17.01.2022 To continue embedding Aboriginal culture, practices and beliefs into our curriculum, the kindergarten children made Johnny Cakes. The recipe for our cooking was found in Flavours of the Coast, Koori Cookbook. We started by watching a short clip on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wvIzQPZiGE) which demonstrates a traditional way to make and cook Johnny Cakes. We learnt new words through this video, watching intently to how they are traditionally cooked. The childr...en then set to work; working in groups of 2 or 3 with Laura to mix, knead, cook and spread jam onto their Johnny Cake. Once complete, the children sat to eat their Johnny Cakes, discussing how delicious their ‘bush bread’ was. This cooking experience provided the Kindergarten children with the ability to recognise and respect Aboriginal cultures and their unique place in the heritage and future of Victoria. Learning about and valuing the place of Aboriginal people will enhance all Victorian children’s sense of place in our community (VEYLDF, A Framework for All Children in Victoria, pp.4). See more

10.01.2022 Throughout NAIDOC week, the Swan children participated in numerous activities to enhance their knowledge and understanding of Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander cultures, including making playdough, nature art and drawing indigenous symbols in the sand. On Monday we made playdough as a group using the colours of the indigenous flag. (Black for the people, yellow for the sun and red for the land). The children enjoyed working together to make the playdough including adding ...the ingredients and stirring the mixture. The children enjoyed participating in some nature art, using leaves and sticks as paintbrushes. The swans enjoyed listening to different cultural stories, their favourite being Tidalick the Frog. They were full of ideas about how the animals would get the water out of Tidalick; They will use a cup, they will use a shovel and they will get Tidalick to eat something and it will push the water out were some of the solutions they came up with. Links to the outcomes: Outcome 1- Children increasingly cooperate and work collaboratively with others. Outcome 4- Children are curious and enthusiastic participants in their learning. Outcome 5- Children begin to develop an understanding that symbols are a powerful means of communication.

09.01.2022 Due to the recent warmer weather and easing of COVID restrictions; going to the beach has been possible for a few of the Swan’s room children. We have extended on this experience with the other children by creating our own beach and ocean within the room complete with sand, buckets, spades, water and sea creatures. We have been discussing what animals live in the ocean and what things we might find on the sand. Learning outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners ...that express wonder and interest in their environments and are curious participants in their learning. Learning outcome 5: Children respond verbally and non-verbally to what they see, hear and feel and are able to contribute with their own ideas and experiences.

04.01.2022 The children in the Pelicans room are become very excited about the Christmas season. Last week we began to create some decorations in preparation of putting our Christmas tree up and today was the day that the tree went up! The children all watched in anticipation as Zoe put the tree together. Wow it’s as tall as Zoe some of the children said! We all took it in turns to add a decoration to the tree and we will continue to create decorations and add them over the next coupl...e of weeks. It was so exciting to see the lights all twinkling when we turned them on. We also enjoyed a great Christmas book that one of the children bought in called ‘A completely & utterly, absolutely perfect Christmas’ thank you for sharing your favourite Christmas book with us! At group time we discussed what we like about Christmas and we had lots of great comments such as visiting Grandma and Grandpa, eating lots of chocolates, singing Christmas songs, and looking at all the pretty Christmas lights! If you have any Christmas traditions, stories or songs that your family would like to share with us we would love to hear them! 2.1 Children develop a sense of belonging to groups and communities and an understanding of the reciprocal rights and responsibilities necessary for active community participation 1.1 Children feel safe, secure, and supported
