25.01.2022 She fought for her rights and rights of her community, and continues to do so. Always Was, Always Will Be. Banduk Marika is a printmaker, community leader and a...rts administrator. Here we see her twice in the same portrait by Anne Zahalka. On the left, as the award-winning artist and on the right, striding powerfully, as April Phillips described in our recent virtual program, like a "total boss" After studying at the National Art School in Sydney, Marika returned to Yirrkala in 1988 where she managed the Buku-Larrnggay Arts Centre while continuing work as an artist and educator. To date, Marika has served on boards for organisations including the Australia Council, the National Gallery of Australia and Bangarra Dance Theatre; and for more than two decades has been involved in education, conservation and advocacy work as a member of bodies such as the Northern Land Council and Landcare. 22.01.2022 David Hockney - The Interview (2019) From 1 March, the colossal works of David Hockney will be on display in the Netherlands. For the first time, this spectacul...ar exhibition offers an extensive and colourful exploration of the common ground between the work of Vincent van Gogh and David Hockney. Hockney: "His paintings are full of movement. What people love about Van Gogh’s paintings is that all the brush marks are visible and you can see how they are painted. When you’re drawing one blade of grass you’re looking and then you see more. And then you see the other blades of grass and you’re always seeing more. Well, that’s exciting to me and it was exciting to Van Gogh. I mean, he saw very clearly". "The world is colourful. It is beautiful, I think. Nature is great. Van Gogh worshipped nature. He might have been miserable, but that doesn’t show in his work. There are always things that will try to pull you down. But we should be joyful in looking at the world". - David Hockney Production: Mals Media Director: Kay Lindhout Interview: Else Siemerink Production: Anna Jordans & Else Siemerink DOP: Victor Horstink Edit: Tobias Cornelissen Sound: Koos van der Vaart Music: Arling & Cameron / Modern Day Composers Translation: Joey Meeuwisse Online edit & color grading: SALT Amsterdam Audio post processing: Bob Kommer Studio’s Licensed materials courtesy of: David Hockney: A Bigger Picture (2009) a film by Bruno Wollheim, Coluga Pictures. 11.01.2022 Now open // David Hockney: Drawing from Life . David Hockney (b. 1937) is one of the most internationally respected and renowned artists alive... today. This exhibition will be the first to focus on his portraits on paper and one of very few exhibitions to investigate his drawing practice. Featuring about 100 drawings, the exhibition will trace a trajectory from Hockney’s early works as a student, to his Ingres-like portraits of the 1970s, and his return to the sketchbooks in the early 2000s. . . . 11.01.2022 One of the Dutch Masters, Rembrandt is known for his self-portraits and his biblical scenes. We highly recommend this exhibition catalogue that traces Rembrandt...’s later years. You will explore his expressive and radical artistic style as well as his remarkable body of work. This catalogue was published to accompany the ‘Rembrandt: The Late Works’ exhibition at the National Gallery and includes some of his best-loved paintings: ‘A Woman bathing in a Stream’, his unflinching ‘Self Portrait at the Age of 63’ and ‘The Jewish Bride’, along with a large number of his extraordinary etchings that reveal his mastery. You can order the catalogue here: https://bit.ly/2YGK4HY Every purchase supports the National Gallery.

08.01.2022 Vernon Ah Kee’s original Cantchant installation included surfboards printed with Yidinji shield designs and portraits of the artist’s family. The face on this s...hield is Ah Kee’s great-grandfather, George Sibley. The original source material of the drawings are these archival images of my great-grandparents and my grandfather from Palm Island they were basically a scientific record. But what was particular about the images to me was the gaze, this very intense gaze, and profoundly affected me a gaze of endurance and persistence and intelligence and emotion and depth. 07.01.2022 Don’t miss out! Experience the 22nd Biennale of Sydney before we close our doors next weekend. Be amazed by Huma Bhaba’s towering, fantastical figures, harnesse...d from deep imagination. Come face to face with these commanding, apocalyptic hybrids that blend forms, significations and symbols. Seductive as much as they are repellent, they emanate colonialism, war, displacement and memories of place. Our doors are open all weekend, from 10am5pm. #NIRIN2020 Image: Huma Bhabha, left to right: The Past is a Foreign Country, wood, cork, Styrofoam, acrylic, oil stick, wire, skull, shredded tyre tread; Waiting for Another Game, 2018, cork, Styrofoam, wood, acrylic, oil stick; installation view, 22nd Biennale of Sydney: NIRIN, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Sydney, 2020, image courtesy the artist and Museum of Contemporary Art Australia the artist, photograph: Ken Leanfore

02.01.2022 Vale Ron Cobb. Died 21 September Genius. Cartoonist, Film Designer, 300 cartoons, 40 films, Artwork and Design! I loved his work. I was particularly affected ...by his work in The Digger, Circa 1974. Independent publishers Wild & Woolley published a "best of" collection of the earlier cartoon books, The Cobb Book in 1975. I managed foolishly, to lose my copy. See more

01.01.2022 HOW DID YOU BECOME A CURATOR? This is a question I get asked a lot! There are a few different ways you can become a curator, but I completed a Master of Art Cu...ratorship, during which I did some internships to learn more about the industry. I then went on to work in commercial and public galleries in Victoria and London. I did complete a Bachelor of Fine Art at the start, but I would say if you are thinking about becomign a curator, a passion for the arts is the first step! #askacurator #GippslandArtGallery #PGAVgalleries #VicGalleriesFromHome #AustralianPublicGalleries #GippsArtAtHome #ArtAtHome @askacurator
