06.01.2022 RACE RESULTS. Ballarat Yacht Club 31/10/2020 Race 9 and 10 Saturday saw a constant wind from the south south east at 28 to 34 Km/hr and tested everybody and made for great sailing. The juniors experienced some hard sailing some capsizes in junior as well as senior classes but the racing at times was exhilarating for the skippers as well a great spectacle for the observers. The boats as they rounded the first mark were shielded by the bay and the Yacht club building, but comi...ng out of that protection went away at great speed the lasers and the miscellaneous craft planing out of the water. It would have been exhilarating for all boats especially Peter Flynn with his new acquisition Mal’s Paper tiger and Bryce Reid’s Contender. All would have experienced some frantic times. It’s interesting to see juniors, Ben lodge, Cooper Brown, Alex Hughes starting to make their skills felt in the Lasers, lots of competition now in that class. Although there were some DNF’s and a broken mast in the Juniors they all tried hard , Adam Scivilla took the Club laser 4.7 out and did a great job by taking out race 9 which with the wind speed was a great achievement, well done Adam . Lachlan Bellete came in second in Race 9 and first in Race 10 so watch these juniors improve. 04.01.2022 Ballarat Yacht Club Races 11 and 12 of the spring pennant 14/11/2020 Saturday saw a fine day with again a great turnout of boats with moderate winds 14km/hr gusting to 20 coming in from the west later on from the West North West. These lighter winds test the capability of all sailors especially when the odd gusts come and you don’t read the water ahead. The seniors this week had a good tussle with juniors sharing the spoils. What was great to see today was two sets of brother...s and one of our junior girls returning. Great to see Jacobi Dunn back on the water partnering with Ryan Harbour after sustaining a broken forearm ( Not In Sailing).and it was a good tussle between the Coelho and Bellette brothers. Have to check the History files to see if thishas happened before. More fun ahead I bet. All in good day of sailing. 03.01.2022 REMEMBERANCE DAY

02.01.2022 Angelique Coelho captured these photos of the Juniors in their close racing on Saturday.

02.01.2022 The Lawn, Lake Wendouree 1887 Lake Wendouree, the modern name of Yuille's Swamp, very truly indicates by its name the transformation which has come over that sc...ene of one time alternate swamp and mud or dust hollow. By conserving the water and pouring in additions from catchwater drains and overflow from the forest reservoirs, a permanent lake has been created, which has for some years now been the great home of local aquatic sports and pleasure taking. It is the only inland water resorted to for aquatic contests of any note, and the beauty of its shores, the safe depths of its water, and the large fleet of steam, sailing, and rowing boats at all times available, have made the lake the favorite trysting place not only of boating people but, during the summer season, of picnic parties from nearly all parts of the colony. Since the early sixties, when Bob McLaren and Ned Williams led the way in boating, or Town-clerk Combe and Town-surveyor Baird pushed out in a flat bottomed punt through the masses of reeds that then covered the "swamp", the changes effected there have been many and great. To-day the visitor sees a nearly cleared sheet of some 300 acres of water, jetties, boathouses, yachts, and boats in profusion, and a fine fleet of steam pleasure boats plying from shore to shore at fares within the reach of all kinds of pleasure seekers. The City Council, with wise sagacity, has done much to improve the shores, and the walks round the well-planted borders are now among the pleasantest resorts of the pedestrian, who always has, as a permanent, strong attraction to healthful exercise, the botanic gardens as the western margin of the lake, and on the lake itself a host of vessels going hither and thither as may suit the fancy of private parties or the routine of the steam companies and others plying for regular traffic. The Ballarat Yacht Club was formed at a meeting held at Gill's Lake View Hotel, on the 29th May, 1877. Extract above is from: The History of Ballarat, from the First Pastoral Settlement to the Present Time. Author: William Bramwell Withers. Published by F. W Niven. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Image: The Lawn - Lake Wendouree 1887. Francis Wilson Niven (1831 - 1905) Niven was a lithographic printer and mariner. At the age of 13 he went to sea and was apprenticed to John Sargent, captain of the Stebonheath. After prospecting with limited success, Niven decided upon the occupation of printing, specifically lithography, because it suited the artistic disposition he had inherited from his father. He purchased presses for 40 from Alfred Ronalds, a nurseryman at Ballarat who had formerly been a lithographer at Geelong. Niven taught himself to use this equipment with the aid of Ure’s Dictionary of Arts. His first known commercial work was assisting with illustrations on Ballarat Punch in 1857. In the 1860s he trained with the lithographic artist Hermann Deutsch in his Bridge Road office. They produced many prints of Ballarat scenes. Between 1863 and 1865 Deutsch sold him the business. Innovation in lithography was a significant part of the firm’s success and in 1873 Niven imported one of the earliest known commercial steam lithographic presses in Australia. F. W. Niven & Co. became a large printing business and at its peak employing seventy hands and having some 7000 worth of machinery.
