23.01.2022 Students of Gordon's online Drawing class have produced some beautiful artwork throughout Terms 2 and 3. Each week Gordon films a video tutorial and his students share their work with him in a private Facebook group. Following Gordon's class curriculum, their work is nothing short of inspiring. Pictured is work by Mandy Raouzaios, Janet Devitre and Jenny Hoegh.

19.01.2022 A recipe for Lemon and Zucchini Cake from the February Balwyn Community Garden Newsletter. 1 cup caster sugar zest of 2 large lemons 1 cup vegetable oil ... 3 large eggs 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking soda 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 3/4 teaspoon salt 2 cups finely grated zucchini 3 tablespoons unsalted butter; melted 1 cup icing sugar 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice Preheat oven to 180 C. Spray a 23x33 cm baking pan with non-stick cooking spray. In a large bowl, mix together the sugar and lemon zest until the sugar is moistened and the zest is thoroughly incorporated. Add in vegetable oil, eggs, lemon juice, and vanilla extract and mix with a hand mixer on medium speed until all of the ingredients are incorporated. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined. Fold in the zucchini. Spoon mixture into prepared pan. Bake the cake for 35-40 minutes or until a tester inserted into the centre comes out clean. Allow cake to cool completely. In a medium bowl, prepare the glaze by mixing together the melted butter, icing sugar, vanilla and lemon juice. Whisk until smooth and drizzle over cooled cake. Glaze will harden slightly.
19.01.2022 Sending virtual claps and a heartfelt thank you to our tutors Suzette, Carmela, Gordon, Carla, Catriona, Robin, Mitha and Carolyn. They have gone the extra mile and run their online classes from home in Term 3. Suzette’s at-home setup would rival Hollywood (see below) and we have met a few furry family members. It was a big ask for our tutors to teach from home and they did it without hesitation. Thank you! We look forward to continuing teaching online in Term 4.
18.01.2022 Last night we held our Annual General Meeting via Zoom. It was a lovely event where staff, members and the Board of Governance came together to reflect on the year. To conclude the 2020 AGM, we shared this video which highlights some special moments from the year.

13.01.2022 BCC Child Care is going from strength to strength and it is wonderful to see! There’s nothing better than the line to child care in the morning, with lots of happy parents and excited kids. Since restrictions eased, we have welcomed new families to the Centre and it has been lovely to get to know them. Gayle, Shini and Linda have been working hard and making the most of the new facilities. The kids are loving the sandpit, play equipment and outdoor race track. Thanks to all our child care families for sticking by us and returning when we reopened. We missed you and it is great to be back!
13.01.2022 Share the Dignity is experiencing a greater demand than ever before! Balwyn Community Centre is proud to be supporting Share the Dignity for the August Dignity Drive. When we return to the Centre, we are a registered collection point and have a collection bin set up in the foyer to collect period products and sanitary items that will be distributed to homeless women, and women in need throughout Australia. In the past, our members have been thoughtful and generous beyond expe...ctations with their donations. We hope that together, we can rally to give even more to such a wonderful Australian charity. For more information about Share the Dignity, you can visit the website: sharethedignity.org.au. When we return to the Centre, look out for the big pink donation box near reception and please share word of the August Dignity Drive with friends and family.

11.01.2022 UPDATE ON BCC REOPENING At this point in time we are still unsure when we will be able to reopen for in-Centre classes and workshops. Deb, Andrea, and the BCC tutors are keeping a close eye on updates from Neighborhood Houses Victoria and the Victorian State Government as to when it will be safe for us to have people back in the Centre and in what capacity. What we are sure of is that all online classes that are currently running will remain online for Term 4, and we look f...orward to (hopefully) running various workshops in the Centre towards the end of Term. All existing classes that did not run in Term 3 or Term 4 due to restrictions will resume in Term 1 next year, unless restrictions are reinstated. Thanks to our members for sticking by us and showing up to class each week. It’s only up from here and we can’t wait to get back to the Centre!
