22.01.2022 2020 Newsletter of the BCG Hope you enjoy reading it....

21.01.2022 It’s with great sadness that we share that last night our shed/club-house was burnt down. Although hard to understand, it appears to have been a deliberate act. When the fire crew arrived a group of youths were seen running away from the site and the side door (which was locked) was wide open. They appear to have gotten in my removing the side panels. The committee will now be sorting out how to clean up and replace the mess with a new shed. Improved security will clearly be a focus.

21.01.2022 Gardening Reopening We are pleased to announce that due to the changing (and thankfully improving) situation with Covid-19, and in further consultation with the Council, the Committee has decided that the garden may now reopen to members. In order to manage Covid risks and adhere to the Government directions, the following precautions are to be taken:... - Members are asked to please not attend the garden if you have any flu-like symptoms. - Do not gather in groups of more than 2 persons and avoid attending the garden if there are more than 10 members already present. - Working bees will remain cancelled until the lifting of the Covid restrictions. - The toilet will remain closed until the lifting of the restrictions. - Members are encouraged to bring your own tools. However, disinfecting wipes (detergent based and disposable) will be provided to wipe down all tools before and after use and any surfaces touched. These are in white bucket in the tool shed. - Regularly touched surfaces (such as taps) will be wiped down daily. - Hand washing (with detergent) is available via an outside tap. - The two benches will be cordoned off. Apologies that some of these restrictions may be inconvenient. however, our ability to keep the garden open relies on all of us adhering to the above precautions, so we appreciate everyone's cooperation. Happy Gardening!!

18.01.2022 Some photos of our recent produce. We had a bumper crop of pumkins and sweet potato this season. Our ameranth plants went feral and had to be cut back continuously.

09.01.2022 Covid-19 Update - Garden closed until further notice Unfortunately, in light of the latest advice from Government regarding Covid-19 restrictions and in consultation with the Council, the Community Garden is now closed until the restrictions are lifted. We have explored options for keeping the garden open with additional personal safety measures, however the blanket nature of the Government’s restrictions do not allow us this flexibility. The members of the garden committee ...will, for the time being at least, continue to access the garden to undertake necessary maintenance activities such as caring for the chooks, lawn maintenance, watering fruit trees and plots sufficient to keep everything alive (hopefully). We will also attempt to mulch as many of the fallow beds as possible to keep weed growth to a minimum. Committee members will be attending to these activities on a roster to ensure no more than two people (from the same household) are at the garden at any one time, in accordance with the Covid-19 restrictions. Our president Megan has offered to be at the garden on Tuesday and Friday mornings between 9am and 11am and can bring produce out to garden members, if it’s available from either the community plots or private plots. At the moment there are eggs, lettuce, spinach, pumpkin and citrus. However if you do come down, please continue to follow the social distancing measures and stay outside the gate. If there is already someone there when you arrive, please stay in your car and Megan will come out. We will review this measure going forward and can’t say how long it may last. The changing nature of the restrictions make it all very challenging. The garden committee appreciates how hard the impact of this decision must be for many of our members, particularly as the garden has (to some degree) seemed to be the last bastion of normality in an otherwise disorienting world. However, unfortunately like much of what is happening in the wider world, these decisions really are out of our hands. We are though continuing to monitor what is happening and the Government’s directives and we continue to liaise with the Council on the matter. Should any of these things change, we will be sure to take any opportunities that present themselves to reopen the garden to members. All the best and stay safe.

05.01.2022 Dear Community Gardeners, Just a quick note to update you all on changes we need to make to activities at the garden in light of the Covid-19 pandemic. - The garden will remain open (for the time being at least). ... If you are feeling unwell with any cold or flu symptoms please stay home. - Please maintain a social distance at least 1.5m in accordance with the Government’s direction. - Morning teas during working bees will not be held until further notice, however members are welcome to bring their own cup and thermos from home. - We are unable to obtain any hand sanitiser (due to supply shortages) however hand washing is available in the toilet and members are encouraged to wash your hands frequently and if you can bring and use hand sanitiser after touching any tools or other items that have been used by other members. - Due to the potential for some of those infectious with the virus to not show any signs of illness, please act in a way that would best protect other members from catching the virus should you yourself have it. That way, hopefully, everyone will stay safe. We will be reviewing the situation as things progress and will update you should things need to change further. If anyone has any concerns or ideas on other ways the garden should be responding, please let us know. Stay safe, Ballina Community Gardens Committee

04.01.2022 So many photo ops, especialy first thing in the morning.

03.01.2022 What a fabulous time of year. The garden is powering along. The crows are not happy as we have netted our strawberry bed. They can see the ripe fruit but can't get to them anymore.
