25.01.2022 Next up, a batch of small brass raised pillar reels

25.01.2022 I'll be at Bendigo Lost Trades March 7/8. If you want to talk about restoring old lathes, reel making, bamboo rods and silk lines, I'm up for a chat.

24.01.2022 A classic style reel pouch I made for my little Hardys, with an antiqued finish

19.01.2022 Just off the bench, a little Perfect

17.01.2022 What planing 4 rods without cleaning up looks like

14.01.2022 For those interested in these things, here's my sequence for making ferrules Female (rod end first, then ferrule end) Chuck bar stock with 10mm extending... Face Centre drill Pilot drill to desired depth Drill to final diameter (don't bother with reaming) Rechuck with about 30mm extending past chuck Turn bamboo side to final diameter, stopping 5mm before the dam (I use a 0.75mm wall thickness) Sand to desired finish Rechuck and part off to final overall length Flip and chuck with 10mm extending Face, centre drill, pilot drill to depth, drill to 0.5mm of final, ream to final inside diameter Rechuck, holding the bamboo end in the chuck with 5mm of this extending past chuck. Hold open end in a live centre and turn OD of ferrule. Blend in the two sections using the compound set to around 5 degrees. Sand to desired finish. Male Chuck bar stock with 30mm extending Turn male part to final diameter plus 0.1mm Rechuck to 50mm extending and turn maximum OD, ie the knuckle part Part off to final length Rechuck with the male end of the ferrule in the chuck - just the knuckle and tip extending Face, centre drill, pilot drill to depth and drill to final inside diameter (No reamer) Turn down OD of the bamboo end to final diameter Sand to final finish

13.01.2022 Back to making a few boos. Those tips never cease to amaze me. Finer than a blade of grass, just half a millimetre across.

10.01.2022 If you're planning to head over to Bendigo for Lost Trades on Mar 7and 8 you can have a chat with me about rattan grips, rod or reel or even silk line making

07.01.2022 If you're interested in making your own steel planing forms for making bamboo rods, I'll be running a tutorial at the Bendigo Lost Trades show this weekend, full sets of notes available for interested folks

07.01.2022 You did good little fella, time for a rest now

05.01.2022 Thought it might be of interest to see my binding setup, which is really as simple as it gets. A single rubber band holds the section and keeps it aligned on the binding guides and from wandering off. A separate spool holder has a simple washer and spring tensioning devices and holds a spool of kimono silk. A scalpel to cut silk and a slip of thin bamboo to pack and straighten wraps. A spool of masking tape to temporarily hold guides and silk. Magnifiers because I'm getting older and to help keep my wraps straight. I usually put on 3 guides before I need to get up and stretch.

04.01.2022 If you're up for a chat about the challenges and rewards of restoring old rod and reel making machinery or how to make ferrule, or reel seats, or bamboo rods, or forms you can catch up with me at Bendigo Lost Trades, 7 and 8 Mar

04.01.2022 Back from engraving, a batch of Perfects
