22.01.2022 Mendut Temple and Gardens is an ancient Buddhist temple located about 3 km east of Borobudur and 36 km from Yogyakarta in the town of Muntilan, Central Java. This 9th century Buddhist temple was built in 824 A.D. which means it is even older than the world-famous Borobudur. It is traditionally used as part of a pilgrimage before visiting Borobudur temple. The temple is made from the dark grey andesite stone, which originates from igneous/volcanic rock. It is a cubic single to...wer structure standing on a 2-metre high square base and rising about 26 metres above ground. The outer walls of the building are adorned with reliefs of Buddha, Buddhist divinities and local folklore. A main staircase leads up to the main hall consisting of two chambers, the larger one housing three beautifully carved statues of the Buddha. The open space gardens compliment the temple providing a balance between built and landscape elements. The Bayan Tree also features prominently in the background like it is nurturing the site. Overall, the setting and experience promotes a feeling of calmness. It is a beautiful place to visit! See more

19.01.2022 The Bali Orchid Garden consists of approximately one hectare of tropical plants and orchids. It lies 10 minutes north of Sanur in the nursery and horticultural product supply district. So a visit to the Orchid Garden can easily include visiting nearby nurseries and garden crafts such as pots, statues, stonework, timber features, etc. The Gardens are open daily between 8am and 6pm. A friendly guide will escort you and provide information about the plants and help you discover... many orchid surprises Botanically, the guide is adverse with species and growing requirements. So, it a pleasure to interact with someone with a degree of technical experience and the guide is very happy to provide guidance for growing orchids back home. There is a small shop where one can purchase baby orchids in flasks to take home. The process is approved through quarantine as you are provided with a certificate of plant health assurance and a permit to take the plant home. We visited the gardens in December in the wet season whilst not perfect timing, the volume of material in flower combined with the displays of texture and colour contrasts from foliage displays was enough to provide many surprises. The entry fee is 100,000 rupiah per person. It takes about 30-60 minutes to walk around, however, this largely depends on your love of gardening (not just orchids). The visit was a peaceful, enjoyable, relaxing experience that offers to share knowledge and experience to those that ask questions. Lastly, take your camera.

14.01.2022 Plants in the Landscape The Banyan Tree The Banyan Tree (Ficus benghalensis) is a very large spreading strangler fig. It is a native of India. It grows from seeds that land on other trees and then sends roots down to the ground smothering its hosts. It then grows into stout, branch-like pillars that resemble new tree trunks. After a short time, one understands Hindu texts that describe the plant as a ‘cosmic ‘world tree’ having it’s roots in the heavens and trunk and branc...hes extended to the earth. It is often referred to as the tree of immortality with the long aerial roots hanging down to the soil like a curtain thus starting another part of the tree. The tree also produces vast crops of fig fruit that sustain many species of birds, fruit bats and other creatures, which in turn also disperse the seed of the tree. Its leaf, bark, seeds and fruit are also are used for the variety of medicinal treatments. In Bali, the Banyan provides shade and protection from the elements so it is often utilised as a meeting place. Its trunk is often decorated with black and white checked sarongs, and a shrine is built within the tree, where offerings are placed regularly. 14.01.2022 The Botanic Gardens in Bali are known as ‘Kebun Raya Eka Karya Bedugul.' The gardens are the largest botanic garden in Indonesia and are located in Bedugul, central Bali, around 90 minutes drive north of Denpasar. The area is mountainous, nicely cool and a special place to relax whilst meandering through many hectares of different garden types that typically show various traditional uses of tropical plants by the Balinese people. One such garden is the Orchid Garden set in controlled climatic glasshouses with orchid collections from all over Eastern Indonesia.

10.01.2022 Tirtha Gannga, Kings Water Garden, Karangasem, Bali. A beautiful garden park with an enormous tall fountain built by the late king of Karangasem. The land has a well-spring, oozing out of hillside believed to be a bath place for God. The most amazing thing for me was the fresh invigorating quality of the water. It was cool but mineral fresh. One of the best swims I have ever experienced. Sitting in the background was an ancient Banyan Tree with a curtain of aerial roots forming a watchtower over the pools and gardens.

02.01.2022 Outdoor wash basin Simple things have a way of blending in. This simple wash basin constructed of natural volcanic stone and bamboo is all that's needed to wash down after a day in the garden. (Green School, Bali)
