22.01.2022 Snake release. This snake was tangled in bird netting (same snake from last post).

21.01.2022 Beautiful tiger snake dead on the road out near Skipton. An unfortunately common occurrence on the rural roads this time of year, particularly where roads intercept drainage lines. Make sure you break for snakes and, if safe to do so, go around them!

20.01.2022 Yes, it is now spring and you will likely start seeing snakes moving around, and you've probably already started seeing media articles about it. But this is hardly something to be baffled by, it happens every year! Snakes don't function well at low temperatures and so (at least in southern Australia) they must remain inactive throughout the cooler months of the year. As the days start to reach consistently high temperatures (i.e., during spring), it becomes worthwhile to lea...ve their retreat site, bask in the sun, look for food and, particularly in males, travel long distances in search of a mate. Snakes literally don't do anything more than this, and bothering people for no reason at all is certainly not on their To-Do list. Don't pay attention to media posts which push a fear mongering agenda. Snakes simply want to eat, sleep, and reproduce without being disturbedsomething I'm sure you all can empathise with! So, if you see a snake on its journey this season doing the same old thing it does every year, don't hit it with a shovel, hit it with a smile.

12.01.2022 This Lowland Copperhead was unearthed from beneath an old tree stump in a paddock north of Ballarat. There are several other observations of Copperheads being found brumating (i.e., the reptile equivalent of hibernating) in the dirt beneath tree stumps over the cooler months. Check your stumps!
