25.01.2022 Thank you Sensei Trent Rice of the Ballarat Dojo in Main Road for helping our club out when our normal venue is closed. A limit of ten with no contact made for ...an interesting training thanks to Sensei Tarl O’Mara. Russell Trainor of Trainor Taekwondo also offered his dojang to us so it’s good to see friendships amongst Ballarat’s martial arts community coming to the fore during difficult times. See more

25.01.2022 Our thanks to the MElbourne University Kendo Club for last Saturday's seminar. We had over 90 attendees who benefitted greatly from presenters Jeong Sensei, Yano Sensei, Kim Sensei, and Jang Sensei. Apart from Australia there were Kendo Ka from South Korea and Singapore who joined in. An insightful activity during these difficult times.

25.01.2022 You are never too old to take up the Sword! Training will be back on the floor at Eastwood Leisure Centre soon.

24.01.2022 Here’s a thought.

24.01.2022 Some screenshots from the WIN TV article in 1991. Seen here are presenter and friend Glenn Driscoll Glenn, the Oliver family with Bob Cartledge, and a young Anthony Pickering and Dr Vince Russell. The late John Butler is briefly spotted watching from the back. A great event for a fledgling club!

23.01.2022 Australian Kendo Championships 2015 - it was the 40th AKCs and held in Melbourne. A highlight of the Veterans was Ballarat's Carl Ruff against Toshio Nishimoto. Both fought in the nito style (two swords). Toshio won 1- 0.

23.01.2022 Draws are up for this years Taikai

22.01.2022 Beginners course will start on the 9th of May for 10 weeks. Please email [email protected] for more details

22.01.2022 In 1987 Melbourne's Mark Wild visited newly formed Ballarat Kendo Club. Very few people supported this fledgling group but Mark was there. Yesterday at the VKCs I met up with Mark after many years. Good to see you again mate! sorry about the cameraman!

22.01.2022 Similar Sensei visited Ballarat thanks to Brent Gazanigga Sensei. He is a truly great Kendo teacher.

22.01.2022 Check out this great post from Kimura Sensei https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BzziVj7DZtg&feature=youtu.be

21.01.2022 A great meeting with martial arts leaders in Ballarat today L - R: Peter Volke, Gary Oliver, Damien Martin, Hannah Thornton, Trent Rice & Mark Azzopardi.

21.01.2022 Its that time again; Victorian Kendo Championships! We wish all Ballarat competitors the best of fortune in tomorrow's taikai. Focus on doing your best Kendo not victory or defeat. Those needing a lift meet at the club carpark at 7.15 a.m. - Gary

21.01.2022 Great training tonight. Jason Widdy on the floor for Jodo and Shaun Hearn for Kendo. Makes us all feel good!

20.01.2022 In 1997 I was privileged to spend a day with Hanshi Kinjo Hiroshi. Hiroshi Sensei was uniquely placed to help us traverse the void from the old budo world to the modern.

20.01.2022 Vale Ruth Franklyn. A dedicated Budo ka who will be sadly missed by The Australian Iaido community.

20.01.2022 Our own Matt Norman has just won a section of the United Nations Associations film awards for W.A. Check it out here https://youtu.be/UkDyynyu51k. Well done Matt!

20.01.2022 UPDATE: This course has been postponed and will not be going ahead on august 6th due to the new restrictions. Ballarat Kendo Club will be running a beginners course from August 6th 5:30 - 6:30 pm. The course will be 8 weeks. We are currently practicing at the Ballarat dojo on Main rd, Canadian.... Ballarat Kendo Club is a non for profit traditional martial art club that supports our local community and for that reason We have decided that this course will be free for anyone who wishes to join however because of social distancing restrictions this will be limited to 10 students. Please email [email protected] if interested.

19.01.2022 Calling all interested in the martial art of kendo. An absolute beginners course starting from scratch, all equipment provided and you need no level of fitness to get started. Kendo is great for building confidence, mindfulness, self discipline, coordination and it’s a good social atmosphere to boot. Our course leader for the first week is Cass O’Mara, kendo third dan. She would especially love to have more women join in for this round, we have two signed up already! The best... thing is your first class is absolutely free and if you miss the first class you can pick it up on Thursday 23rd. Come give it a try! Please note, this is an adult & teens beginner course. A new children’s course will be released in the upcoming weeks. Just to recap: Where: Eastwood St Leisure Complex When: Thursday 16th May How: Register your interest by emailing [email protected] with your name and contact number. What to wear? Loose clothing such as t-shirt and tracksuit pants What to bring: bottle of water and an open mind

19.01.2022 Today's Ballarat Courier article on our own "Tarl O'Mero"! Still feeling good after a working week!

18.01.2022 Dear Ballarat kendo club members, All classes tonight have been cancelled. Please look for updates in your email regarding Thursday and the following weeks. We are sorry for any inconvenience. Regards,... Tarl

18.01.2022 Vale John Taylor (MBK). John passed away last Friday after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. He was a true friend of many of our Club’s older members. Seen here with our late Sensei, Kyoshi Sumitaka Nagae. R.I.P mate.

17.01.2022 Great work today by Ballarat members at the Victorian Kendo Championships. Marc Veenstra achieved 3rd place in the Men’s Kyu Individual.

16.01.2022 Is anyone interested in a video group for past/present members plus anyone interested in everything Kendo, Iaido and Jodo. Just remember that while some members might have families others are alone and may not get to chat with friends If interested please fill out the polls on what meeting program, time and amount times a week (cant make a poll so just state what video meeting program and times)... Thank Jason

16.01.2022 Dan West again sent a WIN TV video to me today. For some reason the tv staton sends these Kendo articles to his Karate club by mistake. This was in the mid 90s and again featured our friend Sensei Katsumi Kuramochi. Thankyou WIN Tv and Dan West. With Katsumi Kuramochi

16.01.2022 UPDATE: The beginners course has been postponed and will not be going ahead on august 6th due to the new restrictions.

16.01.2022 Walter joined me in doing a short Kendo demonstration for the Kununurra Taekwondo Club on our last night in the town. We were hosted by the Butler Family for a night out which topped off a great catch up. Given Walter’s time away from a Kendo Club he did very well!

15.01.2022 On Sunday, our dojo was interviewed by Japanese media. The video at that time was broadcast today.

15.01.2022 The Eastwood Leisure Complex committee of Management has directed us to delay our resumption of training from this week until August 3rd. The reason stated is that we are listed as a "contact sport". Despite our assurances that we have planned to train in non contact aspects of our discipline they wish to stand by their directive. This is frustrating but we are getting closer to a return. Please keep up your suburi and general fitness level until a positive notification of our starting date is posted. Gambatte!

15.01.2022 Thankyou Yehuda and Nishimoto Sensei for a great training this morning in the Top End. Can't imagine Kendo in the Wet season! Domo arigato gozaimashita.

14.01.2022 Our final training for the year tonight included our Battlefield Taikai. it came down to Oliver vs Oliver with Ryan winning 2-1. The perpetual trophy (donated to the club by Sensei tony Pickering) was presented to Ryan by last year's winner, Cass O'Mara. We were all thrilled to have Jason Widdy attend the training as an observer. From six weeks in a coma and on death's door to his amazing recovery so far is truly inspirational. Thank you Jason and thank you everyone for making this club such a special one.

14.01.2022 A great opportunity to experience other disciplines. Budo is a book and if you only experience one discipline you only read one page.

14.01.2022 Some old footage of Kendo. Note the one handed strikes. Thank you Neil Horton.

14.01.2022 Great news today at the Kyu gradings at the Kenshikan all Ballarat candidates passed so that's 100 percent over all opportunities this year! Congratulations Tim, Raine, Leo, Andrew, Braden & Jack!

13.01.2022 A great final with Tarl O’Mara (Ballarat Kendo Club) 1st and Ryan Oliver (Ballarat Kendo Club) second.

13.01.2022 Get that feeling!

12.01.2022 A bunch of us participated in Ballarat Kendo Club's 30th anniversary taikai yesterday! Great results and performance from all competitors! Congratulations to To...m "Miguk" Mendelovits for coming in 1st, Takeshi Hartono 2nd, and Julie Tran for achieving the fighting spirit award! Thank you Ballarat kendo club for organising this wonderful event and sharing a part of your history with us!

12.01.2022 2020 has made gradings and progress difficult for all of us. Heres a flashback to happier times.

12.01.2022 It’s time to pick up our shinai with purpose and commitment once again. Will we see you at the Ballarat Dojo on Main road this Thursday? Contact Brett as we have limited places!

12.01.2022 Breaking news...almost. Ballarat’s Tarl O’Mara and Cassie O’Mara did great things at Kendo’s inaugural entry into Australia’s Masters Games. Well done guys and well said Cass.

12.01.2022 Suzuki San just sent me this selfie of himself and Yuda San. Mr Yuda hosted David, Tarl, Ryan & Walter for a week during our first Kendo Tournament in Inagawa Cho in 2003. Two great supporters of Ballarat Kendo Club.

12.01.2022 Dan West from Ballarat sent this video from WIN TV. I think it must have been around 1993. Thank you Dan West

11.01.2022 Four weeks to go til this years Ballarat Taikai. spread the word and see you there!

11.01.2022 Worth remembering.

11.01.2022 A great training in Cairns last night with Ballarat’s good friend, Sensei Katsumi Kuramochi. Sensei took training for four years in Ballarat before heading north to a warmer climate. he also introduced Jodo for the first time in Aus while in Ballarat.

10.01.2022 How do you all store your gear when not training? It’s always better to have your bogu out of a bag.

10.01.2022 In 1999 Ballarat won the State Kyu Team Taikai and went on the following year to win back to back championships in this event. Last weekend we caught up with Peter Leed who was part of those teams back in the day. the good news is he is back training in Melbourne with Fudoshin Kendo Club. Once it’s in your blood........!

09.01.2022 It’s on every year at the Meiji Shrine. This is a taste.

08.01.2022 I caught up with Walter Butler ( Kendo Shodan, Taekwon do 2nd Dun) this week in Kununurra W.A. Walter was in our first Club visit to Japan.

08.01.2022 No weight or height divisions in Kendo; the sword is the equaliser. 2015 Victorian Kendo Championships with Lockie Webb against Nick Evans. Who won this one Webbie? Photos courtesy Paul Bserani

06.01.2022 A great day of Iaido today with Melbourne colleague and friend Sensei Marcus Lee-Steere. Thankyou Marcus, a very insightful and challenging day!

05.01.2022 Our condolences to Sensei Arpad Maksay and family on the passing of his mother, Lakshmi. This highly intelligent, insightful and caring lady was a great friend of our Ballarat club. R.l.P.

05.01.2022 I've been asked to be a volunteer presenter at this year's "Fight for Life" seminar organised by my friend Sensei Kevin Walsh. All proceeds go towards Cancer research. There are some great Martial Arts workshops on the day. Check out their webpage.

05.01.2022 A flash back to 1999 and the VKR Individual State Taikai (we ran individual and team competitions on separate days sometimes weeks apart). First place in the open Dan was Satoru Takada (Ballarat). Third place in the kyu competition was Tarl O'Mara. Fighting spirit to Ryan Oliver. A good year for Ballarat!

04.01.2022 It’s been a long trip but we are back as of today. See you all on the floor this week! Gary

04.01.2022 Some highlights of the Dan Finals at the 2019 Ballarat Kendo Taikai

03.01.2022 Its been a while since the 1999 National Kendo Taikai in QLD when Ryan won the Junior championship.Fortunately Ballarat members Tony Pickering and Scott Jones were part of the State team and "looked after" the young lad!

03.01.2022 The final of the Ballarat Taikai

03.01.2022 Paul Bserani flew his drone over our group during jigeiko last Sunday at the Ballarat Goldfields Kendo Taikai. It provides a different perspective of ma-aai!

02.01.2022 An interesting history and worth a thought. I imagine working on mats would have implications for Kendo not to mention toes.

02.01.2022 What to do today? I have no excuse!

01.01.2022 Not many Ballarat people would have met Oda Sensei. He accompanied Haga Sensei to Ballarat on Haga’s final visit. He was a great mentor and friend to Australian Iaido.

01.01.2022 This photo came up on my memory today. Six years ago we performed Iaido at the Ballarat Library in front of city councillors and a delegation from Inagawa cho, Japan. We've been part of our citys' Sister City Association for over 30 years and have hosted Inagawa kendo ka, fought three friendship tournaments over there and here and made some life long friends.

01.01.2022 Look at the score board; first two bouts a draw; third a win to NSW; fourth a win to Victoria which means it’s all up to the last match...enter Ballarat’s Sensei Tarl O’Mara ; 2-0 against Jayson Chaplin. Woo hoo!!!

01.01.2022 And to start off the new year, here's a flash back to Ballarat's first Children's Kendo class in 1994. If you look closely at the front row of boys the grade fi...ve lad on the far right is Tarl O'Mara. Who'd have thought that today he is fifth Dan, has captained and coached the Victorian Kendo Team and has competed successfully in Japan, Europe and the UK. From small acorns.. See more
