25.01.2022 Barefoot Forwards thoroughbred mare Mikki demonstrating that not every tb needs a rug! Not a shiver in sight. Goes without saying, but the key to success for her has been in the nutritional management.
25.01.2022 This mare is very tight in the hind end (cant bring her legs out behind her for trimming the under side), low in the heel and has some intense quarter bruising from overloading the lateral side. Shes been popped on a 3 week trim cycle for now to grow out a balanced hoof capsule which will hopefully improve the way she feels behind. Her front right also has some bruising and dorsal flare. This is 1 week after the 2nd trim.
25.01.2022 When it comes to rehab for soundness issues, its often a game of mm. Because most times thats all it takes to throw every joint from those inside the foot all the way up to the spine, out of kilter. You have to be meticulous. It starts with the foot. Inflammation, stiffness and compensation is very easy to upset when in recovery. At first glance this foot looks pretty. But for this fella currently on a rehab schedule for hind end imbalance/low grade lameness, theres a lot... going with this foots (and the other 3!) balance that needs work The owner made a very interesting observation a while back. This winter, his rug has been tilting to the left. In itself its a non issue. But when combined with our other observations, its part of the overall puzzle of his current soundness. His rug reflects how hes moving behind. If we can restore balance, hopefully his rug will sit more level, how it used to. See more

22.01.2022 Buzz is coming along well! These clips are a collection from the past fortnight. Please enjoy this video that took way too long to make
21.01.2022 Mystery lameness/long toe low heel/low palmar angle 17hh tb gelding, 10yo 8 weeks between before and after 4 months of pre existing 1/5 lameness on hard ground only - left fore No diagnosis from radiograph... Sound after 3 weeks of weekly trimming This case is from 2018, but we hadnt gotten round to sharing this ones story yet. When his barefoot forward journey began, he had been lame in the left fore for about 4 months. The lameness hadnt been diagnosed, and only showed on hard ground. We took some rads (xrays) which didnt shed light on the cause of his lameness, but both fronts had poor bone density and the pedal bones were too low at the back (low plantar angle). The rads also confirmed our theory that he was thin soled. It was clear there was loads of room for improvement, and we hoped that with restoring balance and function the lameness may improve. The vet, owner and myself didnt know how hed go barefoot, but we decided to try as ground was soft at the time. We wanted to influence as much improvement as possible while the ground was soft, so we opted for weekly balance corrections, daily hand walking in boots and pads and some diet changes. He was sound in boots with pads on hard ground. We pulled shoes in August, and he went sound on hard ground 3 weeks later. The lameness never returned during the 18 months he was on my books. He ended up being comfortable over the summer period barefoot too so he stayed bare. As always, there was still lots more room for improvement and more we could have done, but we worked within certain limitations and the owner and I were pleased with his response to our team effort.
21.01.2022 Wee laddy Charlie gets a bit tense when having his feet done, he purses his lips and tends to flinch when being approached. We discovered that he is able to let go of some tension from his jaw and body overall if we give each leg a stretch before trimming. Sometimes he needs to have all four stretched before we start trimming any feet.
20.01.2022 These two boys were sunning their faces today. Perfectly in sync too. Matchy matchy ears
19.01.2022 Firm Foundations Emilys hubby rigged up this very cool rasp handle on his 3d printer. Feeling very spoilt
18.01.2022 When you only ever feed your horse and it still wont let you catch it..
18.01.2022 Buzz has become much more comfortable with sharing an enclosed space. He comes into this narrow spot the past few days for his snack and handling. Today we started to check how he feels about yielding to pressure on his face. He wore a halter when he first arrived at his previous home two years ago, so we know touch around his face isnt a new concept. My main focus is to remind him that it doesnt need to trigger a stress response. He did really well today! Hes also now comfortable eating while Im close by.
17.01.2022 Dontina Sultan received his first trim in 2016. 4 years later, he begins life as a ridden horse. Sultan is a Haflinger Arabian owned by Dontina Farm, in the Kinglake Ranges.

15.01.2022 One of our special clients Cody demonstrates "putting on your face mask in 3 easy steps".
14.01.2022 April to August. This tb was very fidgety and uptight when rehab for long toe/low heel on all 4 feet began. This hind was most distorted. Now he stands like a rock and lets out some yawns. Long way to go yet and some dry weather would help..but were pleased by his progress as yet.
14.01.2022 Greetings from Gruyere!
13.01.2022 We thought it was time for another update on buzz! Today we had a breakthrough, he stood while I stroked his face. Not just once, but seven strokes! With no flinching! It was a special moment. Heres a video of where were up to, unfortunately my video wouldnt cooperate this morning so I have photos of our special moment at the end of the video, with a reminder of how buzz felt when we began okr journey. Enjoy!
13.01.2022 These guys all released some tension during or after their barefoot forward treatment this week. Special feetback we really appreciate! If your horse is tense or tight through the shoulders, lower back or neck/poll, they may have sore feet. Talk to us about how we may be able to help!
12.01.2022 April against June. 2 week trim intervals on an originally prolapsed thoroughbred foot. Shoes were pulled at the April trim. Still a long way to go for this guy. The very wet winter here has compromised his frog. As a result of limited frog/soft tissue stimulation, heels have collapsed further forward. Hes just started being worked again on a lovely sand arena so we hope that helps. Boots and pads are also on the way in a fortnight.
12.01.2022 Sneaky pup snuck his sniffer into this photo. Bit artsy.
11.01.2022 Just a couple of gorgeous donkeys about to have their barefoot forward trim
11.01.2022 Post trim shenanigans in Olinda.
11.01.2022 Barefoot Forwards own Joey received another physio treatment from the very talented Charlie Sweeney of Flex n Bend. It takes a village to raise a child, and a team to keep a horse sound. Joey has had a few days of intense adventures so he was very much in need of some release work. Based on his antics post treatment we reckon he was most grateful! Joey is a 16yo Welsh cob x gelding who has been with us for 14 years, and barefoot trimmed by us for the same amount of time.
10.01.2022 This sweet little mare tenses up easily, and as a result we werent able to trim her hind feet two weeks prior. Shed constantly move away and if we managed to lift a foot shed leap away before you could start cleaning it out. We decided to try improve her gut health to see what difference if any wed see in her then try again. She went onto a probiotic for 2 weeks and then we gave it another go, focusing on helping her relax. She made a huge improvement! We got both hinds ...properly trimmed. Barefoot Forward specialises in tricky to trim horses. Whether it be behavioral or physical challenges, we can help you find a way to improve your horses ability to have their feet trimmed. No hoof no horse!
09.01.2022 Interesting find in the hay this morning! Danger noodle skin.
07.01.2022 There was little to no movement at Dontina farm, for the word had got around that it was hoof day for some. Hannah had her hoof cleaned and frog trimmed after which she felt ready to rise to her feet for the rest of her trim. I think she misunderstood what I meant by groundwork..
06.01.2022 At the end of a long day, the proud pastry pinching pooch peacefully digests his prized plunder.
05.01.2022 Barefoot Forward is all about bringing about release and relaxation through comfortable feet. This mare couldnt stop yawning after her treatment.
05.01.2022 This 5yr old Connemara gelding started his "Barefoot Forward" journey today!
05.01.2022 3 week trim cycle began in March (left photo). Right was yesterday.
04.01.2022 In the past 4 weeks, were crossing paths with increasing numbers of grass effected horses. Its becoming a major concern, as it can put the horse and those around him in danger. This year due to extreme weather conditions, it seems to be an unexpected issue right now. Normally spring is the time of year we start to see mycotoxins becoming a problem that can turn normally quiet horses into balloons on the end of the leadrope. If youre not yet aware of how mycotoxins can affect your horses behaviour and health, please read this page, and grab some toxin binder. Its a small price to pay to help guard your fur baby against the damage they can do. We provide our clients with heavily discounted mycosorb A. Please inbox if you would like us to be your supplier.
04.01.2022 "I dont know man, what if I never find out whos a good boy?"
04.01.2022 Hope everyone had a lovely time over Christmas!! We were so snowed under before the holidays that it was beginning to look a lot like time for a Christmas holiday well be back on the tools around Jan 6th, currently holidaying in WA! 2019 goes out as the most favourite year for Barefoot Forward so far. We are absolutely over the moon and pumped with what the year has brought forth. Let us share with you a few of the highlights!!!! 2019 was our first year in our new office,... the mighty Isuzu Dmax. Weve had nothing but smooth sailing in the titanic sized truck, so looks like shes here to stay! Some fantastic hoof workshops, the first being in Jan/Feb where we met Firm Foundations Emily Dux who we have worked alongside a fair bit this year and have become very great friends with!! That first workshop was just the beginning of some amazing new insight into how to provide you guys and your horses with better hoof care! We attended some incredible horsemanship clinics, which further fuelled our passion and constantly refines our skills to help you with your horses!! 2019 saw the return to the showjump ring for Joey who is going better than ever at age 16! We enjoyed some humble local competitions immensely! Look out 2020! We are humbled by the opportunity to start under saddle one of the youngsters weve been trimming from the beginning! So far hes taken everything in his stride! Yours truly turned 30, and I couldnt be more excited for the year ahead, bring on 2020!!!!! To all our beautiful clients, we thank you for your loyalty and for being our motivation to keep striving for development and improvement!!!! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!
03.01.2022 Buzz started finding his way into the lead loop today!
03.01.2022 This tb gelding has made a Barefoot Forward recovery from poor caudal foot development-mediolateral imbalance, underrun, contracted heels, small frog and bulbs were the signs. Diet, trim, body work, correct exercise and drier weather have contributed to the improvement in this hind foot. We love to combine different strategies and work alongside you guys to help your horses to the best of our ability. Team work
03.01.2022 Our tiniest customers, youll find them at Myuna Farm when lock down passes! These piccies are from pre mask days!
02.01.2022 This ponys hoof capsules have changed so much in the past year that theyre now unrecognisable. When we first met her one year ago, she had huge amounts of thick, retained sole, her toe grew in a curved shape and her heels curled under. She fluctuated between slightly sore and very sore depending on the weather, trim etc. She now grows a fairly normal shape with tight capsules, a lovely thick sole and runs away when we approach to trim her The secret to this success story is lifestyle changes! This pony has a very dedicated owner.
01.01.2022 Nothing like a satisfying job to kick off the work week! This guy has been on 6+ weeks for a couple years, weve decided to try 3 weeks to improve his chances of long term soundness as his hooves carry a lot of imbalance at the moment. He seemed quite thankful!
01.01.2022 This fella can be fidgety when being asked for hind feet, and move forward/away soon after we start trimming a hind. At the moment, this set up seems to be most productive for everyone involved! If you have a tricky one to trim, please get in touch, theyre our favourites!
