16.01.2022 Over the weekend of 12 - 13 September 2020, Bald Hills Joey Scouts and Cub Scouts held a joint camp at Murrenbong Scout Camp. This excited and energetic bunch of 5 - 10 year olds engaged in an action-packed weekend where they worked towards various stages of their Paddling, Camping and Bushcraft badges. They also completed bases where they acquired new skills and honed existing skills in navigation, safe fire preparation and lighting, and pioneering, culminating in the constr...uction of see-saws - which proved more popular than any electronic device. The weekend incorporated the obligatory campfire under the stars, and a Scouts’ Own. Word spread like wild fire that Ruru (Group Leader and chief cook and bottle washer) had in his possession a secret stash of Tim Tam’s, which proved an over whelming treat with hot milo around the campfire. For many of the youth members, this was their first night away from home, never mind spending time under canvas, but there were no instances of home sickness over the weekend. In their Review of the camp, the youth members commented that it was awesome, when can we do this again, and the food was yummy. They all expressed a desire to learn new pioneering and knotting techniques in the future, extend their experience in navigation and orienteering, and further develop their paddling and boating skills. Leaders commented that the combination of Joey Scouts and Cub Scouts allowed the Cub Scouts to step-up and accept leadership and mentoring responsibilities for the younger Joey Scouts. Patrols formed and functioned naturally, and there were countless examples of ‘Participates’, ‘Assists’ and ‘Leads’ being noted by leaders towards the youth members Milestones. It is a credit to the Youth Program that such a young group of campers now have opportunities available where they can experience a weekend of safe adventurous outdoor activities, living together under canvas, and developing their interpersonal skills in cooperation, responsibility, and resilience. Here’s looking to their next adventure! Want more info on our Group check out our website: www.baldhillsscoutgroup.com.au
