25.01.2022 We just wanted to post this gorgeous bundle of cuteness to remind our Breeders about Source Numbers. A Source Number must be included on any microchip registration form for a dog or cat born and microchipped after 1 July 2020. Without your Source Number, we are unable to microchip your puppies and kittens.... What is a source number? A source number: Identifies an individual, breeder, business or organisation. Is generated once an individual enrols on the Pet Exchange Register (PER). Victorians purchasing a new dog or cat should check the validity of the seller on the PER before they purchase their new pet! For more information see link in comments below. #responsiblebreeders #ballaratvet #wendoueevet #lucasvet Bon Louise

21.01.2022 Do you know the breed of this beautiful girl? Introducing Cleo who had a very important procedure performed at the Ballarat Veterinary Practice when she came in for her desexing recently. Unfortunately, large breed and deep chested dogs are at greater risk of developing the life threatening condition known as Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus or GDV.... In the early stages of this condition, the stomach fills with gas, which causes a simple gastric dilatation or "bloat". Sometimes, the condition progresses no further. The gas is passed and the dog recovers uneventfully. However, sometimes the distended, gas-filled stomach twists upon itself, the entrance and exit of the stomach become blocked and the blood flow to the major organs is compromised. This is a GDV. This life-threatening emergency condition requires immediate surgical intervention to correct. Tragically, many patients do not survive despite surgical correction and the associated intensive medical aftercare. When it comes to GDV, prevention is definitely more successful than the treatment. Gastropexy (surgical attachment of stomach to the body wall) is the most effective and successful means of prevention. Simply, it prevents the stomach from being able to twist on itself and thus prevents the severe cardiovascular compromise associated with GDV. In high-risk breeds, we recommend performing a prophylactic gastropexy at the time of desexing. (Just like we did for Cleo!) This procedure can also be performed on mature dogs. If you own a lage breed or deep chested dog, talk to us about gastropexy and keep your dog safe from GDV. #ballaratvet #wendoureevet #lucasvet

18.01.2022 Does your pet need repeat prescriptions for the Christmas holiday period? Our in-house pharmacy enables us to supply all of our patients with the medications they require in a convenient and cost-effective way at the time of their consultation and on an ongoing basis. Some of our patients require specially formulated medications that are tailor-made to suit their specific dose requirements or flavour preference and this can make all the difference when it comes to therapeutic... outcomes. To this end, we work closely with BOVA Australia, a family-owned Australian pharmaceutical company, that specialises in compounding veterinary medications to the highest of standards. Is your pet currently being treated with a specially formulated medication from BOVA? Please be advised that if you need prescriptions filled before Christmas they will need to be ordered from BOVA by December 13. Please call the Clinic on 5331 1533 if you need to place an order. #ballaratvet #wendoureevet #lucasvet

14.01.2022 Unfortunately this week we have seen two cases of snakebite. Long grass, warm weather, curious dogs...everyone is enjoying this beautiful Ballarat Spring; including our infamous reptiles. Depending on the species of snake involved, snake venom is actually made up of a number of different toxins which can destroy red blood cells, interfere with normal blood clotting processes, damage the muscles and cause severe neurological signs. Dogs which have been bitten often present col...lapsed and unable to walk, trembling, salivating excessively, vomiting and with dilated pupils and succumb very quickly. Dogs which receive a sub-lethal dose on snake venom may have much milder symptoms but still require medical intervention. Remarkably, cats are much more tolerant and often only present with clinical signs 12-24 hours after being bitten. Treatment usually consists of intravenous fluids and the administration of antivenom to neutralise the snake venom in the pet's body. Some patients require multiple vials of antivenom. Pain relief, oxygenation and supportive care are all required for these critically ill patients. Sadly, for everyone involved, sometimes we lose these poor dogs. There is simply nothing that can be done to save them. It truly is heartbreaking. In the event that your dog is found with a snake please bring them straight into the Clinic even if you are not sure if they have been bitten, even if they are not showing any signs. There are some simple tests that can be performed to ensure that your pet is safe. Of course, if your dog has been bitten, the sooner they receive veterinary care, the better the chance of successful treatment. It is also important to note that we no longer need to identify the type of snake that your pet has been bitten by. So please do not put yourself at risk by trying to catch or kill the snake and pleases don't bring dead snakes to the clinic. This is a Lowlands Copperhead (Austrelaps superbus) from Ballarat. They are the most commonly encountered snake around town. If you find a snake in your yard contact Ballarat Snake Catcher. #ballaratvet #wendoureevet #lucasvet

13.01.2022 Diagnostic imaging is an important part of veterinary science. Diagnostic ultrasound is an essential tool for the diagnosis of a range of soft tissue-based medical and orthopaedic conditions. This technology has advanced a great deal in the past 5-10 years and is continuing to evolve. So we were very excited this week when we took delivery of our new Esaote MyLabEight Ultrasound system.... This machine gives us the same ultrasound capabilities that you would expect to find at human imaging centres! Drs Mel Hutchison, Lou Johnson and Stewart Greedy spent Monday afternoon in training with Earl from MedicalPlus. Already this upgrade has been put to good use. Little Miss Tess, who has been having some abdominal issues, was our first patient to be examined with our wonderful new technology. Ballarat Veterinary Practice; committed to providing the best care for our patients and their families.

13.01.2022 We are delighted to be able to introduce our clients (and their fur babies) to our two new veterinarians, Dr Julia Thompson and Dr Shirley Yu who have joined our Companion Animal Team. Please help us welcome them both to the BVP Community! #wendoureevet #ballaratvet #lucasvet

07.01.2022 Ballarat, let’s finish 2020 with acts of kindness, generosity and joy! The Ballarat Veterinary Practice is proud to once again support the Reverse Advent Calendar Ballarat! What is a Reverse Advent Calendar?... Unlike a regular Advent Calendar where the focus is on receiving a treat every day the Reverse Advent Calendar takes the focus off receiving and places the focus on giving to others. A Reverse Advent Calendar begins as an empty box. For 20 days in the lead up to Christmas you place one item (non-perishable food and toiletries) into the box. After 20 days your filled Reverse Advent Calendar is dropped off to York St Church of Christ where it is distributed by food relief agencies to people in our immediate community who are experiencing food insecurity. You can collect a box from: York St Church of Christ (Tuesday - Friday. 9am - 3pm Ballarat Veterinary Practice - Sturt St, Wendouree Veterinary Clinic Lucas Veterinary Clinic Eureka Veterinary Clinic (Creswick Rd & Mt Clear) Our 20 days will begin on November 29 (although you can begin filling your box whenever you like) and our box return day will be happening on Friday 18th December at York St Church of Christ, 410 York St. *** Please share this post with your family and friends. We have 2000 boxes ready to go and we would love to see every single one filled this year. *** #reversadventcalenda

06.01.2022 Are you heading away for the Christmas Holidays? If your pets are going into a boarding cattery or kennel, make sure you have all their vaccinations and parasite control programs up to date. For those animals with underlying medical conditions, ensure that you have enough medication and prescription diet available to see you through the holiday period.... It is also a good idea to have a plan that can be implemented if your pet needs veterinary care while you are away. If we can help in any way, please don't hesitate to call. #ballaratvet 5331 1533 #wendoureevet 5339 2266 #lucasvet 5303 9000

06.01.2022 Keeping your loved ones safe under anaesthetic. Do you know that every anaesthetic performed at the Ballarat Veterinary Practice, Lucas Veterinary Clinic and the Wendouree Veterinary Clinic is under the direct supervision of a veterinarian and closely monitored by a qualified veterinary nurse? Heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation and temperature, are all measured and recorded at regular intervals to ensure that our patients are kept as safe as possi...ble throughout their procedure. Ballarat Veterinary Practice. Committed to veterinary excellence. #ballaratvet #wendoureevet #lucasvet

06.01.2022 Cats vs Dogs! Do you know that often the first sign that something is wrong with our animals is a change in their daily habits? Eating, Drinking and Toileting behaviours can often give your vet vital clues about your pet’s wellbeing.... When your pet who is normally very food orientated, suddenly refuses to eat, then you know it's time to visit the Clinic. But a fussy eater...now that makes it a little more tricky! What about your pets? Are they good eaters? How do you know when they are not feeling their best? #ballaratvet #wendoureevet #lucasvet

05.01.2022 It is National Bird Week! In honour of all things avian, we are encouraging everyone to get behind The Aussie Backyard Bird Count! How to get involved... The #AussieBirdCount is a great way to connect with the birds in your backyard no matter where your backyard happens to be a suburban backyard, a local park, a patch of forest, down by the beach, or the main street of town. You can count as many times as you like over the week, as long as each count is completed over a 20-minute period. The data collected assists BirdLife Australia in understanding more about the birds that live where people live. 05.01.2022 Newspapers wanted! All of our inpatients enjoy curling up with the paper during their stay in hospital. So if you have some spare newspapers at home, our Wendouree Clinic would be very grateful to receive any that you are able to drop in.... PS How gorgeous is this newspaper dog! What breed do you think she is? #wendoureevet #lucasvet #vethospital #ballaratvet

05.01.2022 Grass Seeds! It may be Autumn, but there is still enough long dry grass around to keep us busy removing grass seeds from noses, toes and dogs ears! Look out for characteristic pimple-like sores in between your dog's toes, or any nodular lumps in the skin of their armpits, groin or torso.... Grass seeds in ears will cause a characteristic head tilt with the affected ear held lower. There may also be pain when you massage your dog's ear. (Please don't put any oil or similar down their ear...the barbed, arrow-like shape of the grass seed means it can't simply float out!). Chronic sneezing and unilateral nasal discharge may indicate a foreign body lurking in your pets nasal passage and a sore on any other parts of the body that refuse to heal is a grass seed until proven otherwise at this time of year! The best thing to do to prevent these pesky grass seeds from causing too much damage is to regularly check your dogs for any of the above signs and keep their hair coat short. If in doubt, we can check it out! #ballaratvet #wendoureevet #lucasvet

05.01.2022 Unfortunately our Howitt Street phone lines are down! If you need to contact the Clinic can you please call either our Sturt Street Practice 5331 1533 or Lucas Clinic on 5303 9000. We are so sorry for the inconvenience, we are working with Telstra to have this fixed ASAP.... #wendoureevet #lucasvet #ballaratvet

03.01.2022 Everyone knows that most of our day is spent cuddling our patients! Meet Morgan! This beautiful 14-month-old Bernese Mountain Dog came in for castration and gastropexy yesterday, but spent most of his time with us stealing our hearts!... Gastropexy is such a wonderful procedure to be able to offer our deep chested and large breed dogs. It greatly reduces the complications of bloat and the risk of Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus (GDV). If you have a large breed or deep chested dog it is definitely worth asking about this procedure next time you are in the clinic! #wendoureevet #lucasvet #ballaratvet #GDV

01.01.2022 At just over 24 hours of age, this little orphan is being given every chance with the love and care from our newest Nursing Team member, Catherine. #ballaratvet #wendoureevet #lucasvet
