22.01.2022 Despite being a strong dude, Tom finds it difficult to do pull-ups After an assessment, we identified trap and bicep dominance in his vertical pulling, which were taking the power away from the lats - you can see this in an elevated shoulder position... While being able to do a few pull-ups like this, he'd quickly fatigue as the right muscles weren't being activated - this can also lead to overuse injuries What we're doing here, rather than scaling the movement, is swapping ...to a lat pull down, with the intention to get the body into position that allows us to engage the right muscles For the vertical pull, we should do the following to engage the lats: 1 Push the chest forward (this makes it easier to keep the shoulders down) 2 Pull the bar to your chest and into you 3 "Break" the bar and your pull elbows under wrists The overall goal here is to keep his shoulders away from his ears, which should engage his lats... 18.01.2022 Carbs and Fats Both have been on the axis of evil for many nutrition gurus First it was fat, where we were told to avoid it because it will make you fat, clog your arteries and ruin your life ... More recently, it's been carbs as they'll mess with your insulin, leptin, and will ruin your life Neither of these claims are true, though both are interesting when we combine carb and fat dense foods... This is where we find deliciousness and irresistibly Fat and carb heavy foods have a few things in common... They're usually processed, they're usually delicious, and they're usually high in calories and low in nutrients. Put all of this together together and you have an environment for hyperpalatable foods that you just can't say no to. It only takes a quick glance at our modern food system to realise that we're being sold highly addictive foods to drive an endocrine response that will keep you coming back for more @dasrobbwolf outlines this "Dessert Effect" in his book Wired to Eat, where the hyperpalatability of foods will override our brains signal that we're actually satiated - this is when the dessert menu comes out What to do? 14.01.2022 I recently had a consultation with a remote client who's living under quarantine in Spain.... My concern as a coach was how she was going to stay healthy during these times of crises. If you look at supermarket shelves, you'd think that our days of fresh, nutrient dense foods were numbered. What she was quick to tell me was that she had full access to supermarkets, and would able to keep her protocol as normal I think this is critical for those not yet in quarantine to know....... Stockpiling food is not necessary, and you're ruining it for everyone else. The government will not cut off your supply of food - there's no need to be behaving like a pelican On another note, this opens up a different conversation about nutrient and caloric density. While foods that are rich in calories and low in nutrients (junk food) are for some reason a preference in times like these, they're a poor source of vitamins and minerals and put further strain on our health Our collective health should be our first priority right now, and along with regular exercise, purpose and connection, a nutrient dense diet can serve as an anchor in these uncertain times #barefoothealth #buildingbetterhumans #nutrientdense #realfood #healthcoach #nutritioncoach #functionalmedicine

06.01.2022 "Mind over matter, its all in your head, fake it till you make it" There truly is some profound logic behind thinking like this. It helps us cope, succeed, and have faith to push through the boundaries of the mind But what if this went deeper? What if our ability to grow and heal DEPENDED on believing?... In an incredible study in the European Journal of Sports Science, groups were divided into those exercising with external focus where theyre thinking about the OUTCOME (e.g. gotta get these damn pullups done so I can get to this) and with an internal focus where theyd be thinking about the PROCESS of moving the weight, squeezing this, feeling that. Both groups did the same exercises, three times a week for six weeks The results were staggering. Those thinking about the outcome gained 6.9% increase in strength and hypertrophy, and the process focussed group gained 12.4% In my experience, this idea extends to other areas such as weight loss and skill acquisition. Want to get healthier, sounds corny, but you first you really have to believe that you are. What that first muscle up? You have really have to believe and visualise it Most importantly, being PROCESS focussed is critical in any endeavour. 05.01.2022 So when we train, we're effectively breaking ourselves down. We're purposefully stressing our tissues, organs, and nervous system with the hope of growing stronger in the future. We see a crash in anabolic hormones (testosterone, GH) and an increase in catabolic hormones (cortisol, adrenaline). We're effectively PAYING with our health. The return on investment comes after we train... when we eat, we digest, we sleep, we chillout, we recover. It's here that we grow better an...d stronger. Everyone wins. NOW, what happens if we don't go through that recovery process and head back to the gym with limited sleep, bad food and with a bucketload of stress... This is where we start PAYING with our vital health reserves without getting the ROI. Over time we poorer or fatigued, weaker, and more fragile. Many of us see this in a training plateau. Paying with your health isn't wrong, we will need to do it at certain times, and is fine if you've got a clear goal that requires this sacrifice. This being said, most of us we should be training to INVEST in our health... This MAY mean skipping that hero WOD and going for a walk instead. It may mean checking into a yoga class once a week. It may mean a change in mentality that saves that redline for every now and then. The ironic thing is that so often our results (muscle gain, fat loss, performance) are fast tracked when we prioritise a less is more approach! 03.01.2022 We've always been told that the more exercise we do, the more calories we burn, the more this will lead to greater health and body composition This is at the heart of the "move more, eat less" mantra that is preached from doctors, coach's, brands, Government's, and the "fat burning zone" on treadmills This message can be helpful, but the calories only burn so far, and without a consideration of the health and lifestyle of an individual, this line of thinking can be counterint...uitive This is where the constrained model of energy expenditure kicks in which says that the energy expenditure from "moderately active" to "highly active" is insignificant... Ie you only need to move enough to have a healthy level of energy expenditure The study, "Constrained Total Energy Expenditure and Metabolic Adaptation to Physical Activity in Adult Humans also found that activity intensity was inversely related to total energy expenditure - what?! So why would the body plateau in its energy expenditure at a certain level? To find the answer we should follow an evolutionary framework The brain just wants to keep you alive and doesn't do much care for your fitness gains. As such, if you're caught up in excessive mental and physical stress, you won't have the energy to move to stage 3 where we can recover from the work So yes, train hard, but ensure your lifestyle complements your training... a high intensity lifestyle with constant high intensity workouts doesn't work long term Having the space for intensity in your program is created through sleep, nutrition, and lifestyle management. 02.01.2022 I was asked today why I like working with regular folk rather than athletes and 20 something's. The truth is that these folk have a true appreciation for the value of fitness in their lives... Being fit, strong and mobile for life is far more motivating than abs for summer. Being able to keep up with your kids, and being able to live a fuller life is what will keep us in the game. These guys have gone from a low base to being able to deadlift their own bodyweight, climb ropes, and do 30 minute workouts with sustained intensity.
