25.01.2022 The Premier has announced this morning that Queensland will open the border to Greater Sydney from Tuesday 1st December. If Victoria reaches their 28th day of no community transmission (which is due tomorrow) the Premier has indicated Queensland will also make a decision on opening the border to the state.

24.01.2022 Summer water restrictions are less than one week away! Level One Summer water restrictions will come into force from Monday 5th October 2020. Residents will only be allowed to water from 5am to 9am and from 5pm to 9pm three days a week, with the days determined by their street number.... 23.01.2022 The Queensland Government has announced further changes to the Border Zone, effective from 1am Thursday 1st October 2020. From this date, the Queensland Border Zone will no longer exist, meaning any Queensland resident can travel in the New South Wales Border Zone. 19.01.2022 BULLAMON BRIDGE WORKS PLANNED TO BEGIN ON 6TH OCTOBER The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) will be starting work to dismantle and remove the 'Old Bullamon' bridge on the Noondoo-Thallon Road from Tuesday 6th October 2020. Works will be undertaken on weekdays, during daylight hours (6am to 6pm), and are expected to be completed by Thursday 15th October 2020. These works should have no impact on the flow of traffic on the Noondoo-Thallon Road, however traffic control will be in place around the demolition site for the duration of the works. 19.01.2022 Residents please be advised our local emergency authorities are running a training simulation today at the St George Aerodrome. This is not a real emergency. St George Police are leading this exercise, which includes paramedics, firefighters, the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the Balonne Shire Council Local Disaster Management Group.

18.01.2022 A BIG THANK YOU TO OUR BORDER CHECKPOINT TEAMS After many months of keeping us all safe the Border Checkpoints at Mungindi and Hebel were closed this morning with Queensland’s border now open to all other Australians except those in Adelaide. Mayor Samantha O’Toole visited the checkpoints yesterday to say thanks to four of the more than 200 police who have patrolled the borders day and night since July. Australian Army personnel also worked at the checkpoints. Despite a cold ...winter and some scorching days of late all staff performed their duties with diligence and are to be commended for their efforts, which were well received by our communities. A total of 60,507 vehicles were intercepted at Mungindi and 12,201 at Hebel. See more

18.01.2022 Community partnerships have long been at the heart of Australia Day celebrations in the Balonne Shire, and this year Council is partnering with the Dirranbandi Progress Association! The day will feature a free community breakfast ahead of the formal Australia Day awards ceremony, which is to be followed by family-friendly entertainment and free access to an afternoon session at the Dirranbandi Pool. Mayor Samantha O’Toole said she looks forward to presenting these awards for ...the first time. There are so many ordinary people in our Shire who do extraordinary things, and it will be such a privilege to honour them with an Australia Day award, she said. I would also like to thank the Dirranbandi Progress Association for their partnership in hosting the celebrations. 16.01.2022 Stay safe Balonne: the Bureau of Meteorology has upgraded the Balonne River flood warning to Moderate. Moderate flooding continues in the Upper Balonne (between Surat and Beardmore Dam), and river level rises are expected to continue downstream of Beardmore Dam through this weekend as floodwater from the Maranoa and upper Balonne River catchments arrive. 15.01.2022 Get in the mood for Christmas Mungindi! The Crackin' Christmas Carnival is rolling up to the Mungindi Golf Club on Saturday 12th December. There will be plenty of fun for the kids and grown ups too - plus loads of helpful information about drought support for all community members.... This event is presented by the National Drought and North Queensland Flood Response and Recovery Agency as an Australian Government Drought Initiative.

14.01.2022 COMMUNITY ASKED TO NOT SET FIRE TO RUBBISH The community has been asked to refrain from setting fire to rubbish after the second such fire in less than a month. Earlier this month rubbish at the Dirranbandi landfill site was set alight and yesterday morning a fire was lit in a bin at a roadside rest stop. Such fires have environmental impacts as well as financial impacts to Council in clean up costs. On top of that today's fire was lit during a fire ban period.... Council also wishes to thank the concerned resident who informed Council and the QFES about the fire. Anyone who sees another person lighting fire to rubbish is asked to act in the same manner. 14.01.2022 Thallon is kicking off their Christmas celebrations with a fantastic event for all community members They will be lighting up the Christmas Tree at Thallon Park this Saturday 5th December at 6.30pm, complete with carols from the talented Fijian Choir, a delicious barbecue, and gift-giving for the kids. 12.01.2022 Stay safe Balonne: the Bureau of Meteorology has issued an initial minor flood warning for the Upper Balonne River - that's the area between Surat and Beardmore Dam. Significant rainfall has been recorded across the catchment over the past 24 hours. Over the coming days and into the weekend, minor flooding is expected along the Upper Balonne.... River level rises are predicted to reach the Balonne River downstream of Beardmore Dam over the weekend. More detailed predictions will provided once upstream peaks are recorded. Yesterday's flood watch for Wallam Ck has been cancelled. Please stay off flooded roads during this time. Remember: if it's flooded, forget it.

12.01.2022 The St George Pool is opening soon, and we are celebrating! On Monday 12th October, all kids will receive free entry to the afternoon session (3pm-6pm) when they are accompanied by a paying adult. Council would like to thank all of our community members for their patience while we have worked to find a pool manager and get the doors open for summer.

12.01.2022 COMMUNITY HALLS OPEN TODAY Our community halls in Thallon, Hebel, Bollon and Dirranbandi will be open tomorrow from 9 a.m. today, Monday 30th November, for residents requiring respite from the heat. No pets are allowed. Those attending are encouraged to make every effort to keep their properties cool during their absence. Residents are also encouraged to check on family and the vulnerable in their community.

10.01.2022 Get ready Balonne, it's going to be hot! Our region is being affected by a severe heatwave and can expect top temperatures to keep climbing toward the mid-40s over the coming days. We urge everyone to look out for their neighbours - particularly for older residents and young children, who are at the greatest risk of heat-related illness.... Shire halls in Dirranbandi, Hebel, Bollon and Thallon will be open from 9am today to offer residents respite from the heatwave. The St George Library (14 Henry St) is also offering refuge from the heat and can remain open for additional hours if residents require it to stay cool. 09.01.2022 STORM WARNING: BOLLON, DIRRANBANDI, ST GEORGE The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Bollon, Dirranbandi and St George. The storm is likely to produce damaging winds and large hailstones over the next several hours. ... 08.01.2022 Summer means school swimming carnivals! On Thursday 3rd December and Friday 4th December, the St George pool will be closed during the 10am-12pm session only, while local school students have their swimming carnival. The pool will still open for the usual 5.30am-7.30am and 3pm-6pm sessions.... Council thanks residents for their understanding, and wishes our local swimmers all the best at their carnivals.

08.01.2022 Residents please be advised a Severe Fire Danger rating is in place today, on top of the severe heatwave we are already experiencing. There are currently no fire bans in place, but Council urges everyone to please keep themselves safe, stay hydrated, and remain alert. Community halls in Dirranbandi, Hebel, Thallon and Bollon, and the St George Library (14 Henry St) are open to offer refuge from the heat, should residents require it.

05.01.2022 REMINDER: LOCAL FIRE BAN IN PLACE UNTIL MONDAY A Local Fire Ban is in place in the Balonne Shire until 2359 hrs on Monday 28th September 2020. All Permits to Light Fire previously issued in the local fire ban area are hereby cancelled, subject to the following exemptions. THE FOLLOWING EXEMPTIONS APPLY: 1. Fires lit for the purpose of cooking, that are:... a. within a properly constructed receptacle such as a barbeque, smoker, or gas or wood fired pizza oven, and b. where the fire cannot escape or cause embers to drift, and c. there must be a fire extinguishing device available (e.g. garden hose or fire extinguisher) are permitted provided they are not left unattended. NB. Check with your Local Council By-laws 2. Fires lit for the purpose of disposal of animal carcasses are permitted, subject to the issue of a permit by the local Fire Warden. 3. Fires lit for commercial necessity are permitted subject to the issue of a permit to light fire by the Chief Fire Warden. 4. Fires lit in accordance with the provisions of Section 86A of the Fire and Emergency Services Act 1990, Part 6 Sections 53 Powers of authorised officer in dangerous situations and 55 Powers of authorised fire officer for preventative or Investigative purposes. 03.01.2022 The St George Library will reopen this morning at its new home, 14 Henry Street. The team are offering refuge from the heatwave at the new premises today, and will stay open all day if St George residents need a place to keep cool. The Library will remain on Henry St until the new St George Library Hub is completed. Come and check it out!
