25.01.2022 We just wrapped up an awesome Japanese Plastering Course at Rancho Mastatal, Costa Rica with Kyle Holzhueter. In the course we learnt the traditional methods fo...r tying bamboo lattice work for wattle and daub, the base coat which goes on top of the bamboo, their brown coats and various types of finishes using clay, lime-clay, and lime. It was fascinating to learn how the Japanese rarely use much sand in their mixes instead they traditionally us lots and lots of fibres including, straw and hemp fibre. The other interesting ingredients was the use of seaweed glue which apart from making the mix stickier is also used as a set retardant in lime plasters. All in all a great 6 days of learning!!!
