23.01.2022 STUDY SAMURAI LIBRARY TIP FOR MID November These proven activities increase your wellbeing and happiness levels: Meditate... Studies show that in the minutes right after meditating we experience feelings of calm and contentment as well as heightened awareness and empathy. Also research has shown that regular meditation can permanently rewire the brain to raise levels of happiness, lower stress and improve immune function. Look forward to something Studies found that people who just thought about watching their favourite movie actually raised their endorphin levels by 27%. Often, the most enjoyable part of an activity is the anticipation. Be sure to have positive activities planned and scheduled. Infuse Positivity Your physical environment can have an enormous impact on your mindset and sense of wellbeing. You may not have complete control of your surroundings, but you can make specific efforts to infuse them with positivity. Photos of loved ones around your room is an example. Making time to go outside on a nice day also delivers a huge advantage; one study found that spending 20 minutes outside in good weather not only boosted positive mood, but broadened thinking and improved working memory. Exercise The benefits of exercise are: 1) Boosting mood and enhancing work performance. 2) Improving motivation and feelings of mastery. 3) Reducing stress and anxiety. 4) Helping you get into that state of flow. Students and parents can access Study Samurai via student's Canvas Year Group pages.

19.01.2022 On Thursday 26th of November, our school Captain Jannie Nel and Vice Captain Carlos Jorges had the opportunity to participate in the Young Ambassador Program for the afternoon; a program which involved leaders from both private and public high schools in the Northern Beaches and Mosman Council in an attempt to raise awareness and collaborate with other school leaders about local community issues and potential solutions. They also had the privilege of meeting our local parliament representative Zali Steggall who aims to give young leaders an independent voice to create real change within their schools and local communities. We look forward to working alongside our community to develop and implement these programs at Bally.

19.01.2022 STUDY SAMURAI LIBRARY TIP FOR NOVEMBER When a student says that they have a bad memory, it usually means that actually they do not encode the information they are trying to remember into their memory in an effective way. Memory is really a ‘process’ as opposed to a ‘thing’ in your head that you are born with. Rather than ‘improving your memory’, you want to improve the process of memory creation to ensure memory retrieval goes smoothly! The reason why many students do not ret...ain what they are learning is that the way they study only gets the information as far as their short term memory, and then before long it is forgotten instead of being encoded into long term memory. The first stage for students in improving their retention of information is to try and find ways to make what they are learning INTERESTING to themselves, EMOTIONAL, ENJOYABLE and if they can't do this then at least create the firm INTENTION to remember the information. It is all about their approach to what they are learning. The next step in memory creation is the encoding process. To improve in this area, students need to improve: - CONCENTRATION AND FOCUS (making notes about what they are learning, studying using techniques that suit their learning style, studying when they are most alert) - ORGANISATION OF MATERIAL (making brain friendly notes: lists, highlighting, categories, grouping, graphics) - MAKING ASSOCIATIONS AND LINKS between the new material and previously learned material. Next stage in the memory process is facilitating the storage of memories. Students can improve the way memories are stored by ensuring they BREAK THEIR STUDY BLOCKS UP with at least a few minutes break every half hour (giving the brain a chance to encode and file that chunk of content) and CHUNK DOWN the information to be learnt into manageable chunks. Getting enough SLEEP is also essential as fundamental memory processes take place during sleep. The other thing that is really important in this stage is REPETITION AND REGULAR REVIEW. Each time a review takes place the brain fires all the neurons connected to that memory and the more often that happens the stronger the connections between the neurons and the more intense and powerful the memory that is created. So in summary, the top three things to improve the process of creating powerful memories are: i) focus, positive attitude and intention to remember are essential (reading something halfheartedly while bored pretty much guarantees it won’t be retained) ii) an active approach to learning where students are ‘doing’ (making notes, testing themselves using a wide range of study techniques) rather than just ‘reading’ iii) repetition and constant review of the material over a period of time. To learn more about the brain and memory and advanced memory techniques visit Study Samurai via student's Canvas year group pages

13.01.2022 Yesterday, four of our prefects attended a volunteer beach clean up event at Dee Why Beach ran by a local organisation called Northern Beaches Clean Up Crew. They spent an hour in the extremely hot and windy conditions, walking through the reeds on the edge of the lagoon with the other volunteers and event organisers finding and collecting rubbish buried deep within the bush around the area. The boys enjoyed the experience, being able to help the local community and environme...nt and proudly represent Balgowlah Boys but were disturbed and had their eyes opened by the vast amounts of pollution they encountered and their inability to collect it all in the time allocated, witnessing first-hand the damaging effects plastic and other harmful human-made materials have on the natural environment. Due to COVID restrictions the event was capped at 30 people, which unfortunately meant we could not have invited more students to attend, however, we look forward to inviting more people to events like this in the future when these restrictions ease in the hope of helping the local community and environment and making Bally a more environmentally-conscious school.
