22.01.2022 Leptospirosis update In the last week, The University of Sydney has identified two cases of Leptospirosis through its hospital. You may remember that last year ...there were eight identified cases of Leptospirosis in a similar geographic location of Sydney, the Inner West. This week we also have identified a case of Leptospirosis in our local area of the lower north shore. This is the first case we have detected in our memory. Leptospirosis, in dogs, initially causes very non-specific signs such as lethargic, elevated body temperature, vomiting, and diarrhea. It often progresses to symptoms consistent with liver and kidney failure. Dogs become infected by being in contact with urine from rats or indirectly via contaminated water or soil. They can also become infected by hunting and eating rats. Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease which means that humans can become infected. Our current recommendation is that if you live within a 5km radius of the Artarmon/Crows Nest area, or frequent those areas, that you vaccinate your dog against Leptospirosis. Initially, it is a course of two vaccines approximately two to four weeks apart. Then there is an annual boosters vaccination. Please speak with our clinical team if you have any queries regarding this disease and your pet. Though we don’t want to be alarmist, we believe it is essential you are fully informed.
