21.01.2022 Eddie is a third year apprentice fitter and turner at Balmain Ferries, and he wants to let you know about a really concerning proposal being looked at by the go...vernment. "The government would like to abolish apprenticeships as we know them. This is something that we can't stand for. They want to abolish our on-the-job training and just have us go to TAFE. "Pretty much everything I've learned has been on the job and it's been clarified at TAFE. "We signed up for a four-year apprenticeship. We go one day a week to TAFE. "It's an absolute joke to get rid of our on-the-job training." If you're an AMWU apprentice, there's a meeting next Monday the 16th and I encourage you all to come along and bring a friend, bring any apprentices you know, it's really important we fight this." You can sign up to attend our online apprentice mass meetings on MONDAY the 16th of November at 5pm Eastern Daylight Savings time https://www.amwu.org.au/save_apprenticeships OR 8pm Eastern Daylight Savings Time (5pm WA time) https://www.amwu.org.au/save_apprenticeships_2 Not an AMWU apprentice? Show your support by signing the petition! https://www.megaphone.org.au//keep-apprentices-on-the-tools

20.01.2022 Reminder: It's Go Home on Time Day! Here's our economist @Dan_Nahum explaining why it matters. 3 in 4 of those working from home are working outside of normal ...work hours. Australians work 5:15 hrs of unpaid overtime per week, costing workers $100B each year. #auspol

20.01.2022 Trump's closest international mate, Scotty the Mini Trump of Oz. Scotty has played the Trump rule book in lockstep with his deranged, sociopathic, fascist, authoritarian US buddy. Let's hope 2021 sees the back of this, the most corrupt and morally incapacitated federal government and Scotty who has damaged our great nation.

19.01.2022 No distraction can change the facts. Every decision at every turn of the Robodebt disaster - it all goes back to Scott Morrison.

17.01.2022 As Joel Fitzgibbon transitions to the backbench, my mind is with the thousands of workers who have been damaged by his lack of ambition and honesty. Our econom...y and energy needs are changing fast. We need to face these challenges with workers front and centre. It’s time to get real on climate action and job creation. A gas led recovery won’t fix the unemployment crisis, it won’t bring down electricity costs, it won’t deliver climate action and it definitely won’t win an election.

16.01.2022 Another day, another story...

16.01.2022 Just remember that the LNP said we are all in this together... Some of the LNPs mates are well and truly all in, buried to their eyeballs in the trough.

15.01.2022 A massive win for Insecure Workers - now lets get rid of insecure work for good.

13.01.2022 Due to the current COVID restrictions, it is impossible to put on the much-loved, Building Unions' Picnics this year. However, building workers have worked ha...rd all year, and you have earned the day off and it’s your entitlement to be paid. Given that there is no formal picnic, there won’t be any tickets or proof of attendance required. If any employer withholds pay or deducts your pay for Monday 7th December, contact your Union immediately.

12.01.2022 Insecure work equals sick workers, broken systems and poor outcomes - and rich bosses. Time to end the scourge of insecure work. Great Works!

12.01.2022 I’ve got something really important to show you all. We all know this Government has left women behind in the COVID recession recovery. Their tax cuts entrench ...gender disparity, handing $2.28 to men for every dollar that goes to women. Their major investments in jobs are aimed at industries where the majority of workers are men and they’ve ignored the industries most impacted by COVID which are dominated by women. In the worst recession in a hundred years both need support. They’ve refused to establish free, universal childcare, missing an opportunity to create jobs and boost labour market participation and we can’t ever forget that it was early childhood educators who were the first workers to be kicked off JobKeeper. And their introduction of a lower rate in JobKeeper saw twice as many women as men have their payments cut in half. Australian unions aren’t going to stand by and let this continue. Today, we’ve released a comprehensive response to the 2020 Budget that outlines the specific economic impacts of the pandemic on women and provides a policy plan that would ensure women do not get left behind. As part of the plan, we’re calling on the Federal Government to establish a tripartite oversight body, with representatives from unions, business and Government, to ensure the historic levels of taxpayer funding for economic recovery is delivering for all, for women and men. This is our plan to make sure the recovery from this recession is shared and fair. This is our plan to create a more equal society, address systemic failures and ensure that public money is used for public good, not entrenching inequality. This is our plan to ensure nobody gets left behind. Have a read and tell me what you think.

11.01.2022 BRTLC would like to thank Jill Hennessy MP for the outstanding work on Industrial Manslaughter legislation, Wage Theft and reforms within WorkSafe. Also the great empathy and compassion she has shown to families devastated by workplace deaths. Jill has been and remains a great friend of Ballarat Trades Hall. We understand her need to spend more time with family, because family always comes first, but we are sad to lose such an outstanding Attorney General.

09.01.2022 BRTLC Executive and Delegates are deeply saddened by the passing of Gary Fitzgerald. He was a dear friend of Trades Hall. A man of great principles and character who fought for justice and equality. VALE our Council Watcher, Activist and Comrade.

08.01.2022 Excelling in the trades.

08.01.2022 Lets stop the lying to workers and lets start the hard yards to make sure every worker has a safe, secure and highly paid skilled job to go to in the inevitable shift away from fossil fuels. With the proper planning, funding, commitments and thought we can do it and make sure that not one worker, their family or community is left behind. The alternative is more constant lies and bickering and in the end - the plug gets pulled and entire communities are just left stranded - we don't want this to happen - we must act now.

07.01.2022 We recently consulted over 160 gig economy workers about their working lives and what changes they need from government. Shockingly, 58% of gig workers can be... banned from a platform if they reject certain jobs. 48% have no control over what jobs they’re assigned. 74% cannot set their own pay rates. That's not independent contracting. That's not 'flexibility.' Gig workers are getting scammed out of fair wages, safe workplaces, and all the rights and entitlements of employment. If you're a gig worker, be a part of our community of gig workers fighting back: https://youngworkerscentre.typeform.com/to/T6wSn40f

07.01.2022 Last year was truly inspiring. This year because of the Pandemic the event will be online. Join us online to support our First Nations Sisters and Brothers.

05.01.2022 Important reminder.

04.01.2022 Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance and also the end of Trans Awareness Week. We honour and remember the lives lost to transphobic violence, but also celebr...ate our trans comrades . Transphobia is gendered violence which is a workplace issue. It's up to employers and managers to ensure workplaces are accessible - that means physical facilities like bathrooms - and up to all of us to use appropriate language, respect personal pronouns and call out gendered violence when we encounter it. You can find out more about TDOR here: https://tdor.org.au/about
