24.01.2022 Poppies! Vibrant, flamboyant, beautiful!
22.01.2022 The daffodils continue to share their cheerful pops of colour throughout the gardens right now, but did you know that Ballarat and daffodils go 'way back'? Wonderfully revealed by Michael Taffe in his book 'Growing a Garden City', Ballarat has long identified with the gorgeous daffodil. So popular were they in early Ballarat, they had their own solo flower exhibitions, were the focus of much plant breeding competition, with many prize winning cultivars originating from Bal...larat and Western Victorian daffodil breeders. Their popularity made them a valuable fundraiser too! During World War Two, over 10,000 daffodil bulbs were grown in our gardens by the Ballarat Horticultural Society, which were then sold for the Red Cross war effort, and even earlier, daffodils were sold by the ‘Lucas Girls’ as one of the fundraisers for the Arch of Victory that we so love.
