Even if you’re wearing a face mask, it’s really important to keep your distance from others, unless you live together.

25.01.2022 Ngayi nhangunya (Barkandji hey hello there!) Wishing everyone a great NAIDOC Week 2020. There may not be opportunity to attend many community events this year; though as with a lot of things this year you can use this week to reflect how you understand our Aboriginal cultures and communities across the far west or use the virtual to tap into a number of online programs. Here are a few suggestions you might want to do this week to celebrate NAIDOC:... - Watch a movie by an Aboriginal director - Read a book by an Aboriginal author - Ask an Aboriginal Health Practitioner what their role entails and how they can assist in working with Aboriginal patients and clients - Check out ABC and SBS online they have a number of great programs for NAIDOC Week - Look at a map with the traditional countries of Australia and see the boundaries of the countries in the far west For additional information see the link to the National NAIDOC page: https://www.naidoc.org.au/get-involved/2020-theme

20.01.2022 Amazing support from the Balranald Hospital Auxiliary The Balranald MPS has had over $11,000 worth of new equipment donated to it in the last 12 months thanks to the hard working volunteers of the Balranald Hospital Auxiliary. Items purchased for the Balranald MPS include a new emergency cart, blanket warmer, several wheelchairs, a Palliative Care mattress and other items for the residents to use in the aged care area.... The equipment has made many of the nursing staff tasks easier and the residents have especially enjoyed the speakers to listen to music, etc, in the lounge area. The blanket warmer has been very welcomed in the Emergency Department by the staff and patients alike. Auxiliary President, Mrs Heather Mitchell, said the Auxiliary and its members were very pleased to support the staff and patients at Balranald MPS. The community support we receive for our fundraising activities is fantastic, with donations to our raffles and buying tickets, she said. The Auxiliary has had to curtail most of its fundraising events this year due to COVID-19 restrictions but hopes to still run its biggest fundraiser, the Christmas Stall and Raffle. That’s our biggest for the year, said Mrs Mitchell. A major item the Auxiliary is aiming to acquire for the Balranald MPS is a double gopher. That’s a long time plan to get one for the residents to use for their outings. Someone else has got one and said it’s great and we’d love to be able to do that. Mrs Mitchell said the Auxiliary’s success was due to its dedicated members. They do a lot and I’d personally like to acknowledge them along with all those who support our fundraising. The Balranald MPS would like to thank the Hospital Auxiliary for the purchases and the ongoing support they provide to the MPS. The support of the Balranald Hospital Auxiliary has been invaluable to the day to day running of the MPS and we look forward to the continued support, said Mr Craig Oxford, Acting Health Services Manager. Pictured is Heather Mitchell, President of the Balranald Hospital Auxiliary, with some of the items purchased for the Balranald MPS.

10.01.2022 Be careful during heatwave It's starting to heat up and everyone is urged to be cautious during heatwave conditions that are forecast across the Far West tomorrow and Saturday. You should stay indoors during the heat of the day, minimise your physical activity and keep hydrated during the heatwave.... Take the risk of heat related illnesses seriously - heat wave conditions can cause severe illness, hospital admission and even death. Heat puts a lot of strain on the body and can cause dehydration, heat stress and heat stroke. It can also make underlying health conditions worse. Simple precautions can reduce the risk of heat-related illness. It’s best to try and avoid the heat of the day by staying indoors. If you don’t have air conditioning, using a fan and keeping curtains shut can help to keep you cool. It’s also important to minimise physical activity and to drink plenty of water. It’s also really important to stay in regular contact with elderly neighbours, friends and relatives because they may be more vulnerable to the heat. Signs of heat-related illness include dizziness, tiredness, irritability, thirst, fainting, muscle pains or cramps, headache, changes in skin colour, rapid pulse, shallow breathing, vomiting and confusion. It’s important to get to a cool place quickly if symptoms occur. People showing severe signs of heat-related illness should seek urgent medical attention, in an emergency situation call Triple Zero (000). 01.01.2022 IMPORTANT: Travelling from SA to NSW? Today the NSW Government has introduced important new public health measures that will help keep residents in NSW, and other parts of Australia, healthy and safe, and also assist South Australia to contain their new COVID-19 cases. NSW Health is asking people coming to NSW from South Australia, by whatever mode of transport, to complete a declaration form to check if they have visited any of the venues of concern identified by the South A...ustralian authorities and provide contact details if follow-up is required. This also applies people who have been in South Australia within the past 14 days. The form is available here: https://bit.ly/38XiNHw The list of venues of concern are available here: https://bit.ly/2UCfPja Anyone who has been in South Australia since Friday 6 November should regularly monitor the SA Health alert page for venues of concern and follow the advice of SA Health. They must immediately self-isolate if they have been to any venues where this is advised, and get tested if even the mildest of symptoms appear. Travellers who are not NSW residents who have visited any of these venues will not be permitted to travel to NSW until the 14-day period has elapsed. Non-residents wishing to transit through NSW will be allowed to do so, provided they take the most direct route and can do so in a way that poses no risk to others. The form will be distributed to South Australian travellers arriving at NSW transport hubs such as airports, and in areas such as Broken Hill which is a high-traffic location. Travellers are asked to fill in the form within the 24-hour period before they arrive in NSW, and may be asked to produce their declaration form. The details provided through the form will be important for NSW contact tracing efforts, which have been shown to play a vital role in limiting the spread of COVID-19. NSW Health continues to advise NSW residents to defer non-essential travel to Adelaide, while people from Adelaide should defer non-essential travel to NSW.
