24.01.2022 Get your rear in gear! June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month and this Wednesday, June 17th is Red Apple Day. Australia has one of the highest rates of bowel cancer in the world, with men and women of all ages being affected. The risk of developing bowel cancer is higher in persons who have a family history of bowel cancer, are aged over 50 years, are overweight, eat a low-fibre or poor-quality diet, are smokers, regularly consume alcohol and/or do not engage in regular physic...al activity. Symptoms of bowel cancer may include: Blood in stools or rectal bleeding Recent, persistent changes in bowel habits Changes to stool consistency, form or presence of mucous Abdominal pain or swelling Pain or lumps in the anus or rectum Unexplained anaemia, weight loss, weakness or fatigue You can decrease your risk of bowel cancer by: Eating a diet rich in fibre-containing fruits and vegetables (apples are a great source of dietary fibre!) Limiting alcohol consumption Quitting smoking Maintaining a healthy weight Engaging in regular physical activity Participating in bowel screening appropriate to your level of risk (over 50s should receive a free test in the mail every 2 years) Almost 99% of bowel cancers can be successfully treated if detected early. 20.01.2022 Happy Sunday All, Many thanks to everyone for your patience and understanding while the pharmacy was closed Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. I wholeheartedly understand this was a less than an ideal situation on such short notice. The health and safety of our community is a responsibility we take very seriously. Any staff member with signs of respiratory illness are asked not to come to work and to present for necessary testing. Unfortunately, when the sole pharmacis...t is impacted by illness (I am only human!), this means disruption to our essential services. I am pleased to say that I have been tested and am feeling much better. I anticipate pharmacy services to resume on Monday, opening our doors at 8.45am as usual. My sincere thanks to those in the community that sent messages of wellness and offered your support. May I take this opportunity to remind everyone of the importance of social distancing, personal hygiene and staying at home if you are unwell. Flu vaccines will not be administered at Barcaldine Pharmacy this season but will be coordinated centrally through the Barcaldine Medical Centre (07 4651 1598). Supplies of government vaccines are very limited at this stage and private stock has not yet been released in our area. While we dont have an exact date of when vaccines will be available to the wider comm...unity, we would like to encourage everyone to leave their name and contact details with the Barcaldine Medical Centre. For those who have already left details with the pharmacy, we will assist in passing these on to the medical centre. Not sure if you are eligible for a government-subsidised vaccine? 16.01.2022 November 18th to 24th is World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, which aims to increase global awareness of antimicrobial resistance and encourage best practices amongst health professionals, the general public and policy makers, to reduce the emergence of and spread of drug-resistance infections. Overuse and misuse of antibiotics is increasing the problem of antibiotic resistant microbes (superbugs), which can spread between people. Resistant infections lead to longer hospital s...tays, higher medical costs and increased risk of death. You can play an important role in reducing antimicrobial resistance by: 1. Regularly washing your hands 2. Keeping up to date with vaccinations 3. Understanding that antibiotics don’t work for all infections 4. Asking about other treatments to help with your symptoms 5. Taking antibiotics only when and exactly as prescribed 6. Never saving antibiotics for later and never sharing them with others 7. 12.01.2022 At Barcaldine Pharmacy we are proud to call ourselves RSPCA Guardian Angels. This year the RSPCA needs 32, 819 Guardian Angels to help care for animals in need. Christmas is one of the busiest times of the year for the RSPCA, with thousands of unwanted and neglected animals coming through their doors over the festive season. This year we are offering free (and beautiful!) gift wrapping, but we are calling for a small gold coin donation to the RSPCA Christmas Appeal for every item wrapped. For every dollar donated, Barcaldine Pharmacy will donate a further $2 to this very worthy cause.

10.01.2022 Approximately, two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they are 70. In Australia, skin cancers account for around 80% of all newly diagnosed cancers, most of which are attributable to sun exposure. The Flying Skin Cancer Doctor will be in Barcaldine Monday 22nd & Tuesday 23rd. If you or your loved ones have a niggling spot (or two or three...) or haven't had a check for some time (or ever!), this a great opportunity. Check out their facebook... page or website to book online or for more information. While you're thinking about skin, why not discuss with the specialist, your doctor or pharmacist about the benefits of taking vitamin B3. This is a low cost, low risk and efficacious way of reducing the occurrence of future non-melanoma skin cancers. The largest trial of vitamin B3 treatment showed that a dose of 500mg taken twice daily for one year reduced the rate of new non-melanoma skin cancers by 23 per cent compared to placebo. We have several affordable brands of therapeutic strength vitamin B3 available in the pharmacy without a prescription.

Return any unused or expired medicine to us so we can dispose of it correctly, we don't want it ending up in waterways or the dump ... More than 95% of skin cancers are caused by unprotected exposure to UV radiation from the sun, meaning it is almost an entirely preventable cancer. Many Australians will remember the ‘Sid the Seagull’ campaign from the 1980s which launched the ‘Slip, Slop, Slap’ message. Some things have changed since then but our sun is still the same. Knowing your skin, regularly checking for changes and following the five key measure...s to being sun smart can reduce your risk of developing skin cancer.
