25.01.2022 Meet LOKI the 4 year old Staffy. Unfortunately, Loki had ruptured his right hind & left hind cruciate ligament & and was referred to Dr Stephen in Baldivis Vet Advanced Surgery Centre all the way from the tropical paradise of Broome. Loki came in for Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) Surgery and had to have this procedure performed on both legs (3 months apart). ... Injury to the cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) is the most common cause of hind limb lameness in dogs. It can be due to either a partial or complete rupture of the ligament. Rupture of the ligament may result in damage to other structures in the knee such as the meniscus (cushions). The rupture causes marked instability in the knee and accelerates the progression of osteoarthritis (OA). Left untreated it may result in permanent severe pain and lameness. Various surgical methods exist to stabilize the knee following cruciate ligament rupture. The decision as to which procedure is best suited for your pet will depend on various factors including the size of your dog, age, joint biomechanics and expected athletic outcome. It is quite common for both knees to be affected, or to have the other knee rupture a cruciate ligament shortly after the first knee. TPLO is considered one of the best surgeries available for cruciate disease. TPLO surgery involves cutting the shin bone (tibia) and rotating the weight bearing surface of the knee and then applying a surgical steel plate to fix it in this position. This allows us to alter the angles in the knee joint in such a way so as to reduce the adverse effects of the ruptured ligament. Once the bone has healed the implants become redundant, and all of the stresses are carried through normal bone, tendons and muscle. Therefore once healed, the implants are not prone to future fatigue and breakage as can occur with some other cruciate ligament repair techniques. Loki has been such a trooper during both procedures and is recovering well. We captured this photo of him during his stay with us. He was the goodest boy!

25.01.2022 Meet Coco the 8 month old Puppy! Coco presented to Baldivis Vets covered in raised bumps known as Hives. Cocos owners came home to find her covered in them and brought her to the vet straight away. Her eyes were swollen and she was covered in bumps around her face, chest and back. Poor Coco. ... What are Hives? Urticaria or Hives is a skin condition characterised by raised red skin welts caused by an allergy reaction. What causes Hives? Insect Bites Grass / Plant Reaction Chemical Reaction Food Allergies How to treat Hives? Animals skin can get incredibly itchy and swollen so the best thing to do is bring your animal straight into the Vet. While transporting you could place a nice cold cloth or towel to help soothe your animals skin. Vets will usually treat Hives with antihistamines via injectable form (Histamil & Dexamethasone) injections to counteract the allergy. As the weather starts warming you will notice your dogs and cats allergies and skin conditions start to flare! 25.01.2022 We had some cuties here today. Our scrub pockets can also be used as little kitten pouches . Our nurses were able to cuddle and feed 2 week old bundles of joy today. Unfortunately, these babies were separated from their mother so need regular feeding and toileting every 2 hours from our Veterinary Nurses. ... If you see a stray cat and kittens try and safely catch them all together, never separate kittens from mothers. Being with mum gives them a better chance at survival when being so young. Mothers milk has natural antibodies that boost immunity and fight disease. 24.01.2022 We have some great news . Thunder our patient who had been caught in the middle of a home invasion is now home and getting very spoilt. Thunder had been rushed into Baldivis Vet Hospital after receiving a knife wound to the shoulder. He needed an emergency surgery to stop the bleeding from a major vessel that was lacerated, and repair the knife wound. ... Due to severe nerve damage, blood loss and shock Thunder required 24/7 supportive care. There was significant risk of amputation being required, but due to the efforts of Baldivis Vet Hospitals dedicated Vets and Nurses and of course, Thunder himself we were able to rehabilitate his nerve damage and save Thunders leg. HUGE Thank you to everyone who supported Thunder. He is progressing well and is expected to make a full recovery.

Diego now has a bestest friend in Bambi the 3.5 month old baby lamb. At just 2 weeks of age, Bambi was brought into Baldivis Vets as a stray & Nurse Danielle took him on and welcomed him to her family and fed him every few hours just like a m...umma would! He straight away got attached to Diego and they have been inseparable brothers ever since! Sahhhhh Cute! Do you have any unusual fur friends who have that inseparable bond ? 21.01.2022 Meet LEO the 9 week old puppy, our happy little Sunflower! Unfortunately, Leo had a bad fall off his bed and fractured his little tibia. Due to Leo's age, the nature of healing in puppies and location of the fracture surgery was not required. ... Instead, Leo has to be confined to strict crate rest and regular bandages with a splint to support the healing process. He has been the bravest puppy ever and despite his discomfort is always smiling.

19.01.2022 The weather is warming, flowers are blooming and spring is in the air! Our snake friends are starting to become more active as they slither out of hibernation to enjoy the sunshine. We have already started to see Dogs & Cats rushed into the animal hospital presenting with symptoms of Snake Bites. ... What can you do to prevent attracting Snakes on your property? Keep your property free from rubbish piles. Keep your grass/paddock areas cut short. Pick up dog/cat food bowls from outside. Keep your property free from objects snakes may like to hide in. Keep your dogs on lead around bushland/swamp areas. Recognising the signs of Snake Bite In Dogs & Cats: A dogs/cats reaction, signs or symptoms from being bitten by a snake can vary and may not appear clinically significant for up to 24 hours after the bite occurs. Therefore, it can be difficult to know if your dog/cat has been the victim of a snake bite. Its important that you act on any suspicions, if your dog or cat has been in contact with a snake please do not hesitate & bring them to the Vet immediately. Please always call your Vet when youre on the way so the team can prepare for your arrival. Every second counts. Signs of Snake Bite: Sudden collapse followed by apparent recovery Lethargy Muscle tremors, shaking and reduced eye blinking Dilated pupils Sudden onset of weakness/wobbliness/shaking at the limbs Complete paralysis Sudden loss of bladder and bowels Irregular bleeding from the nose, bite site, mouth Discoloured, dark, bloody urine What Can You Do? 19.01.2022 The overnight staff at this hospital were absolutely amazing. I had to bring my dog into emergency in the early hours of the morning today as he had a pretty bad seizure. Money was a bit tight as this was an unexpected emergency, but they only charged me for the blood tests and consultation - kept him for the morning, gave him medication and didnt charge me an arm and a leg. Were so lucky to have such a great emergency vet in the area thats open 24/7! Thank you! .... Robinson Family.

18.01.2022 We had the cutest most adorable pet Mice cuddles today. Did you know? There are more than 30 known species of Mice. ... Mice are excellent climbers, jumpers and swimmers. They can jump a foot into the air. Making them the best little animal gymnasts. Mice can squeeze through openings as small as a 5 cent coin. Despite being teeny tiny, mice eat between 20 and 40 times per day. Mice as Pets! Mice are gentle in nature and love exploring. Theyre easily occupied, even a simple toilet roll that they can weave in and out of provides hours of entertainment for them. They do not take up much room, however, are renowned for being great escape artists. You should always they have a secure enclosure for them. Mice love a variety of foods which includes: ad lib fresh fruits and vegetables (apples, pears, banana, melons, stone fruits, citrus fruits, broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts, endive, carrots, bok choy/other Asian greens, celery, parsley, berries, tomato, fresh corn, beans, peas) and small amounts of good quality mouse/rat pellets or cubes.

17.01.2022 August is Dental Awareness Month! Holly is a mischievous, 7 year old, American Staffy who went on a late night backyard adventure that lead to her upper left canine tooth being mysteriously torn from its socket, completely intact. This is no easy feat! As you can see from the image below of an extracted canine, the canine (fang) tooth of cats and dogs is a very large rooted tooth. ... In fact 70% of all healthy teeth including the root is actually situated below the gum line and is not visible or able to be thoroughly examined without the aid of dental x-rays. The canine tooth in particular has a very a strong attachment to the surrounding bone and can be extremely difficult to surgically extract, therefore it is alarming that Hollys tooth was so easily torn from its socket! Hollys mum sought urgent veterinary advice the following day from our dental vet Dr Rebecca. As Holly had been showing signs of dental disease including halitosis (bad breath) and gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) prior to the injury and her tooth had detached so easily in one piece, it was important to rule out any significant underlying causes. The recommendation from Dr Rebecca was that Holly should have a COHAT (Complete Oral Health Assessment and Treatment) including a set of full mouth x-rays, oral examination and scale and polish to address any pre-existing dental disease and to determine if the main cause was periodontal disease, major trauma or something more sinister. That same day, Holly underwent a general anaesthetic and dental COHAT. Hollys dental x-rays showed early signs of periodontal disease such as some minor tooth root resorption which may explain the loss of tooth. To be extra thorough Hollys mum also opted to send off a small biopsy of inflamed tissue and bone surrounding the site of the detached tooth to rule out malignant changes (these results came back clear). Due to the early signs of tooth root resorption and the unexpected loss of Hollys upper left canine tooth, her upper right canine tooth was extracted whilst under anaesthetic and the rest of the teeth and gums were thoroughly cleaned. Both the empty socket and the fresh extraction site were cleaned and sutured closed with dissolvable stitches to ensure that the sites did not become impacted with food or other fibres which could lead to significant infection. Holly went home with pain relief, antibiotics and a fresh new smile. Her gums have since healed well and her bad breath has resolved, her biggest issue now is how to get mum to stop kissing her We are still offering FREE Dental Nurse consults for the month of August and we have discounts off Royal Canin and Hills Pet Nutrition dental foods. 17.01.2022 Our little Mochi had a 7 night stay due to illness. The staff from beginning to end were just brilliant. They were all so professional, caring and very supportive during our ordeal. Such a comfort to know our tiny pup was in such good hands. Thanks to them our Mochi is now home recovering. We will be back for all her needs, wouldnt consider going anywhere else. Brown family. 16.01.2022 How cute is our patient of the day! ADORABLE. Meet MR GREEN the 5 week old Cocker Spaniel X Cavoodle. Mr Green came into stay with us for a few days as he wasn't feeling like himself. ... He was a little bit.. ummm how do we say this... constipated. So he needed some help to feel a little bit more comfortable. Mr Green is now back at home with his other siblings being his happy, puppy self! He got lots of cuddles from all the staff, especially Veterinary Nurse Jenielle and was just the bravest little boy.

16.01.2022 Baby Birds! What to do next... We have had quite a few calls lately regarding what to do if you find a baby bird! We know how hard it can be too leave a baby bird on it's own but sometimes taking it away from a mother or father that are keeping a close eye on it can do more harm then it needs to be, resulting in some birds not being able to return to their natural habitat and growing up in captivity. Our wonderful friends at River Wren Rescue have provided some information on what to do if you find a baby bird away from it's nest.

10.01.2022 We got in a little lost ducky friend over night and this little one has imprinted onto our wonderful Dr Jamie our emergency Veterinarian. It's the cutest thing we have ever seen. Dr Jamie made sure he was comfortable all night and he is now with a lovely registered wildlife carer with some other ducky friends.

06.01.2022 Meet ANASTASIA also known as ANA the 6 month old Siberian Husky. Ana was so, so brave for her sterilisation procedure and got lots of cuddles from our Nurses. Especially, Veterinary Nurse Jake who couldnt resist a cuddle before starting his emergency team shift. ... Did you know? Siberian Huskies are most probably best-known for their incredible sled-pulling skills, but these doggies arent all business! They make excellent working dogs & were originally bred to help the Chukchi people of Siberia hunt more efficiently. They also have an incredibly adorable side too, theyre seriously sweet, friendly, and loyal cuddle bugs! Theyre in the top ten most ancient dog breed in the world. With their wolf-like appearance, it;s not uncomon for them to have Heterochromia (bi-coloured eyes). There curious personality makes them very efficient escape artists. Huskies can run for hours upon hours, without food, and without using their bodies glycogen (carbohydrates) or fat stores. How do they burn so many calories without using their reserves? They regulate their metabolisms for performance. Two of the most famous sled dogs were "Togo" and "Bolto" who were part Siberian Husky and known for their bravery transporting medical supplies for "The Nome Syrup Run" (era 1925) saving heaps of lives.

04.01.2022 Little MACEE the 1 year old Bull Terrier has got winter fashion down pact. What a beauty! She came to see Dr Teryn because she has sore eyes and was diagnosed with conjunctivitis. Poor little Macee. She was so brave in her examination & now has some antibiotics her for eyes which should make her feel better very soon.

03.01.2022 Baldivis Vet Hospital is a Cat Friendly Practice. We love our feline friends and know it can be very stressful for them to visit the animal hospital. Therefore, to make it as comfortable for our cat friends as possible,... we have a cat ONLY consultation room (NO DOGS are allowed to enter) where they can be outside of their cat carriers to explore the room. It has a Feliway diffuser in the room to ensure a calming sensation while they wait for their consultation. Our consultation room comes with a cat scratcher to play on & cat toys to play with. Our lovely patient "Taliyah" 5 month old Birman enjoyed exploring in our cat consultation room. Isnt she a beauty

The team saved her life and Dottie was able to go back to her pups who were very happy to see their mummy.... I can’t thank you enough, the thought of losing out beautiful girl broke our hearts and we are absolutely overjoyed that she is healthy and doing well. Thank you so so much ". Roberts family. Time is of essence in critical cases like snake bites! It is extremely important to seek veterinary care if you suspect your pet has been near a snake. Luckily for Dottie, her mum's quick response time saved her life.

01.01.2022 It's not everyday we get a visit from Baaaaaaaaaa-MBI. You may notice Bambi in one of our yards as you walk up the path to reception. Bambi is always hanging out with his best friend Diego the Dalmation. Veterinary Nurse Danielle reared Bambi since a lamb. Bambi had fallen off a truck and was rushed into Baldivis Vets and he has stayed here ever since. ... He recently had a hair cut at the "baa-baa shop" and simply looks fabulous. He is such a character and loves to try and eat all our doggy treats, he knows all the hidey spots for them on reception. Don't forget to say hello to Bambi next time you walk past his pen. He knows his name so well and will often come running up to the fence to say hello.
