17.01.2022 Protecting your eyes from the sun How UV radiation can damage your eyes Ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause both short-term eye problems and permanent eye damage. Short-term problems include excessive blinking, swelling and difficulty looking at strong light. UV exposure can also cause acute photo keratopathy, which is sunburn of the cornea, like snow blindness or welders’ flash burns. Exposure to UV radiation over long periods can cause more serious damage to the eyes.... The Cancer Council of Australia suggest that you wear sunglasses that meet the Australian Standard AS/NZS 1067:2003. Choose sunglasses that are labelled ‘category 2’ or higher on the swing tag. These sunglasses absorb 95% of UV radiation. Some sunglasses are marked with an Eye Protection Factor (EPF). An EPF of 9 or 10 provide excellent protection, blocking almost all UV radiation. Wear a hat: Combining sunglasses and a sun-safe hat can reduce UV radiation from reaching your eyes by up to 98%.

15.01.2022 PROTECTING CHILDREN FROM THE SUN Just a few serious sunburns can increase your child’s risk of skin cancer later in life. Kids don’t have to be at the pool, beach, or on vacation to get too much sun. Their skin needs protection from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays whenever they’re outdoors. SEEK SHADE... COVER UP GET A HAT APPLY SUNSCREEN Take sunscreen with you to reapply during the day, especially after your child swims or exercises. This applies to waterproof and water-resistant products as well. Follow the directions on the package for using a sunscreen product on babies less than 6 months old. All products do not have the same ingredients; if your or your child’s skin reacts badly to one product, try another one or call a doctor. Your baby’s best defence against sunburn is avoiding the sun or staying in the shade. Keep in mind, sunscreen is not meant to allow kids to spend more time in the sun than they would otherwise. Try combining sunscreen with other options to prevent UV damage.

06.01.2022 New data shows that while fewer Aussie adults are deliberately seeking a tan, many continue to have tanned skin as a result of sun exposure, increasing their risk of skin cancer. The latest figures from Cancer Council Australia’s National Sun Protection Survey show that the proportion of adults deliberately attempting to get a tan dropped from 15 per cent in 2003/04 to 11 per cent in 2016/17. However, 66 per cent of adults still said they had tanned skin, with men more common...Continue reading
