14.01.2022 The Victorian Association #Croquet Open Singles Championship in a COVID year at the Victorian Croquet Centre at Cairnlea from 30 December 2020 to 3 January 2021... was quite different this year. The pandemic reduced the field to 15 players and there was a huge workload keeping the venue COVID safe. The tournament began with players allocated to round robin blocks of 7 and 8 players. The top 4 in each block then qualified to play in the best-of-3 games Quarter Finals, Semi’s and Final. Mike Gidding (Ballina) in regional NSW won Block 1 with 5 wins out of 6 games. Callum Hyland (a regular player in this event, originally from Tasmania), Chris Grant (Ringwood) and Lachlan Berryman (Ringwood) also qualified for the knockout with 4 wins. he top seed in the block (me) failed to qualify. In Block 2, Simon Watkins, last year’s winner, (Brighton) won the block with 6 wins from 7 games. David Johnston (Ballarat Alexandra) and Greg Hill (Brunswick) were next with 5 wins. Tricia Devlin (Castlemaine) gained 4th place on 4 wins due to her higher net points over Alan Honey (Canberra), also on 4 wins. In the first round of the knockout, Mike Gidding and Greg Hill qualified for the Semi Finals in two games whilst Simon Watkins beat Lachlan Berryman 2-1 and Chris Grant beat David Johnston 2-1 by a single hoop in the third game. Mike Gidding played particularly well in the Semi to beat Chris Grant 2-0. Greg Hill had a very big battle against Simon Watkins and prevailed in the 3rd game. The final was a very tight affair with Mike Gidding winning the first game by one hoop and Greg Hill winning the second by one hoop, with both games going to time. At this point it was 7:30 pm on the final scheduled day of the tournament and there were not enough daylight hours left to complete the match before dusk (the light towers have been removed from the Victorian Croquet Centre for safety reasons). Both players were gracious enough to come back and play the final game the following morning even though heavy showers were forecast and arrived. Both players had chances in the early part of the game but there were no decisive breaks until Mike went from hoop 5 to peg out his ball and give contact to Greg with 9 minutes left on the clock. At this point Mike was 15 hoops ahead. When the timer went, Greg was in play and he needed to do two peels and peg his ball off to level the scores. A tough ask with only 3 balls on the court. He started well and was able to collect Mike’s ball out of corner 4 to give himself a fighting chance, but he failed to run a longish hoop 4 which ended the match. Mike Gidding won the Final 22-21, 12-13, 16-4. Congratulations Mike. The Y event (for 5th place) consisted of the first-round losers of the knockout. It was won by Callum Hyland beating Tricia Devlin 26TP-3, 26-10 in the final. The Plate was conducted using a Swiss format and was won by Kevin Beard who won all 4 of his games. Kerri-Ann Organ was next with 2 wins out of 3. This year there were many more unfinished games than in previous Vic Opens. This is probably due, in part, to less time being allocated to games in the block rounds (2.25 hrs versus 2.5 hrs previously), to fewer top players entering this year, and to players being less aggressive than usual (preferring to run away to a corner rather than backing themselves to hit a roquet). In general, the conditions were better than most Vic Open’s (with less wind and no really hot days) and so this wouldn’t have made games more difficult to finish. The Centre had been closed for months while Melbourne was in lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. As soon as things opened up, volunteers led by Lester Hughes have done a power of work to mow and prepare the courts and surrounds for events like this. A big thank you to Lester. Many thanks to Chas Quinn for moving the hoops and Stephen Forster for marking the lines prior to the event. Thank you to the Tournament Referee Brian Foley and referees Mike Cohn, Marie Calthorpe, Kate Patrick and Mignon Johnston. An extra mention for Mike for coming back and refereeing the 3rd game of the Final on the morning after the event was due to be finished. Thank you to the players who played in great spirit and followed the COVID protocols as directed. We are also very grateful that the players understood the heavy dependence on volunteers and helped the managers considerably with tasks both on the courts and inside the clubhouse. Very much appreciated. Finally, a big thank you to Alan Honey, Larissa Honey and Kerri-Ann Organ for organising, preparing and cooking a BBQ for the players and officials after play finished early on New Years Eve. It was a great social occasion. We trust that the threat of COVID will be substantially diminished by this time next year and many of our regular Victorian and Interstate players can participate once again. 14.01.2022 The Victorian Open Doubles Association #Croquet tournament was held at the Victorian Croquet Centre at Cairnlea on 28-29 December. The risks associated with the... COVID-19 pandemic reduced the field down to 5 pairs this year. The event was also shortened, in part, due to the sad passing of John Grieve. This is an event that John has managed over the last few years and players were grateful for the opportunity to attend his funeral and wake on the second afternoon of the event. David Johnston (Ballarat Alexandra Croquet Club) and Callum Hyland, former clubmates from the Sandy Bay Croquet Club in Hobart, played very well and won all their games to clinch the Championship. In the end it was, however, quite a close affair. Runner’s up were Tricia Devlin and Chris Grant who lost only one game - to David and Callum by 2 hoops. Congratulations to these players. We had two players playing in their first Victorian Open AC event. Mike Gidding travelled down from Ballina in regional NSW to partner Lachlan Berryman and they finished in third place. Mike has been playing for 4 years and shows quite a bit of promise. The other newcomer was Lester Hughes from Williamstown Croquet Club a top-class golf croquet player, playing in his first ever AC tournament. Unfortunately, Lester’s partner let him down and so Lester is yet to open his account. It was also good to see Kerri-Ann Organ and Alan Honey from Canberra supporting the tournament once again. Thanks to Brian Foley and Mike Cohn for refereeing the tournament. Full results at: https://croquetscores.com/2020/ac/vca-open-doubles Kevin Beard / Brian Reither Managers

10.01.2022 Updated September calendar

10.01.2022 ACA Competition to continue at Cairnlea ACA has committed to proceeding with all event scheduled at the Victorian Croquet Centre. However, taking into account ...that timing of events may change or be cancelled dependent on Covid-19 restrictions. ACA will endeavour to give as much notice as possible if there are any changes are required. See more

09.01.2022 The updated June calendar. We will be going back to both AC and Golf Croquet playing on the same days. Back to club days Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Coronavirus restrictions are in place. No congregating in the clubhouse, social distancing, washing of equipment and use of sanitizer. If unwell dont come down.

08.01.2022 The Victorian 2019 Open Association #Croquet Doubles Championships was keenly contested at Cairnlea on Friday 27 December and Saturday 28. A smaller than usual ...entry (not surprising with a number of players electing not to come to Cairnlea twice in such a short time with the World Championships coming up!) but the contest was close and some excellent croquet was displayed by the players. There were eight pairs and a full round robin was played with the two top teams progressing to a single game final. While Robert Fletcher and Malcolm Fletcher won all their games to progress the battle for their opponents was much closer. It went right to the last round. Although Callum Hyland and David Johnston won their last round match against Alan Honey and Kerri-Ann Organ it was not enough to keep Alan and Kerri-Ann from qualifying for the final ahead of Kevin Beard and Simon Watkins. The three pairs were equal on games with 5 wins apiece. Alan And Kerri-Ann ended with a 6 hoop buffer over Kevin and Simon. The final was won by Robert and Malcolm 26-0. It was great to have Robert and Malcolm playing at Cairnlea again. The standard they set for everyone else is to be greatly admired. Unfortunately Robert and Malcolm will not be able to contest the singles due to their business commitments. We welcomed Rod White (Ballarat Western) back to competitive croquet and hope we get to see him at many more tournaments. My thanks to Chas Quinn for his help in setting the hoops; to Brian Foley, Mike Cohn, Marie Calthorpe, Kate Patrick and Gwen Hamilton for their support in refereeing the event; and to James Hood for preparing the lawns so well. Results on Croquet Scores https://croquetscores.com//victoria-open-doubles-champions We now move onto the Singles which start Sunday and conclude on New Years Day. 08.01.2022 Corona restrictions relaxed in Victoria The Victorian Premier’s announcement today (Sunday 22 November 2020) includes some very welcome changes in the restricti...ons affecting sport. These will be included in revised Return to Croquet guidelines as soon as we see the updated Directions documents from the Chief Health Officer. In the meantime, here is a summary of the main points. But first - many thanks to everyone for their patience over the past nine months! It hasn’t been an easy time. It’s been wonderful to have so many staunch members ensuring that their croquet club has not become a hotspot for infection. The good news, from midnight tonight: No masks outdoors, if you are social distancing (keep a mask in your pocket). Group sizes of 50 for outdoor sport, subject to a ratio of 4 square metres per person. Croquet courts easily meet the density ratio, so we are governed by the 50 player maximum. Clubrooms are open. Masks must be worn. Shared catering arrangements not yet clear. Gatherings of groups of 50 outdoors. We are not clear yet about the number indoors. Density quotient seems now to be 4 square metres per person, but the maximum for a meeting in a community venue is not spelt out yet. Hygiene and sign-in arrangements should be maintained, to avoid cross-infection and support contact tracing if need be. If your club has already completed a COVID-safe plan, we suggest you update it once you have the refreshed Return to Croquet guidelines. Send your updated plan and the refreshed Croquet Victoria guidelines to your LGA for information. More information: contact the Croquet Victoria Secretary on [email protected]

07.01.2022 News from Croquet Victoria Council At its June meeting, the Croquet Victoria Council decided to go ahead with the Victorian title tournaments in the Croquet Vic...toria calendar. The first events will be the GC Mens and Womens Championships on 8/9 August, at the Victorian Croquet Centre. When the light towers at VCC have been removed (essential for safety reasons), VCC is to come out of mothballs, thanks to a proposal incorporating voluntary labour, offered by the Use Cairnlea group of members. The arrangements will apply to the period from 5 August 2020 to 31 March 2021 and are of course subject to change should new COVID restrictions be introduced. Funding for the events also relies significantly on Croquet Australia events being hosted at Cairnlea - we are hoping that movement between the states will be allowed soon so that these events can go ahead. Council noted that it was now awaiting the planning consultants review of options for the future of the Victorian Croquet Centre. The consultant is to look at the planning and development status of the VCC, and will advise on the constraints and opportunities that shape its potential for the future. His report will be available before the end of the year and will provide input for a Special General Meeting of regional delegates. Council also discussed and approved two proposals for the future: a Council Nominations Sub-Committee which will take responsibility for seeking and supporting members who are interested in contributing to the work of Council. The sub-committee takes forward the work of the DHHS Mandatory Quotas Working Group, which winds up at the end of August. a new two year position for a volunteer Club Development Officer, to work with clubs who would like support in making headway with recruitment or facilities. Terms of reference for the Nominations Sub-Committee and a job description for the Club Development Officer are now available on this website. The Croquet Victoria Secretary has called for nominations and appointment are to be made at the Council meeting in August. Anyone interested is encouraged to contact the Secretary ([email protected] or phone 0459 508 728). At the meeting, concerns were also raised in relation to recent communications, including by Directors, which were acknowledged to be in breach of the Council Code of Conduct and Croquet Victorias Electronic Communications policy. It was agreed that it was important to make clear that all Croquet Victoria office-bearers (including appointed officials) are expected to act with integrity, and that communications via Croquet Victoria media are expected not to be misleading, false, or injurious to any member. It was recognised that the Council Code of Conduct stipulates that Directors are expected to contribute to a positive Council behaviour and culture by showing respect for other Council members opinions.
