24.01.2022 Interesting read on the rise of fenced dog parks in the US, and how they've shaped public spaces. It focuses on the first known dog park in the world "ohlone dog park' in Berkeley, SF. Some years ago i visited this park and have a photo of the hydrant she is talking about. Dog parks were introduced in SA in the mid 1990's with the first dog park opening in 1995. Zoei Sutton thanks for this. In the article there is a link to a book Placing Animals (geography of human-animal relations). Right up my alley.

23.01.2022 What do you do with your dog's poo? Are you a dog owner living in Australia? Want to be part of a groundbreaking scientific study? We invite you to complete a short, anonymous, 10-15 minute survey on your views and habits around collection and disposal of dog faeces. This study is part of a PhD project investigating the potential for domestic dog faeces to be composted at home for use in backyard food production. Emily is a PhD student conducting an Australian-wide survey about how dog owners manage their pet’s waste. It is active on Survey Monkey for the next 3 months. Take a few moments to participate in the survey below. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/DogFaecesDisposal

10.01.2022 How can we 'animalise' our public places? Thinking back to one of my first dog park projects with Aspect Studios, and the importance of creating a sense of movement/circulation in parks to minimize conflict or what I call 'hot spots'. The video illustrates this sense of movement. One of the other important characteristics in dog park design is the creation of different spaces and experiences for the dogs in the space - by exploring the different senses. I try to introduce different textures (ground surfaces), movement (plants that have a sense of movement) and plants that are hardy for dogs to run through, sniff and explore. These are places where dogs can linger. See video below and previous project on sensory gardens for dogs. #sensoryplay #doglover #doglife #dogpark #dogparkfun

03.01.2022 Designing sensory spaces and paths with dogs in mind. Here are some examples we used in a concept. What could a sensory garden for dogs include? A sensory garden encourages the user to engage with the five senses by exploring the garden: Smell plants and herbs Sight recycled tyres, rocks and logs... Sound plants that rustle, walking on dried leaves, running water, wind chimes, textured paths Taste plants and herbs Touch different surfaces such as sand, wood, creek pebbles, mulch, and plant with different textures Sensory spaces can be included in a garden, or along a pathway or trail with sensory nodes for dogs. #sensoryplay #doglover #doglife #dogpark #dogparkfun See more
