21.01.2022 Our Year 10 Westpac Future Thinkers program had its second session today. The current pandemic was the focus of the design thinking challenges with students collaborating with each other and Westpac mentors to come up with technology based solutions for stressed nurses, cafe owners who are struggling to get customers, isolated eldery people and office workers who have to work from home. The students came up with fantastic ideas that included apps, bicycle delivery services, TV station programming and even VR headsets that are programmed to deliver stress reduction therapy. It was a fantastic, well facilitated collaboration between BGHS, ABCN and Westpac that demonstrated the importance of staying connected through learning.

12.01.2022 This morning, seventeen Year 10 students participated in the first of two Future Thinkers sessions with ABCN in partnership with Westpac. Over the two sessions, students will be partnered up with mentors from Westpac Bank to work through various design thinking challenges via Zoom. Today, the challenge of getting to know mentors in the technology platform was new to the students, but as the session continued everyone relaxed and embraced it. The session included some design thinking challenges including the paperclip challenge and the design a better breakfast challenge that helped the students get to know their mentors better and get their brains thinking in a more creative way. Next week the students will be solving some real world problems, so keep an eye out for updates!!

The students collaborated to research a global issue of their choosing and prepare a film and website campaign based on the issue. Topics included ocean pollution, human rights, human trafficking, big data, child labour, democracy, youth, climate change and animal cruelty. The students produced hard hitting, professional campaigns that demonstrated not only future focussed skills, but also a love of learning. Program coordinator, Miss Martinsons, was extremely proud of the campaigns they produced but was particularly impressed with the mature and independent way the students conducted themselves throughout the program.
