25.01.2022 I’m sure something quite serious was being discussed here. I love the way Archie has taken on the responsibility for the pup totally and fully. I must admit when he first mentioned he wanted a dog I thought the novelty might wear off when the reality set in. But he has taken the care for her completely in his stride, from feeding to training.... to cleaning up her messes!!! And boy - does she love him for it! 23.01.2022 I’ve recently discovered that letting kids grow up and become independent is waaaay harder than changing nappies and night time feeds and picking schools. . . Knowing that harvest was about to start and that Archie would be heading off has had me very tearful lately. 21.01.2022 It’s been a busy week on the farm, starting the week off pregnancy scanning our ewes, and finished the week off with a couple of days of crutching. The long days meant that the normal jobs had to be done at the end of the day, with a race to beat the sun going down!

Don’t worry, we are still staying at Balancing Rock, but this new one is a 10 minute drive away and will supplement our current farm perfectly. . . 16.01.2022 Wrapped up cauliflower!!! I talked about this in my Instagram stories last week and had few queries... so here goes... . This process is called blanching and is done to stop sunlight hitting the developing vegetables. Sunlight is a crucial factor in the development of chlorophyll which gives plants their colour. It also can make the plants a bit tougher and not as sweet... . So... when you first see the small head of cauliflower starting to emerge, grab the large outer leaves... and loosely tie them up over the head. Later in the day is best as cauliflower is quite susceptible to fungus, so you don’t want to trap moisture in. The heads develop quite quickly so you’ll need to check inside regularly. . . Blanching has no effect on the nutritional content of the plant, but does make it more tender and sweeter! . . This can also be done to leeks (to get the long white stems) celery and asparagus- and probably others. Any other questions?? See more

13.01.2022 Every lambing season brings new surprises. This year it has been the amount of triplets we have had! This little guy had a rough start to life, being the runt in a set of triplets... . . I always carry a lambing kit around with me when checking our lambing ewes, and in it there’s a tube of colostrum. . . When I found this fella he was very weak, and I felt he may be missing out on a feed (ewes only have two teats). Not wanting to remove him completely from his family I gave... him some colostrum and left him to it. I checked him on and off for the next few hours and he seemed to be going okay. . . Luckily his (or her???) mum was awesome and didn’t travel far so I could keep my eye on them. He’s still a bit smaller than his brothers (sisters???) but certainly very healthy - 2nd pic is the family!! . . Sometimes we do have to bring a lamb up to the house and foster it onto a bottle, but the best result is always to keep them with their ewe!! See more

10.01.2022 It’s was far too nice a day today to spend it inside working on the bedroom reno. When Jaz suggested I go for a walk with her (and Rosco and Maddy) I jumped at it! We did a lap of the sheep and cattle paddocks checking the troughs. . Cattle, in particular can be very tough on water troughs. They scratch on them, which can damage them, or damage the fittings that fill them, and if they run out of water they can do even more damage, the ting to get a drink. So at this time of y...ear especially, they need to be checked every few days. . We gave Maddy a swim on the way home. 02.01.2022 Processed nectarines this afternoon, skins and all - chopped into quarters, then a medium syrup (1 cup sugar/litre of water) poured over. Then they were processed in a water bath for 75 minutes.
