19.01.2022 Today is International Overdose Awareness Day. A time to remember loved ones lost to overdose & reduce stigma. And wed like to shine a light on opioid overdose.... As many as three people a day die from opioid overdose in Australia, and while many people believe heroin is the main cause of opioid overdose, prescription opioids such as oxycontin and fentanyl contribute to around 70% of opioid overdose deaths in Australia. Naloxone is a life-saving medicine that reverses opioid overdose quickly. Free Naloxone is now available to anyone who is at risk of opioid overdose, as well as people who are likely to witness an opioid overdose. 275 lives were saved by Naloxone at WA non-medical community-based sites alone between 1 Dec 2019 and 30 June 2020. Visit mhc.wa.gov.au/naloxone for details of the Take-Home Naloxone Pilot and a list of places where free Naloxone is available without a prescription.

During these unprecedented times, the Mental Health Foundation ...Australia (MHFA) understands that tensions are running high within the Australian community and has noticed a significant increase in use of our services. Mental Health Foundation Australia runs a successful National Mental Health Helpline to provide mental health information, support, referral and professional counselling for people in distress. It is a FREE and CONFIDENTIAL service providing support to individuals, families, friends and carers as well as professionals, students and the general community. Due to its success and growing demand during the current COVID-19 Pandemic, the Mental Health Foundation Australia is pleased to announce the sponsorship of $10,000 received from the Commonwealth Bank Australia to further expanding our service hours, nationwide, to 9.00am - 11.00pm 7 days a week, staffed by appropriately trained professionals. The National Mental Health Helpline provides a broad and anonymous mental health advisory service, especially for those experiencing their first episode or early symptoms of mental illness as a result of newly found stresses due to COVID-19 or other reasons. It is available to those of all ages and stages of mental distress including parents and carers of those suffering from a mental health issue. It will provide a reassuring first point of contact for many and a non-discriminatory referral and counselling service for others. Our professional psychologist and counsellors will continue to provide online service to people in need during the COVID-19 pandemic.
