15.01.2022 NAIDOC Week | Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital celebrated NAIDOC Week with a smoking ceremony and unveiling of an Aboriginal artwork, painted by an Aboriginal Elder. Daphne Lola Simmons, known as Aunty Lola in the community, created the painting Coming Together which tells the story of a group of Aboriginals and their partners who come from different tribal areas, to meet. Each animal in the painting holds a special meaning for each member, including the green frog, carpet python,... owl, butterfly, kangaroo, lizard, emu, black cockatoo, willy wag, rainbow serpent and galah. COMING TOGETHER My name is Daphne Lola Simmons, known as Aunty Lola in the community. with the help of my Husband John, we created the painting "Coming Together". John drew the outline of all the animals, while I painted the animals. "Coming Together" is about a group of aboriginals and their plus ones, know as the B.K.E.G. who meet weekly on Wednesday at the Community Centre at Condell Park. We all come from different Tribal areas, some have travelled a long journey, while some have had only a short journey. Each animal seen in the painting holds a special meaning for each member and special meaning for Aboriginals. The Green Frog, Carpet Python and the Owl represents the Totems of the Queensland members. While the Butterfly, Kangaroo, Lizard, Emu Black Cockatoo and the Galah are the Totems for the New South Wales members. The Willy Wag is known as a messenger bird for all Aboriginal people. The Rainbow Serpent is a well -known Dream-time Story of the creation of the rivers at flow through Australia. Aunty Lola
