25.01.2022 Im very proud of this house, its a defining work for me personally and for Ballast Point. The design is inspirational, its nothing short of an architectural masterpiece from Andrew Burges Architects. The proportions are sublime, the spaces are pitch perfect, the material pallet is smooth as silk, Ive seen a lot in my time and this is as good as it gets in the world of architecture. Its a piece of art. As a product its uncompromised, built with passion, Pride with a capit...al P and stoic commitment to the architects vision Masterfully Photographed by Murray Fredericks an absolute legend in the world of photography and a good mate. See Murray Fredericks Architectural Photography. Currently on the market with Matt Hayson of Cobden & Hayson Real Estate

25.01.2022 Imagine if you were a kid and had this awesome loft, accessible via a secret ladder hidden behind the chipboard, as your playroom? One of the features of our latest project in Llewellyn St, Balmain, designed with the help of Andrew Burges Architects and sold by Cobden & Hayson Real Estate. Image credit: Murray Fredericks

24.01.2022 When Mat Wilk embarked on his latest project in Llewellyn St, Balmain, returning the propertys heritage values was crucial. The early 1900s cottage had been given an ugly 1970s makeover, with a brick wall built out the front. It had to go! We had to give it back its street presence, the feel of being in a Balmain St, Mat says. These before and after pics show the difference

23.01.2022 In his first blog post for the Ballast Point website, managing director Mat Wilk reveals the six best podcasts to help improve your business, including Freakonomics Freakonomics, which is co-hosted by economist Stephen J. Dunber (pictured). Read the blog here: https://bit.ly/3j8DtyB

23.01.2022 Imagine waking up in this light-filled space every day. Matt Hayson from Cobden & Hayson Real Estate gives an overview of the master bedroom at our latest project in Balmain.

21.01.2022 The family who bought the house in Balmain thought it was missing one little thing - a wine cellar! No problem. Our guys are now hard at work digging one for them. Who else would like a cellar in their home?

21.01.2022 Thanks to Matt Hayson, Rosemary Chen and Rita Lopresti - Cobden & Hayson for your ongoing advice, hard work and dedication. Just for the record its a free standing home but if newscorp want it to be a Semi then I guess thats ok.

20.01.2022 I realised shortly after reading the post below that when they say "weightless" and "flows" its not literally, in hindsight this is obvious and yet I immediately imagined a floating spinning disc defying gravity - possibly built using 3D printing with helium?!?.....you have to laugh at yourself sometimes and I end up laughing a lot

19.01.2022 This window is Ballast Point founder Mat Wilks barometer for how the building industry is performing in the Balmain area. The window at his house in Rozelle has fallen into disrepair. It used to be an awning window, but now the bottom rail has fallen off and the glass has slipped down to rest on the sill, leaving an a gap at the top. Mats builders have been worried about not having enough work, and with good reason. We are in the midst of a recession. Job security is a prob...lem. We have no significant projects at the moment, but thats OK - we can take on small jobs and maintenance work to keep working and keep paying wages. So when Mat spotted a problem with the window he thought this would be an opportune time to get some of his talented craftspeople to fix it (among a long list of things that also need repairing at his house). He diligently put it on a job list with his office manager, told his construction manager about it and waited. That was four months ago, and hes still waiting. Mat looks at the window every day and figures on the day he sees someone fixing it, it means weve run out of work and were in trouble. Until then, were probably OK.

19.01.2022 On a cold winter evening, theres nothing like sitting around a fire pit with the family toasting marshmallows in a beautifully designed backyard. This was one of our favourite features of our project in North St, Balmain.

19.01.2022 Great article by a great journalist Angela Saurine

19.01.2022 Murray Fredericks is hard at work photographing this masterful mid century home restoration we helped Hungerford and Edmunds Architects complete earlier with this year, but I'm wondering if this car is about to steal the show?

19.01.2022 Using standard, off-the-shelf products such as skylights and sheets of plywood in an interesting way can dramatically transform a space. Case in point - the kitchen and dining area of this modern four-bedroom home we built in Randwick in conjunction with incredible architect Ben Giles.

18.01.2022 Exciting news! Our blog has been named among the top 10 Australian architecture blogs and websites for 2020. Click here to find out more and read our posts:

15.01.2022 We are so excited to share this video showcasing our latest project in Llewellyn St, Balmain, which was recently sold by Cobden & Hayson Real Estate. With the help of Andrew Burges Architects, we transformed a rundown early 1900s cottage into a contemporary, light-filled four-bedroom home with refined bespoke interiors, a loft retreat and landscaped gardens.

15.01.2022 How a-DOORable is the entranceway at our latest Balmain project? With the aim of giving the rundown early 1900s cottage in Llewellyn St back its street presence, we salvaged a door from the era, complete with a stained glass window above. Its just one of the many special touches at this beautiful home we developed in partnership with Andrew Burges Architects and Cobden & Hayson Real Estate.

14.01.2022 Coffee in bed everyday of the week with this bedroom. What a beautiful way to open up a space with these stunning, almost, ceiling to floor windows and the greenery giving the feel of bringing the outside in. The latest Ballast Point Balmain project.

14.01.2022 Look what turned up in the local project

14.01.2022 We are so excited to reveal our latest project, which entailed retrofitting a 1960s modernist house in Pymble. As someone who appreciates architecture, it’s always disappointing to see a fine period house demolished or gutted and modernised beyond recognition. That’s one of the reasons we enjoyed working with these clients so much. Read about how we helped sensitively restore and retrofit everything around existing features, such as rosewood joinery and the 1960s mosaic tiles in the bathrooms, in our latest blog: https://www.ballastpoint.com.au/retrofitting-a-modernist-1/

09.01.2022 Ballast Point is thrilled to have a new in-house architect join the team. Peter Maxwell has a Masters of Architecture from the University of Sydney and has worked on some amazing projects, including the redevelopment of the old Griffiths Tea building in Surry Hills, which won the 2018 NSW Architecture Award for Residential Architecture Multiple Housing. Another project, which involved revamping an old cottage made of rare kauri pine near Mittagong, will soon feature on an episode of Restoration Australia. Welcome aboard Peter!

05.01.2022 When redeveloping properties on small blocks, such as this house in Paddington, you have to take every opportunity you can to make it feel larger.
