25.01.2022 Some words of wisdom...
24.01.2022 There is simply nothing more powerful than the bedtime storyespecially in this age of continuous screen time. As we go deeper into the discussion, we start to ...see how the bedtime story is the perfect ending to the day. So lets rethink and reclaim this special decompression time for both parent and child. It is not just something we are doing for our kidsthe benefits accrue to us as well. We dont just read to our kids, we read with our kids. Here are five reasons why the bedtime story is the most powerful family ritual:

17.01.2022 OUTDOORS is the healthiest place to be for children and educators. There is no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing (Alfred Wainwright). What d...o you do when parents are concerned about their children playing outside? - It's too cold - Its too wet - They will get sick - Please don't let my child play with water (Thanks Vikki, Melinda and Mai for the examples). You do not catch a cold from being cold. Viruses are spread through droplets in the air when the sick child or educator coughs, sneezes or talks. They also spread by sharing contaminated objects, such as utensils, toys or equipment. When children are inside, they usually are in close contact to other children, the heater is on and the sneeze is airborne for longer. When children are outside, there is usually a breeze and more space for them to move around which prevents viruses from spreading. AND if parents ask you to keep their child inside because they are a bit sick, they should be at home! WHAT DOES THE VIC DEPT of EDUCATION (DeT) RECOMMEND DURING COVID-19? Indoor/outdoor programs. - "Consider operating an indoor/outdoor program for the full day/session. This naturally provides for more space for the children and the setup of more activates for children to engage in. - If you are not able to run an indoor/outdoor program, consider spending more time outdoors. A greater amount of activities outside will encourage children to spread out more broadly (DeT, May 2020). BENEFITS The fabulous and inspirational Dr Sue Elliot has highlighted over the years the huge benefits for children when they are outdoors; better brain development, better bone and muscular development, increased confidence, motivation, concentration, imagination, social, emotional, self-regulation, resilience and language skills and of course less illness. Dr. Elliot supported the Westgarth community in establishing the first registered Bush Kinder. BUSH KINDER Doug Fargher, the founder of Westgarths Bush Kinder 10 years ago started a movement. Bush Kinder operates rain, hail or shine and has only been cancelled once due to an electrical storm. The children experience all the elements of nature with no shelter but always wear appropriate wet weather gear. The children at Westgarth bush kinder know they are learning on Wurundjeri country, and it needs to be looked after, cared for and respected. Aboriginal people are acknowledged for raising and educating children on country since time began. There are now more than 150 Bush Kinders in Victoria. The link to the DeT Bush Kinder guidelines is included in the comments. COMMUNICATING WITH PARENTS/GUARDIANS - Respect and acknowledge all parents concerns however be confident in your pedagogy and curriculum. - Display photos or discuss with parents the value of children playing in the cold, mud or rain. ALWAYS HIGHLIGHT THE LEARNING! - Remind parents to provide wet weather gear including gumboots, coats, hats and plastic pants or - Have a class set of gum boots, coats, pants or puddle suits. - Include the benefits of children playing outdoors in services newsletters or via your communication app. The information below is from the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) and National Quality Standard (NQS). There are articles and research in the comments. WHAT DOES THE NATIONAL QUALITY FRAMEWORK SAY ABOUT OUTDOOR PLAY? - Outdoor learning spaces are a feature of Australian learning environments. They offer a vast array of possibilities not available indoors. Play spaces in natural environments include plants, trees, edible gardens, sand, rocks, mud, water and other elements from nature. These spaces invite open-ended interactions, spontaneity, risk-taking, exploration, discovery and connection with nature (EYLF, p. 15,16). - Indoor and outdoor environments offer significantly different yet complementary experiences and should be given equal focus and attention (3. 2.1). -Outdoor spaces that are dynamic and flexible offer children opportunities to be active, make mess and noise, and be wholly engaged in play (NQS 3.1). - Services should consider access between indoor and outdoor environments to maximise childrens engagement and support the access of every child (3.1). ASSESSORS MAY OBSERVE; - Outdoor spaces that include plants, trees, edible gardens, rocks, mud, water and other elements from nature (3.1.1) - Challenging elements of outdoor (and indoor) environments that allow for experiences that scaffold childrens learning and development and offer opportunities for appropriate risk taking and risky play (3.2.1). -How the planned program incorporates physical activity that meets each childs capabilities and extends their development, including how it balances quiet/passive play times with more energetic outdoor play (2.1.3). -Evidence that information about the importance of physical activity to childrens health and development is communicated to families (2.1.3). -Using outdoor environments not only as places for children to release energy and engage in physical activity but also for exploration, problem solving and creative expression (3.2.2). ASSESSORS MAY SIGHT; -Documented learning programs that pay equal attention to planning outdoor and indoor environments (3.2.1). See Australian articles and research in comments below. 10.01.2022 Ok Ballarat I need your help !! Last night on the news I learnt of a fantastic initiative to supply our Hospital front line workers with COFFEE. It works on a ...pay it forward concept, you the public pay for a coffee & we organise the rest. We deliver & coordinate who, what, where. My thoughts are you would pay for a coffee through the #skip app make a note that this is a pay it forward coffee for the Hospital, I would need approx x20 to start the ball rolling Let's do this Please share this post so we can get the word out as quick as possible See more

07.01.2022 JOHN MARSDENS TIPS FOR PARENTS 1. Give children space. Back off. Let them roam. Let them be bored. Don't over-plan their lives. Cut way back on the after-schoo...l activities programs. 2. Keep away from all those ghastly, soulless, sterile playgrounds. Keep away from shopping malls. Look for real places. Wild places. 3. Be an adult. Say no to your children at least once a day. If the role of Adult in your family is vacant, then one of your children will fill it. And it won't be pretty. 4. Don't take up all the space. If you are dominating, loud, forceful, your children are highly likely to become passive, lacking spirit and personality and/or sullen. 5. Believe about 40 per cent of the dramatic stories your children tell you of the injustices, corruption and satanic practices happening at school. 6. Teach them empathy. For example, after their jubilant victory celebrations when they win a sporting match, remind them that their jubilation was only possible because someone else the losers have been made to feel awful. 7. Help them develop language skills. Don't finish their sentences for them. Don't correct them when they mispronounce a word they'll work it out sooner or later. Ask them open-ended questions, that need a detailed answer, not Yes/No questions. 8. Make sure they have regular jobs/duties at home and that those jobs are done to a consistently high standard. 9. Don't whinge endlessly about the miseries of your adult life. A lot of children now are fearful about growing up because their parents paint such a grim picture of the awfulness ahead. 10. Teach them to be very wary of people who Absolutely Know the Absolute Truth about Absolutely Everything! The colour of truth is always grey. Extreme positions are for the ignorant. Every creature, every person and every situation is complex. The universe is a wonderful mystery.

05.01.2022 Look at the differences between a typical preschool childs hand (left) and a typical 7 year old hand (right). Want to know why a preschool aged child isnt a...ble to write yet? This is why! Their hands are still developing and are not fully formed. So what should they be doing to support this? PLAY!! Playdough, colouring, cutting, gluing, playing outside, digging in dirt, sensory play, dress up play, science experiments, beading, puzzles, throwing balls, etc. . All of these things help their hands develop. When they are physically ready to write, they will! No need to rush them, they will show you when they are ready. via @Raisingherbarefoot

04.01.2022 Ballarat Steiner School - Kindergarten Crabapple Jelly! A fruit tree is a wonderful way for children to come to an understanding of time and the cyclical nature... of the seasons. The tree itself marks the passing of time as its leaves bud then unfurl, the blossoms open and call to the bees, then the fruits form and can be harvested, before the leaves colour and fall once again. The crabapple tree in the centre of the kindergarten yard was a gift many years ago from Anna Placidis mother, Rosie, and Kate Jones mother, Jean and it has grown sturdier and more productive with each passing year. Last year the rosellas made off with all our fruit before they even had a chance to ripen, but the children have seen the blossoms come again, and watched the tiny wild apples form after the bees visited and the petals dropped, and then helped to net the tree before the summer holidays to ensure we wouldn't lose the fruit once again. Their patience has been rewarded with a massive crop, but once the net was removed there was only one day of picking from the tiny kindergarten and prep gang, then a brief effort by the school children, before the birds somehow got wind of things and moved in once more to strip the tree. We have spent a week making the jelly: first washing the apples then boiling them, stalks, skins, pips and all into pulp, and hanging this to drip overnight from a muslin cloth into a bowl. The next day we boiled up the sour rosy juice with an equal quantity of sugar and set it in jars as a gift to all the kindergarten children at home, and for the few children attending big school. We have put aside a very large jar for the prep children to share as they missed out on their jelly last year, then finally took home a little jar each ourselves. As Marian intones with us in eurythmy: We spread it thick, we spread it thin, we spread it on our toast. We thank the tree, we thank the sun, for the jam we love the most.
