19.01.2022 Unfortunately, the 2020 Balingup Medieval Carnivale was cancelled this year due to COVID. But it’s fabulous to see some of the Medieval characters adorn the Sou...th West Hwy in Balingup this week to mark the fourth weekend of August. The Balingup Medieval Carnivale evolved from a half day event 1996, to an amazing annual weekend event full of medieval colour, stunning costumes, and family fun not to be missed. We’ll see you all in 2021 for the Balingup Medieval Carnivale!

17.01.2022 As featured on ABC Radio this week... Have you ever heard of, been to or lived in Balingup? Let us take you there Your State Library is featuring WA regional t...owns on its Facebook Page. It's an opportunity to share stories, photos and connect with old friends. Recently featured Tom Price, Paraburdoo, Busselton, Mandurah, Wittenoom and Kalgoorlie. Balingup is a located 241 kilometres south of Perth in the Gnaala Karla Booja region. Aboriginal people have lived in the area for many thousands of years. The town takes its name from Balingup Pool, located on the Balingup Brook which flows through the town. The name is said to have derived from the name of Noongar warrior Balingan, or to mean "one that is situated there at this place". The Balingup District was first settled by Europeans in 1854 when Richard Jones took up 10 acres, built a mud brick homestead and named it Southampton. Sadly the historic homestead was lost in a bush fire in 2013. A school opened in 1885 with 15 students. The town was gazetted in 1898 and in the same year the railway station was opened. In 1905 The Balingup Racetrack was built, the winning post being a black stump on the edge of the track. A year later the first race meeting was held and the Balingup Cup and 20 prize money won by the horse Floanda. An Agricultural Hall was built in 1898, providing a much needed meeting place and social venue for gatherings and events, including the first show organised by the local Agricultural Society in 1909. In 1930 a new hall was built adjoining the old one and a celebratory ball was held. The ‘handsome hall’ (West Australian 10 May 1930) continues to provide a social facility for the local community today. After World War 1, the Government acquired the Brooklands estate, subdivided it into 130 acre (54ha) blocks and sold it to returned servicemen. The oak-lined avenue of honour in the town is a tribute to those who lost their lives in World War I. Balingup went on to became a thriving farming community in boasting its own cheese factory and stock and station store. Today beef cattle and market gardens producing a wide variety of vegetables occupy the fertile valleys and slopes, alongside vineyards and orchards protected by native forests and tree plantations. Tourism is also becoming an increasingly important industry for the Balingup district with festivals and events including the Medieval Fayre, drawing thousands of visitors to the area each year. The Bibbulmum Track also runs through Balingup town.
