25.01.2022 Spring is that time when we say goodbye to the daffodils and hello to a crazy, colourful, blanket of blossoms. So I thought I would give the daffs a classic farewell: I WANDERED LONELY AS A CLOUD by William Wordsworth I wandered lonely as a cloud... That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance. The waves beside them danced; but they Out-did the sparkling waves in glee: A poet could not but be gay, In such a jocund company: I gazedand gazedbut little thought What wealth the show to me had brought: For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils.
21.01.2022 New Roadworks and Traffic Changes in Sturt St. Some people may be aware of the roadworks in Sturt St at the moment - the new bike track is going in and will also be a good walking track, there are lights being installed at a few intersections but there is one thing that has changed quite dramatically. At the intersection of Talbot St and Sturt St you can no longer cross Sturt St from either direction, you must turn left into Sturt St from either side.... You can no longer enter Talbot St North or South from Sturt St but you can only do a U turn from one side of Sturt St to the other side of Sturt St. The biggest change is this: Vehicles no longer enter or cross the intersection to do a right turn, rather you enter the U-turn lane IMMEDIATELY from Sturt St and can only enter onto Sturt St - blink and you'll miss your opportunity and it will mean you have to go another block and wait at lights. This intersection is now completed. In Sturt St, traffic is going to be slowed for sure as the right lane has been narrowed to accommodate the bike path. It will look ok imo once finished and has smartened up Sturt St. The other changes are at Lyons St which will be the same as Talbot St once complete. Windermere St will no longer exist in the Sturt St crossover near the hospital. This has been sealed off and looks like it will become green space. Check the photos for more information.

18.01.2022 The Avenue of Honour (1917 - 1919) and Arch of Victory (1920) were erected as memorials to the people of Ballarat and the surrounding district who enlisted in World War I. The idea for the Ballarat Avenue of Honour in 1917 was attributed to Mrs W.D. (Tilly) Thompson, a director of a local clothing manufacturer, E. Lucas & Co. A total of 3,771 trees were originally planted in the Avenue between June 1917 and August 1919 one for each soldier, sailor and nurse from the distri...Continue reading
17.01.2022 A great little market, with sensible COVID-19 practices.
14.01.2022 From the archives. Here's an interesting take on Lydiard St showing a steam locomotive but the view out to Lydiard St is so good. Look at lovely Victoria House on the corner of Doveton Crescent and Lydiard Sts. and of course our precious railway gates. This is a classic Black and White image that predates colour. You'll also notice that there are two tracks through the centre of the station, these were called No.2 and No.3 Road and all tracks and signals in this zone were op...erated by the Signalman at Ballarat B Box at the Lydiard St crossing. There is now only one track through the centre and much of the original rail yard has vanished. Control of signals and points and crossings is by remote control nowadays. Photo is by A E Smith courtesy SLV and was taken approximately 1967. See more
14.01.2022 Close to the new fountain at Lake Wendouree, is a much older fountain, that some love and some hate. You might not even know it’s a fountain, just a pile of rocks. The so called ‘Rustic crown shaped fountain’ was constructed in 1879 to commemorate the location of Ballarat’s first water supply. (In 1859 an underground gravity fed pipeline was laid from Kirk’s Reservoir to the Lake, to ensure water supply). Signage has been set up a while ago, highlighting the history of the fo...untain. So next time you think, is that a pile of rocks? Just go and take a closer look.

13.01.2022 Fairyland, Lake Wendouree, a short look at arguably the most popular area. "There is also a pavilion containing mechanical musical machines of a high order of merit although of the coin in the slot category and nearby in the maze of which many can speak of hopes deferred and of wanderings from the beaten path in their endeavours to reach the centre of this puzzle ground. Swings, Swing Boats and See Saws, Merry Go Rounds and other mirth provoking devices dear to the youthful h...Continue reading

07.01.2022 The Lawn, Lake Wendouree 1887 Lake Wendouree, the modern name of Yuille's Swamp, very truly indicates by its name the transformation which has come over that scene of one time alternate swamp and mud or dust hollow. By conserving the water and pouring in additions from catchwater drains and overflow from the forest reservoirs, a permanent lake has been created, which has for some years now been the great home of local aquatic sports and pleasure taking. It is the only inland...Continue reading

01.01.2022 Ballarat's Edwardian Bandstands: Ballarat has 2 Edwardian Bandstands, the Titanic Memorial Bandstand and the Queen Alexandra Bandstand, both can be found in Sturt Street. The Titanic Bandstand at the bottom end of Sturt street, has a lovely weather-vane in the shape of the Titanic, worth looking up when you’re nearby. The Titanic Bandstand, was designed by local architect, GW Clegg and manufactured at a local Ballarat foundry.... Also worth noting, members of the Ballarat Memorial Concert Band play every year on the anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, in honour of the Titanic Bandmembers who went down with the ship, playing ‘Nearer My God To Thee’ which was thought to be the last song, the Titanic band played in their final hour, The Queen Alexandra Bandstand can be found between the statues of Harold Edward ‘Pompey’ Elliott and Doctor Albert Coates. This bandstand is a polygonal structure topped by a Moorish dome (I was told possibly a Cornish Onion dome at the top), typical of the bandstand architecture of its time and in the ornate iron lacework, you’ll be able to find musical motifs. For more on the Ballarat Edwardian Bandstands you can checkout: http://www.hulballarat.org.au/cb_pa/songways_bandstands.php
