25.01.2022 Header - Young people are continuing to report that there are barriers in education Young people on the Central Coast voiced their ideas at the Empower Youth Summit 2020, they understand the importance of high school and further education. Barang is driving change through relationships with the Department of Education through Local Decision Making. Barang Executive Director, Vickie Parry says Here at Barang we are working with our Aboriginal young people on the Central Coast and are listening to what their needs are from Employment, Education and continual learning, Culture and Identity. 17.01.2022 " The maintenance and experience of culture is an integral human right" There are still widely held views by non-Indigenous people, that demonstrates a lack of understanding for the significance of culture to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Our people have over 60,000 Years or 2500 generations of connection to Country and kin.... We know our Culture and our History makes us who we are as Aboriginal people .. and our young people are right .. its sad that our story isn’t being told in all of its beauty, complexity, depth or at all! We are the world’s oldest civilisation. So why isn’t this taught? How do we tell our story? #youngpeople #barang #centralcoast #culture #heritage #wisdom #regionalalliance #empowerment #ourgenerations #Aboriginal #understanding #education #ourstory #darkinjungcountry

11.01.2022 This week is National Week of Deaf Persons and on the 23 of September every year deaf people world wide celebrate the International day of Sign Languages an event made possible by the United Nations declaration back in 2018. Australia, before colonisation, was a country rich in not only Indigenous spoken languages but also sign languages. Sign languages are an important part of the cultural continuity of many of our First Nations people and our ancestors used them widely fo...r many different purposes. Thankfully due to revitlaition efforts some of these sign languages are being recorded and remembered for future generations. Yolngu Sign Language, of Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory, have recently launched a new dictionary that show Indigenous sign languages are just as old as their spoken language counterparts. Thank you to Rodney and Cindy-Lu for sharing your knowledge with Barang Regional Alliance.
