25.01.2022 Day Care Vs Dog Park A social environment for our Savage Predators requires a certain amount of refereeing and liberty to explore. Our puppers need the freedom to explore social boundaries, establish relationships and develop their play to be able to expand their capacity and fitness for social interaction....Continue reading

25.01.2022 #Photobomb Have you got a favourite photobomb pic of your dog?

25.01.2022 Project Monti #projectmonti Monti had a difficult puppyhood and he represents a huge proportion of Covidian Puppies.... Monti had a heart murmur and the breeder held of potential homes because of it. The treatment took Monti past his critical development period of 16weeks. During that time, Monti lived on a property and was exposed to his immediate family and family life only. Unfortunately this means he missed out on the critical window of development which is crucial to developing a normal dog. Without this exposure Monti - and many like him - develop anxiety. They don’t know exactly what to fear because everything is triggering them. They maintain an anxious state for life. Worst case is that it is socially isolating and the problems only develop stronger versions of themselves until the family unit is intolerable. We changed a few things and brought some power tools into his life. Previously he needed the presence of an infant to remain chilled. We don’t need an infant anymore. Now he is acting like a Golden Retriever should! A happy go-lucky funball! No fluoxetine. Working on his Sociability we have had two occasions where he has been charged at by off lead dogs. Both times ended well and certainly tested his handling and fluency at Heel. I was stoked how it ended on both occasions! We have been able to Six Million Dollar Man Monti now, he is a bigger and better version of himself. We pushed his Sit today, well beyound his comfort zone...see for yourself how he went. Muggins here needs to be aware of not undermining his commands but the rest went swimmingly! We established a new challenge, Monti had issues getting into the car, so we found a table and got him up on it...though it wasn’t expected that he could, we revealed the champion that lies within. I have set a secret project for Mighty Monti and can’t wait to show it to you! Like this post to follow Monti and support his mum and dad as they learn to push not just Monti but also themselves

14.01.2022 Project Lola & Lexi #projectlexilola Update... The more we peel at the onion the more we discover. For example, Lola our wriggly blue Staffy would love to smash a neighbours skateboard. Sure we can punish that, but...what exactly are we able to achieve with that? I grabbed my longboard and headed out and we discovered that Lolas reaction is fear based. For whatever reason she feels like she needs to push the skateboard away. Fortunately this gives us a way of getting better obedience as well as building better resilience. Now we have a girl who is able to push past fear, remain in thought, overcome her reactions and remain on task. Just like when we are practicing for obedience and other skills, play also has some benchmarks...otherwise it gets boring. Getting on the skateboard is built just like any other skill. Start easy, pay for effort, establish minimum benchmarks for pay and graduate up to the end result. Why spend time doing meaningless stuff? Confidence in you two as a team, confidence in ourselves, fun, excitement, accomplishment. Lexi is going great with her Box Feeding and her walking is outstanding. She is quite afraid in general. Which appears to be a genetic disposition she has inherited. But, a dog dragged their walker over to team Lexi with an ensuing Just want to say hi moment. Resulting in tangled leads, scared Lexi...but no quarrel! Send this team some support! They have heaps of work ahead of them and could use us to seek inspiration and motivation for the challenges ahead

13.01.2022 Project Nash - Update #projectnash Our Nash is quite a handsome fellow. And as good as he looks he has some issue that cause a headache or two.... Nash is loud at the door and can be quite scary. He would dig trenches in the backyard. He would pull, bark and showed signs of leash reactivity when walking. Not cool. Through the Sociability Program we have reprogrammed his brain so that we can enrich him at home, teach him to endure (and soon enjoy) isolation, avoid conflict on the walk and to stop German Shepherding the front door. See, Nash would rush and bark at the front door...but when taken outside he would not show signs of aggression, defensiveness or anxiety. This is a learned behaviour, like a secret handshake. But this behaviour leads to dogs being surrendered, rehomed, declared dangerous/menacing and even leads to euthanasia. We spent a great deal of time teaching him to not act out at the door and then we taught appropriate behaviour at the door. After that we looked at his Sociability in public. Compared to last week he has come on in leaps and bounds! He is no longer looking for a pass to Fight Club, now he is looking to smell the roses. Being able to extend his range and enjoy liberty to an extent he hasn’t before was great! Taking a moment for risky play and luring him up on a tree stump...with a barking dog nearby...was his peak performance. Whilst still nervous, he tried to climb up and never - ever - lost focus on the task, despite a strong trigger to his previous reactivity. Nash is getting much stronger with himself now! Support Nash and his family (especially with their newborn son) as they push harder and harder as a team to learn to love the walk and look forward to it again.

13.01.2022 Dogs and Babes It is crucial that kids feel empowered with their family dogs (most ER admissions which are dog related are caused by a family dog). It is also crucial that dogs learn to feel comfortable with their family...for the same reasons.... Early this morning I made breakfast a training session. The goal simple, have Lani as a strong influence with the pups. No way where they ready to listen and comply, let’s not set the benchmark to fail. Instead let’s set the benchmark much lower. Set to fun. I already have safe and effective control of our pups, our pups feel safe and secure with me. At least some of that security needs transferring to our children. This teaches our pups to be aware and mindful of our family as a whole simultaneously teaching our children to be mindful and aware of our pups.

11.01.2022 Project Rocket #projectrocket The finale... Rocket lives up to his name in every sense of the word! He lives life at the speed of light and is easily overwhelmed. Which presents in lots of appeasing behaviours, jumping, licking, wriggling and so on. He also had some horrid sides...such as waking everyone up in the wee hours, obsessing, never stopping and degrading his families quality of life. We took little steps and taught him how things work and how they don’t. Without the use of Fluoxetine (which wouldn’t have worked with such a stressed state) we managed to introduce new speed limits and lo and behold he learned to walk. As soon as he could walk...well we never looked back. We taught him to overcome himself and adapt to how slow the world can be. Plenty of Stay, Place, Liberty, Heel and Recall. The foundation five of the Sociability program. Complemented with some enrichment to give him a heightened sense of purpose within himself. He has come such a very long way! Make sure you send him loads of support Barefooters! #barefootpaws #sociability #sociabilitydog #cavador #kingcharlescavalier #labrador

11.01.2022 My #Coolabah ...she’s not looking too stoked today! Some #steam, some #brush, some #damp and #patience ought to help ought the old #akubra And before you ask how...12 #dogs...plenty of #wind...3 #horses and loads of #distractions...that’s how!

07.01.2022 Desensitization I was horrified to listen to a pair of Veterinary Behaviourists talk about Desensitization and Counter Conditioning recently. Not only where their definitions of the above incorrect, their approach was dangerous!... You cannot rely on a permissive strategy built around copious quantities of food being jackpotted when your student dog is flooded by the trigger. In easy to understand terms...we do not wait for your dog to lunge, bark, snarl and otherwise explode when rehabilitating them! We most certainly do not put our body near the pointy end of a dog when their are being aggressive! On the podcast I will be discussing the process for desensitization (fear the trigger less) and what it should look like. Let me tease you with this: If the process appears dramatic...it’s wrong! If the process is largely uneventful...it’s spot on! Here is an excerpt from a session with a poor gal who is extremely sensitive to noise:

07.01.2022 Project Nash #projectnash What a breakthrough week we’ve had with our Nashie!!! The dots finally connected and we managed to get him over German Shepherding the front door, we found a more civil way to express his savage nature instead.... We achieved Personal Bests for Heeling, Sit - at a distance and in public - and Recall. What a rockstar!!! We discovered his critical distance, which is the range at which he cannot tolerate a trigger anymore. So now we have a specific benchmark with which to work and prove that we have success. Once we all but exhausted Team Nash with all the fun games and scary exposures we went back home. Which happens to be the way I went to school...a looong time ago We went last that house, that one with the bouncing dog who would love to sink his teeth in. Given Nash’ tired state, we where called upon to improve our strategic handling and ensure that Nash is best placed to understand that talking back doesn’t pay and we refined our heel. Team Nash did. amazing! Doubling their Sit -the stay is implied - under difficult conditions, we heeled and split the team up multiple times, we touched up the heel placement and pushed through the glass ceiling. What a champion team they have become!!

07.01.2022 Phew! How stoked am I?! I recently ordered two @ruffwear #flagline harnesses for my #pups. The crazy thing is that Koda is an #alaskanmalamute and Kefi is either an #englishfoxhound or a #harrier (he’s borderline between the confirmations), suffice to say there is a sizable difference between the two bodies. Koda is Kefis Goliath...well kinda... Carolyn at @caninespiritco noted my order straight away and got me to check and recheck my measurements. I was a little unsure because Kodes is at the largest extent for the Medium size and Kefi is at the smallest. Naturally everyone has impeccable taste and the Teal Flaglines where in short supply. Canine Spirit got these sent out and they got here before I expected. Carolyn made the ordering easy, the support earnest and the delivery exceeding. I’m stoked!

07.01.2022 Things are moving at a hectic pace We’re stoked! This room is not finished and will be getting quite the overhaul soon...and that is not where it ends...there’s going to be some huge additions coming soon!... At K9 Country Farmstay & Doggy School we are working to bring some amazing things to you and your dog. Here is a sneaky peek behind the curtain. PS: Don’t tell Jennie I posted this PPS: You can do stuff like this at home with your dog ;)

05.01.2022 Extinction and Resurgence Frankie is back! She’s a pocket load of ! A little Jug full of powerhouse ! Last year somewhere around August we had started to work on a shoulder stall. Perching Frankie up on my shoulder like a .... Just as we nailed the Stall, she wasn’t able to come @k9_countryfarmstay anymore. We had worked the shoulder stall during her biweekly visits. Nice and slow. Fast forward to this week, she triumphantly returned back and within 3 short session 2-5mins each, she was back on my shoulder. The shirt is quite slippery for her so we didn’t stretch the out. But here’s the thing, it was a great project in resurgence. You see, the brain doesn’t unlearn things, but what happens is that the signal pathways get weaker. Like when you jump on a push that you haven’t ridden since a , or the or roller skates you haven’t used for 20+ years. You can still do it, but your very shaky to start with. In no time your back to riding again. Extinction occurs with all behaviour, from frightful to fun filled. This is why a good trainer will always refer you back to the basics. In this you see Frankie who has not done this trick for just over a year. This is the power of resurgence, if you have trained something, it will always come back. Such as any trick or obedience skill. #barefootpaws #k9countryfarmstay #dogtrick #dogtricksofinstagram #amaysimbiglove #jugdogsofinstagram
