22.01.2022 When Victor experienced a stroke, his lovely wife Joy became his full-time carer. Today, they are continuing to work towards Victor’s goals to reengage in daily activities. We are very honoured to be part of their life journey. Their story is below. Joy and Victor have been married for nearly 50 years. Life changed considerably for the couple in recent years. At just 68, and with no symptoms, Victor sat down to dinner with Joy after work, and without warning, his heart stoppe...d. What followed was a three-month hospital stay and permanent physical and cognitive impairment for Victor. Determined that Victor remain at home, Joy became his full-time carer. Support from their homecare package provider and ILS was invaluable. Joy describes her experience with ILS OT Michael Portelli, as a lifeline. Victor wouldn’t be home today if it weren’t for Michael, Joy says. Michael worked with Joy to assess Victor’s functional needs and provided advice on suitable equipment solutions. Considerations included sourcing equipment to keep Victor safe and comfortable, with Joy's limited strength in mind. Victor's reclining manual wheelchair now makes it easier for trips outside. Together they can sip coffee by the water, Victor in his wheelchair with Joy by his side.

10.01.2022 We know her as Sally, but to one of her clients she is Sally Santa Claus. Sally was drawn to a career in healthcare due to her passion for helping others. She loves her role as an occupational therapist at ILS because finding the right piece of equipment to assist someone in their daily activities and making such a positive impact on their life, there is no feeling that can beat that. The job satisfaction is huge. Sally picked up her new nickname from one of her clients li...ving with a neurological condition that affects her energy levels and leaves her mostly bedbound. One day they trialled a power chair together that enabled her to leave her bedroom and explore her house. She got to go into her living room to see her houseplant and visit her dog, and just engage with her family in a shared space. Every time I see her now, she calls me Sally Santa Claus because I bring her equipment that helps her to live independently. That’s my favourite story, she says.
