25.01.2022 How often do you follow your head (what you think) rather than your intuition (what you feel)? How often do you ignore or override your intuition?
24.01.2022 Karen from Bamboo Spirit has been working with midwife Martina Görner from Ten Moons - Personal Midwifery Care for almost two years now attending births and supporting birthing women and their families through all stages of pregnancy. Here is their first shared experience.
23.01.2022 We've become conditioned to expect fast results.. Our experience is that Western consumers are often content with dramatic short term improvement in their heath yet less focused on the need to address the underlying causes that predisposed them to illness in the first place. This is known as symptom management as is synonymous with how medical services in the West are delivered. Chinese Medicine is very different compared to Western Medicine. It usually takes a little longe...r to dramatically and sustainably enhance health and longevity using Chinese Medicine, especially if you have been unwell for some time. We prefer to avoid this symptomatic treatment approach to health and work with a longer term, prevention-based approach. Chinese herbal medicine is the mainstay of our longer term maintenance treatment programs. We have adapted our service to use a combination of over-the-phone, email or Skype consultation with clinic visitation as needed once your primary symptoms have resolved. Up to a month of Chinese herbal medicine can be supplied on repeat script using this method. To keep treatment affordable we dont charge a consultation fee for this service although a 10% dispensing fee applies to all takeaway herb products. Herbs can either be collected in person from the clinic or sent by Express Post for next business day delivery. From time-to-time clients may need to visit the clinic for a case review.
22.01.2022 *Bamboo Spirit is an ethical practice* Over the years Chinese Medicine has received a lot of bad press in terms of the use of endangered species, cruelty to animals and suspect herb quality. At Bamboo Spirit we assure our clients that we only use ethical products. We do not use endangered plant or animal species or animal products that involve cruelty to harvest. ... We stock a small range of animal products which we are satisfied do not impact on animal welfare to harvest. If we intend to use these animal products in your formula we will always ask for your permission. If you hold any conscientious objection we will use a suitable plant based substitute instead. We use granulated herbs supplied by a long-established, reputable company that doesnt use additives or fillers in the final product. The casings for our herbal capsules are made from vegetable sources rather than gelatine and are suitable for both vegans and vegetarians. We will always do the best we can do to guarantee the highest quality end product available for our clients.
22.01.2022 Have you seen "Unlocking the Mysteries of Chinese Medicine" lying around in the clinic? If you don't already have a copy, make sure you ask for one on your next visit. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~... The book is the culmination of over 15 years of clinical experience and was produced in response to the many frequently asked questions by clients hungry for quality, easy-to-understand information on Chinese Medicine which was otherwise difficult and time consuming to provide within the confines of clinic appointments. We noticed few if any suitably targeted texts in the field and the minefield of inaccurate, misleading and conflicting words of advice and evidence in the public forum. We saw a need in the community and a gap in the market. The reference manual follows the normal stages of the human lifecycle including growth, development and reproduction and the conditions that commonly appear during these life transitions that Chinese Medicine can be helpful in treating. There is also information on family and general health conditions that can occur at any time during the lifecycle regardless of development stage, age or gender. This book is a contemporary, refreshing blend of an old meets new perspective on health and wellness that dispels many common misconceptions about Chinese Medicine and leaves consumers reassured that it is a safe, reliable, tried and tested and effective medicine. It also helps consumers to more fully appreciate how Chinese Medicine was traditionally designed and intended for use and a deeper understanding of how to integrate this ancient medicine into their modern-day health care regime gaining maximum health benefits and not simply accessing and using it as they might Western Medicine treatment.
22.01.2022 It's that time of year again... What are your resolutions? Many of our clients attend clinic in varying states of desperation seeking to restore their health and wellness. They are obviously aware that a health problem exists yet they are usually at a loss in knowing how to remedy the situation. Most have been around the traps seeking advice and support from many healing modalities over the years and with varying levels of short and long term success.... Our experience is that our client group is very intelligent and committed to seeking real assistance. I am always struck by the awareness that if a person knew how to heal themselves they would have done it already. At various times we all need assistance to heal what ails us. It is a sign of health to ask for that assistance.
20.01.2022 How often do you celebrate your successes? We invite you every night this week to quietly spend some time contemplating and listing 5 of your daily wins, both large and small. Notice if you find this exercise difficult or easy. ... Playfully give yourself a gold star achievement sticker for each success.

18.01.2022 ‘Tell me and I'll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I'll understand’ (ancient Chinese saying) Educating the public is a very important aspect of the work that Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners do in Western countries. For me it was so important that I chose my mentor, Tricia Greenway a teacher in a past life and a specialist in consumer advocacy rather than Chinese medicine person to help me bring my vision to the world.... With her help I went on to write and self-publish a book, produced in response to the many frequently asked questions by clients hungry for quality, easy-to-understand information on the topic of Chinese Medicine (which was otherwise difficult and time consuming to provide within the confines of clinic consultation). This information in my book is a contemporary, refreshing blend of an old meets new perspective on health and wellness that dispels many common misconceptions about Chinese Medicine and hopefully leaves consumers reassured that it is a safe, reliable, tried and tested and effective medicine. I provide all new clients to the clinic with a complimentary copy of this book to enhance their therapeutic experience and that you can be involved in your process of healing.
18.01.2022 Chinese Rescue-Remedy? We call them Relaxation Drops. While there are few cure-alls in Chinese Medicine, there are some excellent herbal first-aid remedies that can be taken as a first-line-of-defence to prevent you and your family from getting sick in the first place. At Bamboo Spirit, we stock a small range of over-the-counter Chinese herbal remedies and provide plenty of simple first-line-of-defence home remedies via our website and regular newsletters. All of our produc...ts are backed up with professional over-the-phone practitioner support and advice. If you have any questions about how to use our products safely and effectively simply contact the clinic and we will provide instruction and advice. You can read more by searching the Our Products page on our website, http://www.bamboospirit.com.au/products/
16.01.2022 A nobel prize for the use of Chinese Medicine herb (Qing Hao/Artemisia annua/Sweet Wormwood) has put our medicine in the public eye.
12.01.2022 We saw this Four Corners episode a couple of weeks ago and thought you might like it. I was interested in the concept that Western medicine is "worrying the well" and failing to treat the sick. Check it out.

09.01.2022 Here at Bamboo Spirit, we like to make Chinese Medicine easy... We often hear clients complain that in the past they have had to boil up and drink smelly, foul-tasting raw herbs that were time-consuming to prepare. At Bamboo Spirit we use granulated herbs, a convenient modern-day alternative to boiling raw herbs. Granulated herbal formulas can be fully modified and adapted to meet the specific health care needs of each person and require minimal preparation. Just add boiling ...water and drink, similar to making an instant coffee. One of our many points of difference is our state-of-the-art capsule making facility which allows us to make the granules into capsules which are even more convenient to take, and have the added advantage of having no taste.
08.01.2022 How often do you remember to count your lifes blessings and give grace and gratitude for the gifts that flow your way? 06.01.2022 The fresh start of a New Year presents the opportunity to reflect, take stock and clarify plans for the year ahead. Over the holiday break I spent some time paving my vision for 2017 which interestingly invoked memories of the past. So I begin by posting a submission that I wrote to the Maternity Services Review Board in 2008 (seems like such a long time ago) which commented on 2 questions. 1. What aspects of the Australian context are driving high intervention rates during ...birth? 2. What actions would be required to address the high rates of intervention Answering these questions back then helped to create the foundation of my passion of helping women to achieve conscious, joyful, low- to no-intervention pregnancy and birth. The linked article is a copy of the full submission which was read out to the federal Health Minister (no mean feat for a new graduate to the industry!). https://drive.google.com//0B3EbiXHqiq1dLV9jaERYRkcybzg/view
06.01.2022 With my new practitioner Irenes help, Bamboo Spirit is now Facebook literate. The purpose of our page is to provide a forum to explore and stimulate discussion on contemporary health and wellbeing topics from a Chinese medicine perspective. Our posts will be content rich (we think theyre interesting and hope you will too). Themes will revolve around our passions including translating and educating our clients on how best to use Chinese medicine, exploring safe and effec...tive no- to low-intervention treatment options and integrating our services with standard Western medical care. By sharing our illuminations, thoughts and stories gathered over the course of our working week we hope readers will feel a kindred connection and appreciation as we actively engage in our healing journey and evolve our profession in Australia. We hope that by sharing our insights and experience you benefit from our perspective and build a bigger, more conscious picture of health for yourself. If you like us let us know. If youd like to share your experience of Chinese medicine then post a review on our page. Regards Karen and Irene.
06.01.2022 Ill always be a no- to low-intervention girl; its just how I am. So when I saw this story on Catalyst last week I couldnt help but share it. In my 30 years of practice in the health care industry I have certainly noticed an exponential increase in the number and range of medical diagnostic procedures (e.g. x-ray, ultrasound, MRI, laparoscopy, every increasing range of parameters ordered on blood tests) the quickness to act and the more aggressive medical intervention recom...mended and performed, (e.g. drug therapy, surgical procedures). Sometimes less is more and it seems like Im not the only one noticing.
05.01.2022 How often do you put other people ahead of your own needs? A few years ago following an extremely stressful period in my life I developed excruciating hip pain. While familiar with the usual minor aches and pains of life I was completely unaccustomed to severe chronic pain. This was quite shocking for me. I saw acupuncturists, herbalists, chiropractors, osteopaths and yoga teachers in an attempt to return to my body to balance. ... As I began to heal and emerged from the stress of carrying this injury I was struck by the realisation that during that period I had almost completely ignored my own health to put other peoples needs ahead of my own. I was reacquainted with an old yet familiar pattern. I had stepped away from my health. I made an inner resolve to never put another persons health before my own. Some days I do better staying with my resolve than others. I wonder how many of you share a similar story.
03.01.2022 This is a copy of the Grattan Institute report mentioned in the Catalyst story from 3 weeks ago (See link below) It might be heavy reading for some. The upshot is that the report looked at 5 do-not-do medical procedures (never to be done because they are known to be harmful, ineffective or inappropriate) and 3 do-not-do routinely (only to be performed under specific clinical circumstances).... It discovered that ** 6000 ** do-not-do procedures were performed a year at a cost of $1300-$4400 per procedure to the public purse. It also noted that the problem is much larger than this tiny sample with 1000s of procedures performed across multiple health venues each year. It also noted that the money used to perform these do-not-do procedures might be better spent on reducing waiting lists within the health system. In the realm of womens health (my area) it noted that over 50% of ovarian removal surgery should not have been performed. Im no expert on Western medical practice but it sounds like it would be in womans best health interest to seek a second and third opinion before proceeding with surgeries that have irreversible consequences. The report concludes that (some) patients turn up at some hospitals facing an unacceptable risk of getting the wrong treatment with the intended cure potentially making them sicker. Now thats a WOW moment! It poses the question that perhaps the Health systems focus is on adding new treatments and doing more intervention rather than paying attention to removing antiquated ineffective treatment and doing less intervention. http://grattan.edu.au///2015/08/828-Questionable-Care2.pdf
03.01.2022 Did you know these 5 common symptoms indicate a disharmony with your menstrual cycle? 1. Period pain (sharp stabbing or dull aching) 2. Irregular period (too long or too short): the ideal would be a 28 day cycle with 4-5 days of fresh flow 3. Pre-menstrual migraine, breast distension and disturbances of mood (eg: teary or irritability)... 4. Spotting or clotting of the period 5. Night sweating with the period In the Chinese system of medicine the female menstrual period ought to come on and off uneventfully like the moving waters of a tide. If you have any of these symptoms Chinese medicine may be of assistance to you to help restore your inner balance, alleviate your symptoms and give you a greater sense of wellbeing.
