25.01.2022 Our feet can definitely change past childhood! There are so many other factors that can change our feet. For example, injury, bad footwear, weight gain, pregnancy, how your bones and soft tissues work together over extended periods of time, and over time can change the size AND shape of your feet. : :... : : #footmyths #footsize #footpathpodiatry #balwynpodiatry #podiatry #podiatrist #balwyn #podsfixfeet #myfeetarekillingme

24.01.2022 LOCK LACING.... Who would have thought that changing the laces could have such a big impact on the fit of your shoe! Well they do. > Heres a great one if your heel is slipping in your shoes or up out of the back of the shoe this is the one for you. ... Take the shoe laces how they regularly are and go up to the top eye hole (that no one ever uses) and on the same side go from outside to inside making 2 loops. Then crossing the laces over, thread them through these loops from top to bottom. Pull these laces down and back towards your heel. Finish off by tying them up how you normally would. : : : : #laces #shoelaces #locklacing #shoes #runners #heelslippage #footpathpodiatry #balwynpodiatry #podiatry #podiatrist #balwyn #podsfixfeet #myfeetarekillingme #thefootpathpodiatrydifference

23.01.2022 No no no no no! But. We do use a type of sticking tape in conjunction with other treatments. Wart treatments need to trigger an immune response. We do that by traumatising the tissue with either an acid paint, liquid nitrogen or by puncturing the skin with a needle. > The myth about duct tape came about because it is believed that starving the wart of oxygen will cause it to die. How do we use tape then? > We use it in conjunction with a wart paint. After applying the paint ...and using a donut pad to protect the area, we apply Opsite (which is like the Contact you cover your books with) over the top of the pad. It keeps the pad in place and creates an occlusive environment. Perhaps it does help to starve the wart of oxygen, but what I think is more likely is that it makes all the wart tissue very soggy and unhealthy so it easily comes away. > Simply putting duct tape over it wont help trigger an immune response from the body to heal the area. Youll just get sweaty feet! : : : : #footmyths #warts #footpathpodiatry #balwynpodiatry #podiatry #podiatrist #balwyn #podsfixfeet #myfeetarekillingme #feet #thefootpathpodiatrydifference

21.01.2022 Corns are a pressure related pathology of the skin, the hard skin tends to come back because there is constant or repetitive pressure on the area not because they have "roots". I assume this myth came about because people confused them with warts. >> We treat corns by using a scalpel to cut around the edge and then remove the corn. This is usually pain free as the skin is dead but once we get near the healthy skin, it is not unusual to feel a prick. >> People often ask if w...e ever get rid of corns and the answer is yes. We need to work out why they have occurred in the first place, and remove that cause. So it might be that a particular pair of shoes has rubbed on the little toes, or that you are putting too much pressure on a small part of the ball of your foot instead of across the whole foot. We then need regular treatment. This is where people fall down, they only seek treatment when the corn starts hurting >> At Footpath Podiatry, we find that if we can treat corns regularly and also apply some padding to remove the pressure from the area, we can get the corns to go away. One of our patients has had a very large corn on the sole of his foot for decades but with a few regular sessions and padding, he now only needs to come a couple of times a year instead of every 6 weeks. The lesson here? Dont put treatment off until there is pain. Think prevention instead : : : : #footpathpodiatry #balwynpodiatry #podiatrist #podiatry #thefootpathpodiatrydifference #corns #balwyn #footmyths #preventativecare #padding #pressure #callous #footpain #loveyourfeet #myfeetarekillingme : : : : #footmyths #corns #footpathpodiatry #balwynpodiatry #podiatry #podiatrist #balwyn #podsfixfeet #myfeetarekillingme

21.01.2022 WIDE FOREFOOT LACING Do you have bunions that press into your runners? This is great if you get pain at the point where your toes bend, have a bunion or just need a bit of extra width around your toes. Unlace the shoes all the way, taking the shoe lace out completely. ... Re-lace your shoes however this time instead of starting at the very first holes skip that one and start at the second set. Then just re-lace then back and tie them off all as normal. : : : : #shoelaces #laces #wideforefoot #tightshoes #runners #sport #footpathpodiatry #balwynpodiatry #podiatry #podiatrist #balwyn #podsfixfeet #myfeetarekillingme #thefootpathpodiatrydifference

21.01.2022 Does your big toe move like this? Or does it not move at all? You need this toe to move around 65 degrees for efficient walking, and amazingly a whole lot of people cant do it! Chronic conditions like arthritis can impact a joints movement, but more often than not, we find the culprit to be occlusive and restrictive shoes, that cause compression in that joint > Theres a pretty simple way to decompress this joint. Check out this video where Eliza explains why you need th...is joint to move and how to start to easily decompress it. https://footpath-podiatry.monday.com//41786948_79565770450 : : : : #footpathpodiatry #balwynpodiatry #podiatrist #podiatry #bigtoejoint #1stmpj #gait #structure #supination #support #stablefoot #podsfixfeet #myfeetarekillingme #loveyourfeet #exericse #mobility #mobilisation

20.01.2022 Laces always coming undone? Want to know how to tie them so it doesnt happen? It comes with a word of warning though....let me tell you a story. > I used to run a lot. Lots of fun runs, half marathons and a couple of marathons. During the Sandy Point half marathon in I think 2015, I was about 3km from the finish, running along Beach Rd at Brighton. Straight, long and flat section. And even though the beach is right there, I was far past looking at the scenery! I was absolute...ly cooked (I did run my fastest half that day). I just wanted to stop, even for 30 seconds. I looked down at my laces, hoping to see one undone so I could legitimately have a break. But the bloody things were as tight as when I had started! At that moment, I curses this lace tying technique!!! And yes, I am serious!!! If you need your laces to come undone at some point so you can take a break, dont use this technique! > This is definitely a visual learning opportunity so head to our story to watch the video! : : : : #guilty #confessions #marathon #halfmarathon #running #footpathpodiatry #balwynpodiatry #podiatry #podiatrist #balwyn #podsfixfeet #myfeetarekillingme #thefootpathpodiatrydifference

14.01.2022 Good morning.... Last year my son Harper died suddenly along side his dad when the car they were travelling in was struck by a falling tree. By just 10 years ...old, Harper had already lived a life full of passion, energy and dedication to the environment. At age 7 he organised for Sea Shepherd Australia to come to his school; at age 8 he joined a local conservation group and became a Platypus Education Group Ambassador, and at age 10 he went on the School Strike 4 Climate March. In his short time with us, Harper helped: Clean up over 2000 items of litter Plant over 1000 trees Build and sell nest boxes for native wildlife Advocate for the successful ban of Opera House Nets in Victoria, which has saved countless platypuses And so much more... You can help to carry on Harpers Legacy by joining Harpers Army, his family, friends, Cockatoo Primary, Sea Shepard Australia and Portugal, Platypus Education Group, https://www.instagram.com/thetrashtraveler and https://www.instagram.com/1piecearmy, as well as so many others around the world in a drive to collect 1 million pieces of environmental litter by what would have been Harpers 12th birthday on September 24th. 13.01.2022 Arent old wives tales funny! I can not tell you how many times I have heard this one! I guess it makes sense, that the nail will try to grow back together and therefore narrow the nail but it actually doesnt work! >> Ingrown toenails tend to occur for one of 2 reasons - poor cutting technique - width / curve of the nail. ... We have written many times about how to properly cut your nails. If you are interested, head to our blog at www.footpathpodiatry.com.au/blog Nail shape is unfortunately more likely to be inherited. Some people just have very wide nails that tend to grow inwards into the skin. >> If this is the case, the best treatment is to have an assessment by a podiatrist who can offer advice on the best long term care. This can include regular appointments to clip and shape the nail or a PNA which is a straight forward procedure done under local anaesthetic to remove the width of the nail permanently. >> Both options work well, it is just a matter of personal preference. If you are currently suffering from a painful nail, make an appointment with one of our team to have a chat about what can be done. : : : : #footpathpodiatry #balwynpodiatry #podsfixfeet #loveyourfeet #myfeetarekillingme #ingrownnail #thefootpathpodiatrydifference #painfulnail #curvednail #surgery #toenails #feet : : : : #footmyth #ingrowntoenails #footpathpodiatry #balwynpodiatry #podiatry #podiatrist #balwyn #podsfixfeet #myfeetarekillingme

08.01.2022 VOLUME LACING FOR A HIGH INSTEP This technique works best If you have a high arch, need some extra volume in your shoe or have discomfort in the middle of your foot. A good place to start is take note of any specific spot that feels too tight with the shoe on.... Unlace the shoe (not all the way) leaving 1 or 2 holes in place. The instead of crossing the laces over follow them up along the sides of the shoe- you can go up 1 or 2 holes, just leave as much room as you need. Once you are happy with the amount of space cross the laces over and keep tying them up as normal. : : : #shoelaces #laces #highinstep #higharch #volumelacing #tightshoes #runners #sport #footpathpodiatry #balwynpodiatry #podiatry #podiatrist #balwyn #podsfixfeet #myfeetarekillingme #thefootpathpodiatrydifference

08.01.2022 Oh this is a goody. Let me ask you this. If shoes cause bunions and mainly it is high heels that get the blame, why do we see bunions in men and teenagers? Im assuming they are not spending their days in high heels!!! There are many different reasons for bunions developing, footwear can be a contributing factor in a person who is predisposed to bunions but on their own, high heels will not cause bunions. 1. Genetics play a big role in bunion development... 2. Hypermobility in the feet can see the bones move more easily into a place of deformity 3. Bunions can be a mechanism used by the body to cheat movement. This is complicated and highly individualised and requires full assessment. 4. Tight footwear can make bunions look worse because the shoes rub on the boney deformity and irritate the area making it look swollen and red. 5. Certain genetic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and downs syndrome can go hand in hand with bunions The key takeaway here is to be assessed. There are many ways to manage bunions and yes, that will include a footwear discussion!! : : : : #footmyths #bunions #footpathpodiatry #balwynpodiatry #podiatry #podiatrist #balwyn #podsfixfeet #myfeetarekillingme #thefootpathpodiatrydifference

07.01.2022 Hydration. We all understand the importance of it but did you know that that dryness of the skin can be a direct result of lack of water drunk during the day? When you think about the fact that we are approximately 80% water, how could dehydration not affect every part of us right? Well, your skin is the same. > If you are suffering from dry skin, even on your feet there are 2 things you need to do.... 1. Tackle the issue from the inside. A good rule of thumb is to drink 30ml of water for every kilogram you weight each day. It is more important that you constantly sip, rather than guzzling it all at once (cos you'll just end up on the loo!) 2. Nourish your skin from the outside with a good quality foot specific cream. We love Diabalm which is 25% urea. It helps to keep the skin soft, forming a protective barrier over the skin. Our patients love it too! 07.01.2022 Shoes generally provide protection and cushioning, allowing your feet to not work as hard as they would going completely barefoot! But, there are some benefits to going barefoot. If you have having pain there is best to check in with your podiatrist or health practitioner to see if going barefoot is appropriate for you. Assuming your feet are painfree, try it out once a day. Try different surfaces. Walking barefoot can: - help actually HELP strengthen the muscles of the foot ...and ankle by challenging them to move in different ways and through their full ranges of motion - increase the proprioception, which is your bodies sense of where it is in space. This is crucial for balance and often what is lost after multiple ankle sprains. - let you connect with nature. There are thousands and thousands of nerve endings in the soles of your feet and by walking around it nature, science is beginning to show that there is a calming influence on the body! 07.01.2022 Do you have any idea of just how important your big toe joint is to your body? Next time you walk, pay attention to what happens in that joint as you push off. Does it bend? Does it not bend? Does it give you some discomfort. > This joint is basically the pivot point for your body during walking. It requires around 65 degrees of flexion (upward bending) for your foot to create a stable environment to push forward from. It is incredibly common for us to see restriction in th...is joint due to arthritis or bunions, but it is equally common to just see restriction due to poor footwear choices. Shoes that are too narrow or to short. > Podiatrist Eliza shows us in this video a super easy, basically no equipment required exercise to help free up some space in this joint. Give it a go.
