Hunt to continue operating as health appointments have been deemed essential services. We are following all guidelines outlined by health authorities, & have implemented strict hygiene & social distancin...g policies in clinic. It is however important that we all do what we can to limit our interaction with others, so for that reason we are encouraging appointments to be via phone or online/Zoom. Please call the clinic or email [email protected] to book or organise this. If you have returned from overseas in the past 14 days, you should be at home in quarantine. If you are a contact of a COVID-19 case, you should be in quarantine too. If you are experiencing respiratory symptoms (sore throat, cough, shortness of breath etc), with or without a fever, please do not attend the clinic. Contact your GP, go to www.health.gov.au or call 1800 020 080 for further advice. If you do fit in any of these categories, you can of course attend via phone or online as well. Times are going to be tough for small business, including Balance Nutrition. Advice is changing regularly & we will update you along the way. The best we can do at present is be calm & reasonable, & support each other. See more

16.01.2022 CHOCOLATE || WHY DO WE CRAVE IT BEFORE OUR PERIODS? Why is it that women not only suffer through the pain and discomfort of our ritual monthly bleeding, but also get smashed down with crazy, guilt-inducing cravings for sweets and high carbohydrate foods? After reviewing the current research, we believe that craving chocolate before our period is a mixture of physiology, psychology and cultural conditioning. Our hormonal changes during the days leading up to our menstrual cycl...e leave us feeling stressed and tired, which we try to eradicate by indulging in our favourite comfort foods. This ends up creating a cycle by which we crave high fat and sugar foods when we get our period every month. Here are a few tricks to that may help you keep these cravings at bay! 1. Lower your intake of refined carbs and coffee in the week or so leading up to your period 2. Increase your intake of protein and fibre before your period 3. Exercise 4. Allow yourself to indulge in some chocolate but keep it to a sensible amount

16.01.2022 HAPPY EASTER WEEKEND A little reminder from us at Balance Nutrition thats its okay to have a slower long weekend this year. Cook good food, drink nice wine/coffee/tea, spend time with family & friends (virtually if need be), potter in the garden, go for a walk, read a good book, catch up on sleep. Enjoy a hot cross bun & a choccie (or a few). Too often we have said were busy, theres too much to do, we never have time... but now we do. Take a deep breath & relax this weekend, be kind & compassionate to yourself, because no doubt well be back to the hustle & bustle of our old lives before we know it (And maybe consider some news free hours/days too)

16.01.2022 The ugly side of the #guthealth trend... It really is amazing to see the power of the gut starting to be recognised across the world BUT with that comes the ba...ndwagon effect... enter the spread of false information, along with fad products and even books filled with quackery, all to make a quick buck The reality is, whether its your neighbour, hairdresser, favourite artist or DJs, everyone has their own personal experience of nutrition and gut health, which means its all too tempting to hand out advice. Sadly some people have a way of positioning themselves as experts and giving the impression of credibility, even when theyre totally unqualified. They might say theyre backed by or have spoken to registered dietitians and scientists, but do they really get everything reviewed by nameless experts? Unlike registered clinicians, people arent legally obligated to tell the truth. Some even claim to be associated with a university, but keep in mind anyone can be a study participant(check out our website under research to get involved). THE TRUTH is gut health is complex and its easy to misinterpret or oversimplify the science, so much so that its at best meaningless, or at worst outright dangerous. I havent studied and worked my butt off as a dietitian and research fellow in the gut health field for 10+ years to let unqualified jokers try hijack the real science and manipulate it for their own profit. I am protective of you guys, you deserve the facts not the fads! So please protect yourselves, always check your sources and seek out highly trained professionals. Here are some questions to keep in mind. What are their credentials? Are they a registered dietitian or registered nutritionist themselves with specific qualifications or training in gut health, or are they just trying to exploit the trend? Are they making broad claims or giving advice without explaining the science or mentioning a clinical study? We cant completely stop junk info being shared (we have freedom of speech after all!) but we can demand better and be smarter with who we listen to. Dont take advice at face value and always be curious #loveyourgut

16.01.2022 EGGPLANT & LENTIL PASTA This recipe uses mostly pantry & kitchen staples. It makes 10 serves of sauce, so plenty to freeze 1 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, chopped... 2 bacon rashers, finely chopped 4 garlic, chopped 2 anchovy fillets, minced (optional) 1/4 tsp chilli flakes (or to taste) 1 tsp dried oregano 1 eggplant, 1cm diced 700ml passata + a handful of cherry tomatoes, halved OR 2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes 3 cubes frozen spinach 1 cup water 400g brown lentils, drained Heat olive oil in large frying pan over med-high heat, cook onion & bacon until onion is translucent. Add garlic, anchovy, chilli & oregano. Cook, stirring until anchovy disappears, about 1 min. Add eggplant, cook until starts to soften. Add passata/tomatoes & water. Heat until simmering then reduce to low heat, cook for 10 minutes until thickened slightly, then add lentils Serve with pasta of choice (rigatoni worked perfectly), & I also added basil, a spoon of ricotta & finely shaved Parmesan CHANGE IT UP Swap eggplant for 2 cups of any chopped vegetables - mushrooms & zucchini would also be delicious Double the canned lentils to make it a heftier sauce, more like a vegetarian bolognese. This could then be used as a filling for baked potatoes or sweet potatoes, as a nachos topping, or for lentil shepherds pie To make this vegetarian/vegan, omit the anchovies & bacon (& obviously the cheese) See more

15.01.2022 If you are pregnant & concerned about the impact the current COVID 19 pandemic could have on you, your baby & family, here is some sensible & reassuring advice from the president of the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists.

12.01.2022 QUARANTINE COOKING One of the silver linings of our current predicament is that most of us are cooking at home more than we usually do. So why not use this as an opportunity to mix it up a little? If you dont particularly care for steamed greens, try them other ways. BBQing broccolini is great, stir frying is also tasty, as is adding little extras like I have here. In addition to the feta & roast almonds, I made a simple dressing: 3 tsp olive oil... 2 tsp lemon juice (or your choice of vinegar) 1 tsp Dijon or seeded mustard 1 tiny garlic clove, grated Salt & pepper A few drops of maple syrup, to taste Shake in a screw top jar, then toss through greens whilst hot. We had this with garlic shrooms, mash & lean sausages #yum See more

Its also great to see other dietitians at these events, & always nice to catch up with Anna Reeves from Ask a Dietitian & Maddy & Emma Muirden from the Queensland Centre of Digestive Medicine. The lucky winner of the Cobram Estate Pack will be drawn tomorrow, so stay tuned

11.01.2022 SEED SPRINKLE I toasted some pepitas, buckwheat & roast almonds with a little butter, brown sugar & cinnamon to top my porridge with this week Rolled oats are the best - theyre cheap & easy to cook, not to mention high in soluble fibre which keeps you fuller for longer & keeps those gut bugs in tip top shape Oats are also a plain breakfast base so you can customize your oats to suit whatever flavours you love - My favourite is classic brown sugar & cinnamon, but I also love thick vanilla yoghurt (@siggisdairy of course), raspberries & toasted coconut. Whats your pick? #winterwarmers #porridge #breakfastprep

08.01.2022 COELIAC DISEASE || DOES IT IMPACT FERTILITY? Research tells us that women with undiagnosed Coeliac disease have an 8.9-fold increased risk of multiple miscarriage, compared with those who either dont have Coeliac disease or those who have well treated Coeliac disease. As Coeliac disease is an inflammatory condition, one of the areas that becomes inflamed is the villi in the small intestine where all our nutrients are absorbed from the food we eat. If were not absorbing the ...nutrients our body needs, then fertility rates drop as the body is not in a fit state to sustain a baby. So, should everyone having fertility problems commence a gluten free diet? Not so fast! If youre having fertility problems, it is worth being tested for Coeliac disease, regardless of whether you have the typical gastrointestinal symptoms or not. I have seen clients over the years who have Coeliac disease with the absence of bloating, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Other red flags include: Fatigue & weakness Recurrent mouth ulcers Easy bruising of the skin Low iron or B12 Anxiety &/or depression Altered mental alertness &/or irritability Skin rashes Unexplained weight loss (or gain) For more information on this topic, watch Nutrition Pluss interview with expert Coeliac dietitian, Sally Marchini from Marchini Nutrition https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilbYRlILI30

06.01.2022 LEGUMES || Not really sure what to do with canned legumes? Cannellini beans are a nice first step as they are soft & creamy, & soak up whatever flavours you put with them. Tuna & white bean is an amazing combo - particularly with crunchy Greek salad Plus an easy zingy salad dressing - 2:1 ratio of olive oil & lemon juice, with salt, pepper & dried oregano Were getting this classic warm weather salad combo in one more time before the cold weather arrives this weekend

05.01.2022 FLAVOUR BOMB I am always talking to clients about making meals interesting & tasty! This Thai Beef Salad is cold & warm at the same time, plus crunchy, fresh, meaty, sour, sweet, salty & spicy. It is such a joy to eat. THAI BEEF SALAD || 2 serves 250g eye or scotch fillet steak, marinated for 10 mins in 1 tbsp fish sauce, 1 tsp palm/brown sugar & 1/2 tsp black pepper ... 8-10 cherry toms, halved 1/2 large cucumber, diced 1/4 red onion, sliced 3 radishes, sliced 1 long red chilli, finely chopped 1/2 cup mint 1/4 cup coriander Sprinkle of chilli powder, to taste (if you like spice - this is optional) Steamed rice, to serve DRESSING 1 1/2 tbsp fish 1 1/2 tbsp lime juice 1 1/2 tbsp palm/brown sugar Adjust to best suit your taste - it should be balanced between sweet, sour & salty. I usually add a little more lime juice. Drain off excess marinade from steak, & cook in a hot pan to your liking (3 mins each side for medium) Let the steak rest for as long as you cooked it, before thinly slicing & adding to other salad ingredients in a large bowl Add half the dressing, then taste. Add more dressing to taste if you wish. This salad is a good source of iron because it contains red meat & a source of vitamin C (from the lime juice & tomatoes) which helps to increase iron absorption #thaibeefsalad #quickdinner #tastysalads

03.01.2022 MYO DINNERS I absolutely love make your own dinners where everyone puts together their own meal at the table - think tacos & burrito bowls, wraps, rice paper rolls, homemade pizzas or like I have here - bulgogi beef lettuce cups This is a really great way to make dinners more social & help kids learn about food in an environment where they are in more control over what goes onto their plate (less pressure, less fuss!) The trick is to offer a variety of coloured salads & vege, plus a source of carbohydrate, some protein & bonus add on extras to make dinner extra tasty. These extras could be guac, cheese, chilli or herbs (I used mint & kimchi) Note: if doing lettuce wraps/cups of any kind, I recommend using much bigger lettuce leaves than the mini cos

02.01.2022 DO YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENCE? Hypothyroidism & Hashimotos have the same symptoms because they both refer to a low thyroid function. But there is a big difference between them! Hashimotos occurs due to an inflamed & damaged thyroid gland caused by antibodies produced by you - this means Hashimotos is an autoimmune condition. This is the most common reason for low thyroid function in Australia. Hypothyroidism without antibodies is less common, & can be caused due to iodine d...eficiency, thyroid surgery or radiation treatment, an over reaction to treatment for hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland), medications or a pituitary disorder. Lots of clients I see dont know if their hypothyroidism is of an autoimmune origin. Why is this important? Because if you have one autoimmune condition, you are more likely to have others, such as Coeliac disease, pernicious anaemia (B12 deficiency) or rheumatoid arthritis. You can ask your GP to do a simple blood test to detect thyroid antibodies to indicate whether your hypothyroidism is actually Hashimotos. We can help you to successfully manage these symptoms with the food you eat - but how we do this totally depends on you & your situation

02.01.2022 Did you know there is a link between thyroid disease and Coeliac Disease, as both can have an autoimmune basis? If you have thyroid disease, it is worth getting screened for Coeliac Disease - you do not have to experience gastrointestinal symptoms or unexplained weight loss to have Coeliac Disease
