23.01.2022 The Ballarat New Cemetery -1865. The Ballarat New Cemetery is not "New". It was officially gazetted in 1865, 9 years after the "Old" Ballarat cemetery (1856). The death rate during the Gold Rush was so high that the Old Cemetery filled up very quickly. It was decided another, much larger cemetery would be needed moving forward. Courtesy N. Buchanan

19.01.2022 Cemetery fashion - Vaulted graves. Most of these graves date to the late 1800s, but graves with vaults like these are a throwback to pre 1830s Europe. Prior to this time, one of a grieving families greatest concerns was that their loved one would be exhumed by infamous "resurrection men" looking to make coin by supplying anatomists with cadavers. In 1832, the "Anatomy Act" introduced legislation allowing the unclaimed bodies of prisoners and "lunatics" to be donated to science, thus shutting down the resurrection men's trade. These post-1832 vaulted graves, with thick stone to deter resurrection men, are purely decorative.... and very expensive. Courtesy N. Buchanan

19.01.2022 Cemetery Symbolism The Square and Compasses are the symbol of the Freemasons, the world oldest fraternity. Both the Ballarat Old and New Cemeteries are literally littered with this symbol. A testimony to the influence this benevolent society had on the Goldfields. Courtesy N. Buchanan

16.01.2022 As our much loved Ceremony of Remembrance approaches, we are forging ahead with plans to hold this event on Monday the 14th of December. We are currently exploring options to accomodate social distancing measures and run a Covid safe evening for all families wishing to attend. Watch this space!

14.01.2022 Martin Loughlin (1833-1894) Martin Loughlin was Ballarat's ultimate playboy. Arriving on the Goldfields in 1855, he found large quantities of alluvial gold and wisely invested into several local and successful deep lead mines. By the age of 30, he was one of the richest men in the world. He never married and he never had any kids. He resided permanently in luxury in Craig's Royal Hotel, and when he wasn't helping build the town, he was drinking with the lads and travelling th...e world. He died at the very respectable 1800s age of 63. He is buried under the biggest monument on top of the highest hill in the Ballarat New Cemetery with his 2 brothers. Courtesy - N. Buchanan

13.01.2022 CEMETERY DESIGN Lawn Cemeteries. These became particularly fashionable in America in the 1920s, with cemeteries overcrowded from the Great War, and during the great depression. ... Victorian stone slabs are expensive, and a nightmare for the groundskeeper who has to mow between them. The result was a complete reversal of style, much to the frustration of the monumental stonemasons. Courtesy N. Buchanan

09.01.2022 Annmarie and the team from The Gatehouse Ballarat will host this wonderful event in The Ballarat New Cemetery from October 31 until November 3. They will have two ofrendas set up for the community and are encouraging people to bring photos of loved ones who have died or other cherished items to commemorate them. 05.01.2022 FAMOUS PEOPLE IN THE NEW CEMETERY Mullawallah, better known to the Europeans as Frank Wilson, was the last of the Ballarat tribe of Wathaurung, earning himself the title of King Billy. He was a well known figure in town, and was known for demonstrating the boomerang in Sturt St. He died at the Base Hospital in 1896. Courtesy N. Buchanan

02.01.2022 In 2013, The Ballarat New Cemetery opened the Dreamtime memorial area, developed through an open consultation process with local Elders. Dreamtime is a place of belonging for those to be buried within their ancestral homeland of the Wadawurrung country. The burial ground is a significant area that recognises the traditional owners and has an affinity with the beliefs of those aboriginal people that walked the land before any other cultures. From the 8-15 of November, we mark ...NAIDOC week with the theme of Always Was, Always Will Be, recognising First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. We acknowledge the Wadawurrung people and their ancestors who have been custodians of the Ballarat area for thousands of years, and we pay our respects to all Elders past, present and emerging.
